IND vs SL: New Era of Indian Cricket under Gautam Gambhir, but repetition of the same old disasters

0

IND vs SL: With the end of India’s triumph at the T20 World Cup, it also ended the remarkable era of ex-India head coach Rahul Dravid. Dravid led India to a WTC final, a World Cup final, and a title triumph in the T20 World Cup final. The veteran has been replaced by longtime franchise-level coaching genius Gautam Gambhir, and India’s tour of Sri Lanka will be the first series played under the ex-KKR mentor.

Not only Indian fans and great cricketers but also several greats of the game from around the world have claimed that under Gambhir, India will be en route to a new journey, and this will be the initiation of a new era in Indian cricket.

However, despite all the praise, Gambhir and the Indian selectors headed by Ajit Agarkar have also faced some criticism, often due to the similar selection errors that they once again made while picking up the squads for the Sri Lanka tour.

Md. Siraj again in T20s—why not Avesh and Mukesh?

Siraj, the bowler who was a part of India’s World Cup-winning squad, has been brought back into the side. But what was the need, say many, as the bowler has impressed many in the longer format of limited-overs cricket, but his T20 numbers are not worth a continuation chance.

India rather had the likes of Mukesh Kumar and Avesh Khan; both of them have been very impressive in domestic games and every time provided with chances in the IPL, and for the national side, these two, especially Mukesh, have been some of the highest wicket-takers the Indian side now produces. The selection of Siraj over Mukesh seemed to be some sort of personal favouritism.

How SKY surpassed Pandya for T20 captaincy

Though there are not many complaints that Suryakumar Yadav has been appointed India’s new T20I skipper, fans are troubled with Hardik being overlooked as a probable T20I skipper for the Men in Blue. The master T20I batter has excelled in the format for India; however, Hardik’s experience and credits as a captain cannot be reached by the MI batter.

SKY, though now given an interim role, seems to have been established in the role of Indian captain due to Pandya’s fitness troubles.

Where is Abhishek Sharma?

Abhishek Sharma, India’s most promising rising talent in T20s, has been dropped to everyone’s surprise. Abhishek impressed everyone in the world, even the likes of the great Matthew Hayden, with his brilliant intent and 6-hit prowess.

Sharma was taken to the Zimbabwe tour, where he smashed a stunning 100 in just his second international experience. Looking so promising, this was supposed to confirm that the SRH batting all-rounder will be seen in India colours on the Sri Lanka tour; however, he is not being picked, and probably the selectors have no reason to clarify their decision.

Gill appointed vice-captain; not needed

Shubman Gill has been appointed as the vice-captain in both T20Is and ODIs. This created a stir as the selectors overlooked several senior players for leadership roles, like Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul, and Rishabh Pant. Though the player is considered a great prospect, Gill has not been that promising in the recent past to ensure his spot in the India team across all formats, and the role of a deputy leader seems unnecessary and hasty a decision in his favour.

Unnecessary Parag Inclusion in ODIs

Riyan Parag, the Royals’ terrific performer, came to the limelight after a stunning domestic season and his unstoppable form in the IPL. He was picked up on the Zimbabwe tour, where he underperformed with just 24 runs batting with a strike rate below 89. However, he has been given a justified extended chance in the Sri Lanka T20s, though he is not likely to feature in the starting XI.

However, his selection in ODIs seemed very unlikely, especially when Sanju Samson, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Rinku Singh were denied a spot in the 15-man squad.

No place for Gaikwad and Samosn. You gotta be kidding me

Samson’s drop from ODIs and Gaikwad’s not being picked in any format are the most controversial decisions made by the new head coach, Gambhir, and the Agarkar-led selection committee.

Gaikwad has been the most promising batter for India, and he was considered the most likely player to replace the veteran Virat Kohli. However, he was not picked for just the next series after a 7, 77, and 49-run performance in the last tour.

Samson, who could have likely featured for India in the absence of Hardik and also could have replaced batters Iyer or Pant if needed, has been dropped despite his century in the last match he played in the ODI format. Indian selectors and Gambhir are yet to face the press, and they will be showered with questions for their unlikely moves, which do not seem to be beneficial for team India.

The preparations have started, and the BCCI is likely to have a meeting with all franchises to discuss the retentions. Next year, there will be a mega auction where a team will get only 4-5 players to retain.

So there will be a lot of chopping and changing, and many big names will come under the hammer. Teams that have not performed well in the last few seasons will look to pick some good players who can do well. We might see some teams looking for new captains. Faf du Plessis joined Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2022 and led the franchise for three seasons. Under his captaincy, RCB made the playoffs twice, in 2022 and 2024. But the franchise is still searching for its maiden title. Du Plessis’ three-year contract is over, and the franchise might not look to retain him as he is already 38 years old. So we might see Du Plessis leaving RCB ahead of the IPL 2025.

2. KL Rahul (Lucknow Super Giants)

Star Indian batter KL Rahul is another name that is coming out in the news who could leave his team ahead of the IPL 2025. Rahul has been with LSG for the last three seasons, but they couldn’t make it to the playoffs in 2024. There was also footage where LSG owner Sanjeev Goenka was seen shouting at him on the ground. All these things have ignited rumours that Rahul might leave LSG. However, Rahul’s contract with the Lucknow franchise is also over, so there is a chance that he might look to end his tie with them.

1. Rishabh Pant (Delhi Capitals)

IPL 2025 Rishabh Pant

A big name that can leave his team is Rishabh Pant. The swashbuckling batter made his IPL debut for Delhi Capitals in 2016 and has been an integral part of the team since then. He has played 111 matches and scored the most runs for the franchise. But according to a report from Dainik Jagran, the DC franchise is not happy with the captain and is thinking of releasing him. So if it happens, there will be a number of franchises that might be looking for Pant in the IPL 2025.

IND vs SL: With Hardik asking for more time off from ODI cricket, his bowling fitness will be under the radar for his Champions Trophy inclusion

IND vs SL: After the major upset in the Cricket World Cup 2023, India is now in the hunt for an ICC title in the game’s longer format as they enter the Champions Trophy to be played in the upcoming year. India is to play six ODI matches, the first three against Sri Lanka and the next against England in January, before they proceed to the Champions Trophy.

India will likely make some changes to their ODI squad under new coach Gautam Gambhir and his chosen coaching staff. Hardik Pandya has been often credited as India’s best all-rounder; he has also shown his prowess in the shortest format of the game. Hardik was one of India’s leading performers in the T20 World Cup, and all thanks to his bowling geniuses, he led India to a historic victory in the World Cup.

Hardik’s fitness has always been a concern, and as a result, he has not been handed the role of T20I skipper for the Men in Blue. Hardik was last seen in the longest limited-overs format in the Cricket World Cup 2023, which he left midway through. Since then, Hardik has not been tested for his bowling prowess in the longer format.

The Agarkar-led selection committee, alongside Gautam Gambhir, has already been making tough calls on the veteran all-rounder, as Hardik also has a record of being snubbed from the India team due to his inefficiency in bowling.

The selectors have made it clear that every player’s performance in the Vijay Hazare Trophy later this year will hold great value in their team India selection for the Champions Trophy. Hardik’s batting does not have the same explosive intent as before, and the format also needs someone who can have a fair quota of their overs completed.

Hardik will be seen for Baroda in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, and if he can convince the selectors and the head coach with his bowling as well as batting prowess, then he might be included in the ODI Champions Trophy, so it is clearly stated that the MI skipper is not a must-pick in the longer format of limited-overs cricket.

3 Franchises ft. CSK that can sign Rishabh Pant for IPL 2025 if he leaves DC

Rishabh Pant made his comeback in the IPL 2024. The next edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2025) is going to be a bigger one, as next year there will be a mega auction. All ten teams can only retain a total of four players, and all other players will come under the hammer. Hence, we might see some big names coming to the auction. Rishabh Pant is certainly one of the biggest names.

Some media reports suggest that Delhi Capitals are not happy with Pant, and they might consider releasing him or trading him. Pant was the top scorer for DC in the IPL 2024 and scored 446 runs in 13 innings. If he leaves the Delhi franchise, then there will be a number of teams who will love to have him on their side. Here, we will talk about three teams that can pick Rishabh Pant ahead of the IPL 2025.

3. Mumbai Indians

Rishabh Pant and Rohit Sharma

Mumbai Indians will be one of those teams that can pick Rishabh Pant. Currently, Ishan Kishan is the wicketkeeper for MI, and with his price of INR 16 crore, there are very few chances that MI can retain him. That’s where they can look to sign Rishabh Pant. He is an Indian wicketkeeper who can bat anywhere and can also be considered the future captain of MI.

2. Royal Challengers Bengaluru

Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant

Royal Challengers Bengaluru can be one of those teams that can be big for Pant. Dinesh Karthik has retired from the IPL, and RCB needs a wicketkeeper batter. Then, there are chances that RCB might release Faf du Plessis and look for a new captain. Rishabh Pant ticks all these boxes, so it won’t be a surprise if RCB tries to trade him from DC ahead of the IPL 2025.

1. Chennai Super Kings

Rishabh Pant and MS Dhoni
MS Dhoni and Rishabh Pant

The five-time champion Chennai Super Kings are one of those who can look to have on their side. MS Dhoni is at the end of his career, and there is no guarantee that he will play in the IPL 2025 or not. Then, CSK needs an Indian wicketkeeper, and Pant can be a brilliant choice. Pant can also lead the team after MS Dhoni, and if he joins CSK, then MSD can also decide to retire.

Gautam Gambhir’s KKR’s colleagues Ten Doeschate and Abhishek Nayar set to join as India’s assistant coaches – Report

0

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) appointed former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir as India’s head coach, after Rahul Dravid. Gambhir has come up with a number of new things for the Indian cricket team. Suryakumar Yadav was appointed the T20I captain, while Shubman Gill got the responsibility of vice captain in ODIs and T20Is.

Now it looks like India’s Gautam Gambhir has brought some of his former KKR coaches to the Indian cricket team. As per the report from Cricbuzz, the BCCI are set to appoint former Indian cricketer Abhishek Nayar and former Netherlands’ all-rounder Ryan ten Doeschate as assistant coaches for the team. Meanwhile, T. Dilip is expected to retain his place as a fielding coach as well.

Ten Doeschate and Abhishek Nayar to join India as assistant coaches with Gautam Gambhir – Reports

Ten Doeschate and Abhishek Nayar to join India as assistant coaches with Gautam Gambhir Reports
Gautam Gambhir's KKR's colleagues Ten Doeschate and Abhishek Nayar set to join as India's assistant coaches - Report 13

According to Cricbuzz, both Ryan ten Doeschate and Abhishek Nayar will be joining Team India for the coming Sri Lanka tour, whcih will be played between July 27 and August 8. India will play three ODIs and three T20is on this tour, and it will be the first series for Gautam Gambhir as head coach.

Nayar is likely to travel with Team India to Sri Lanka. However, Ten Doeschate is currently with the LA Knight Riders in the ongoing Major League Cricket 2024 as an assistant coach. Hence, he is expected to join Team India later in Colombo.

These two are currently part of the Kolkata Knight Riders, and Gautam Gambhir was the mentor for the team in the IPL 2024. That’s where Gambhir’s inclusion as head coach is one of the reasons for the BCCI selecting them for assistant coaches’ roles. Meanwhile, T. Dilip, who was with Dravid, will retain his position.

However, now only the spot of bowling coach is vacant. Morne Morkel, who worked with Gautam Gambhir during his stint with the Lucknow Super Giants, is the front-runner for this position. If everything goes well, the former South African pacer is likely to join the team very soon.

Will BCCI’s stern decision over Test selection improve India’s chances in the 2025 World Test Championship?

India has been one of the best sides in Test cricket, as they have played both the World Test Championship finals after qualifying for both of them being placed as the best side leading the WTC points table.

This time around as well, India is leading the WTC points table for 2023-2025 and has three series left in the longest format of the game before they can find themselves a spot in the third consecutive WTC final. With India being the only constant in both finals, they have first lost to New Zealand and next to the Aussies, so there are some flaws in the Indian side, as the arguably best Test side in the world has faced repetitive setbacks in consecutive ICC World Test Championships.

India could not secure the title under one of India’s greatest players in the format, Rahul Dravid; however, Gambhir will lead India for the first time as a coach if India makes it to the finals. Alongside Gambhir’s suggestion, the BCCI has given their players a firm resolute that their participation in domestic tests is a must to be included for the final international level.

The BCCI has announced that every player who plays for India in the highest format of the game will have to play in either every or at least some of the matches in the Duleep Trophy. This has been a recent problem: national team players often refrain from participating in first-class or List A cricket at the domestic level.

Players like Shubman Gill, Rishabh Pant, and others do not prefer to play cricket for their state teams. India faced a major setback with their young opening batsman, Gill, as he struggled in the longest format and was a great disappointment for India in both the WTC finals.

Since the World Test Championship finals are being played at the most reputed grounds in Europe, this time they are likely to be held at the iconic Lord’s Stadium.India has never lifted an ICC trophy at Lord’s since their first-ever trophy in the 1983 World Cup, where India led by Kapil Dev crushed the mighty Windies to secure their first-ever victory in World Cups and also at Lord’s.

This might also be Rohit Sharma’s showdown in the longest format of the game, and so for the veteran Kohli as well. With the two legends parting ways with the longest format, this might be their last chance to secure a good win. However, the BCCI has relieved the three veterans, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah. They have been given the liberty to choose whether they want to participate in the domestic games, unlike others who have to play domestic games to surely feature for India at the highest level.

Indian young players who are likely to make it to the WTC finals in 2025, Jaiswal and Pant, will be India’s preferred choices for the same. Led by skipper Sharma, as said by Jay Shah, and having the likes of Virat Kohli, India might give chances to a few new talents like Shreyas Iyer or recall players Pandya and KL Rahul to replace greats like Pujara and Rahane who are set to retire from the format.

YOU MAY LIKE IT: With Hardik Pandya’s India captaincy snub, does he stand a chance to retain his position as the MI skipper?

Also, with not many chances left for Ravi Ashwin to feature for India under Gambhir, he might look to Jadeja, Axar, and probably Washington Sundar as their key all-rounders in the competition. The Duleep Trophy will play a vital role in the team selection for Gambhir’s two recent test outings against Bangladesh and New Zealand, which are going to be home series’ for the Men in Blue.

Mohammed Shami said I don’t think Gujarat Titans will retain me in IPL 2025

0

Indian team and Gujarat Titans star pace bowler Mohammed Shami is now practicing in the nets after ankle surgery. He is out of the Indian team after the 2023 ODI World Cup. There is speculation that he may return to the team in the Test series against Bangladesh.

Shami has been out of the cricket field for a long time due to ankle surgery. He was also out of IPL 2024 and the T20 World Cup 2024 held in USA and West Indies.

Shami has been playing for Gujarat Titans for the last two seasons, and in just two seasons, he has taken 48 wickets for the franchise. Shami is one of those players on whom no franchise trusts for a long time, he is dropped from the team despite consistently performing well for the franchise.

There is a mega auction of IPL in 2025, according to the rules, each franchise can retain four players in its team. In such a situation, after asking Mohammed Shami about his IPL-2025 retention in an interview, he gave such an answer.

“I don’t have any team in mind. I was not retained by Delhi Capitals. I took 60 wickets for the Punjab Kings, but they allowed me to leave, and I joined Gujarat. I have taken 48 scalps for them in just two seasons, and if they don’t retain me, I don’t care. I will give my best for the team who buy me in the auction. If Gujarat need performers, they will retain players, but if they want good faces, they can opt for models. I have a clear perspective in life. I want to give my best,” – Mohammed Shami

With Hardik Pandya’s India captaincy snub, does he stand a chance to retain his position as the MI skipper?

0

Hardik Pandya, one of the World Cup heroes for India, has always been a very special player for the Men in Blue across formats at several ICC tournaments. Pandya had a very decent season with both bat and ball in the World Cup, with his biggest contributions being wickets against Pakistan and his 3-fer that also included Miller’s wicket, which won India the spine-chilling T20 World Cup final. With this, India ended their 13-year drought without a World Cup trophy.

However, just three weeks after the great World Cup triumph, Hardik’s world has turned upside down. With a shattered personal life, Pandya was recently snubbed of the captaincy role for India’s T20I. Suryakumar was appointed as the recent successor of retiring skipper Rohit Sharma; this marked a major setback in the all-rounder’s career.

Now, after his major setback at the international level, what will be his future with the IPL’s most successful franchise? Pandya left MI for a big-budget move to the Gujarat Titans in 2022, and in their debut season, the exceptional all-rounder led them to a trophy triumph. After taking the Titans to yet another final in 2023, he was brought back to the Mumbai Indians camp and took over Rohit’s position.

Hardik did not receive the best of receptions from the MI crowd, as he was disgusted over the behavior of the crowd all over India. Hardik even could not up the morale of the team, as despite having one of the finest teams in the competition, the Mumbai Indians ended last in the points table. After having a disastrous season, it was often said that Hardik could be snubbed of such a crucial role.

With the IPL 2025 probably being a mega auction, there are high chances of Rohit Sharma leaving the MI den after 15 long seasons with the franchise team. MI would surely prioritize having him back; however, it would depend on whether the World Cup-winning skipper would want to continue his tenure with the team, especially when teams like the Kolkata Knight Riders, Delhi Capitals, and Gujarat Titans have shown prior interest in the veteran.

The BCCI has yet to declare how many retentions each team can make, and so MI needs to set their priorities straight. However, they also have a blockbuster batter and India’s recently announced T20 skipper, Suryakumar Yadav, in their roster.

ALSO READ: IND vs SL: With Gaikwad out, Pant and Pandya back, what will be India’s likely starting XI in T20Is under the new skipper and new coach, Gambhir?

SKY can be vital for retention, and he would also have a desire to lead the IPL’s most renowned side. Though Pandya still has his chances, looking at his good insight into the captaincy and his participation in the Champions Trophy can also turn the tables for him if he has a probable great campaign at the Vijay Hazare Trophy for Baroda.

Another Mumbai Indians player to lead the Men in Blue on international level.

However, there remains a chance that Suryakumar Yadav can be a successful skipper with the Men in Blue, and then the Mumbai Indians might look to rope him in for a season as their stand-in skipper. So clearly, Hardik’s chances of retaining his IPL captaincy have also been largely threatened following his national disappointment.

IND vs SL: With Gaikwad out, Pant and Pandya back, what will be India’s likely starting XI in T20Is under the new skipper and new coach, Gambhir?

IND vs SL: India’s tour of Sri Lanka will be Gautam Gambhir’s first major international assignment, and he will step on the ground alongside a new Indian team led by Suryakumar Yadav.

India recently announced the squad on the 18th of July, and the squad already had many surprises in itself, the biggest of them being Ruturaj Gaikwad, who dropped from the T20I team. Rohit Sharma likely made a return to the ODI side alongside veteran Virat Kohli on the urge of Gambhir, as the senior pros kept their new coach’s word.

India has dropped off the likes of optional openers Abhishek Sharma and Ruturaj Gaikwad; hence, Gambhir now only has the likes of Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal in the position. The middle order is revived from the T20 World Cup squad; however, Virat’s No. 3 position is still debatable.

India’s Likely Starting XI in T20s:

Openers: Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal

Gill has been named the vice captain of the Indian side in both formats of white-ball cricket, surpassing several senior players. This decision by the BCCI proclaimed that Gill will now be a constant for India across all formats, and looking at Jaiswal’s undeniable form in T20s, he is likely to pair alongside the new young vice captain.

Middle-order: Rishabh Pant, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, and Rinku Singh

Including the vital top-order position of No. 3 in the middle-order, Gambhir will have his most experienced bunch of players in for it. Though initially it was thought that Gaikwad would be featured at No. 3, replacing the legend Virat Kohli, Gambhir, in his very first outing, dropped the aspiring cricketer from the team.

Now, hopefully, with Pant’s return, he is most likely to come in at No. 3 for the Men in Blue, as he was seen in the position for India in the T20 World Cup. Next at no. 4 would be India’s newly appointed skipper, Suryakumar Yadav, who has been India’s and probably the world’s best T20I batter and was recently dethroned by Head for the no. 1 ranking.

Now that Hardik Pandya is back, he is likely to come in at No. 5. However, there is immense competition for the 6th spot, as Rinku Singh is India’s talisman in the position. However, there are the likes of Sanju Samson, Shivam Dube, and youngster Riyan Parag for the same.

This will be up to Gambhir as to who he wants to place in his starting XI, with Rinku and Dube being the forerunners. Parag is not likely to feature.

Lower-middle order and bowlers: Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Khaleel Ahmed, Arshdeep Singh, and Ravi Bishnoi

Axar Patel can now be considered a constant for the Indian side as a spin bowling all-rounder, as he takes up Ravindra Jadeja’s role in the side. Equally efficient at hitting the ball cleanly, Axar has shown he can often be promoted up the order in difficult times.

Washington Sundar, the man of the series from the Zimbabwe tour, is likely to feature in the Men in Blue side; Bishnoi will be doubtful as that would land three spinners in the side. However, with Pandya bowling his full spell and Dube also having a hand, India can feature their spin options to the limit.

With missing ace pacers Jasprit Bumrah, Khaleel Ahmed, and Arshdeep Singh leading India’s pace attack, they have World Cup campaigner Md. Siraj, but under Gambhir, he would not have many chances to feature. The left-armers will produce the quality needed by the Indian team at both the powerplay and the death overs.

India’s likely Starting XI:

  1. Shubman Gill (vc)
  2. Yashasvi Jaiswal
  3. Rishabh Pant (wk)
  4. Suryakumar Yadav
  5. Hardik Pandya
  6. Rinku Singh and Shivam Dube
  7. Axar Patel
  8. Washington Sundar
  9. Ravi Bishnoi
  10. Khaleel Ahmed
  11. Arshdeep Singh
