IND vs SL: India is all set to tour Sri Lanka on the 27th of this month. India will play their first series under the new head coach, Gautam Gambhir, who will remain with the Indian team for all major tournaments until 2027.

The tour will comprise three T20Is, which will be played at the Pallekele International Stadium, and then the team will move to the capital city of Colombo for the ODI series. Team India has not yet announced the squads for either the T20I or the ODI series, as the team meeting is to be held on the 18th of July.

As per reports from ESPNcricinfo, Gautam Gambhir had earlier urged the Indian skipper to be available for the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka. Though Gambhir had also requested the same for veteran Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah, they might not be featured in the series.

Players’ Status and Availability

Though nothing has been fixed, Rohit Sharma might be making a comeback with the Indian team for the ODI series at the behest of the new Indian head coach’s request. However, it is almost confirmed that both Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah are sure to not feature for the Men in Blue.

One of India’s top run-scorers and better players in the Cricket World Cup of 2023, Shreyas Iyer, who was dropped from the BCCI annual contract, is expected to return to the Indian side under Gambhir’s tenure.

Hardik Pandya has also asked the BCCI not to include him in the ODI series due to some family concerns, and hence he is set to be replaced by Sanju Samson, who will now be seen with the Indian team in the longer limited-overs format as well.

The last keynote would be the captaincy options, and Suryakumar Yadav will likely be seen as the new T20I skipper for India, maybe in a permanent role till the next World Cup in 2026. However, if Rohit fails to make it to the ODi series, then KL Rahul might be seen as his deputy with the captain’s band for the series.

IND vs SL: The much-awaited tour, which will be the new India head coach Gautam Gambhir’s first assignment has been in the buzz for quite some time. However, the squad for the tour has now been delayed over a while, as it was supposed to be declared earlier this week and was then dated on the 17th of July.

Now, as per reports the team meeting for the same has been delayed by a day, as the team selectors and head coach are supposed to address the board members with the final squad on Thursday, 18th of July and then make an announcement.

It has been reported, that the delay is over two main reasons, with one being Gambhir’s demand to have all the senior players available for the Sri Lanka ODIs and the second being the dilemma over appointing Pandya or Suryakumar for the role of the T20I captain.

Previously Hardik Pandya has had many seasons as a skipper in the IPL, as he has captained the Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians and has had quite some success with a title in 2022 with the Gujarat Titans.

Surya on the other hand started his career majorly in the IPL with Gambhir-led Kolkata Knight Riders and has appeared in over 150 matches scoring 3000+ runs in the world-class domestic league. He had the best season with the Mumbai Indians ahead of World Cup 2023, as he scored 600+ runs in IPL 2023 averaging over 60.

Surya has led India in 7 T20I matches, of which the Men in Blue have secured a win on 5 occasions while losing only a single game. Ex-Indian skipper, Rohit Sharma and newly appointed head coach, Gautam Gambhir have also sided with Suryakumar Yadav for the role of India’s T20I captain.

After winning the T20 World Cup 2024, the Indian team is moving towards the Champions Trophy 2025 to be held in Pakistan. BCCI has also taken important steps for this big tournament like appointing Gautam Gambhir as the head coach of the Men in Blue.

After the Zimbabwe tour, the Indian team will now go on a tour of Sri Lanka where a three-match T20I series and a three-match ODI series will be played between the two Asian teams.

This series will start with a T20I match, the first T20 match will be played on 27 July. All three T20 matches will be played at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium. The first ODI match will be played on 2 August, all three ODI matches will be played at R.Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

The official announcement of the Indian team for the Sri Lanka tour has not been made but according to sources, the team will be announced by Sunday 21. According to ESPN, Indian team head coach Gautam Gambhir has demanded to make Suryakumar Yadav the full-time captain of the T20I. Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from short format after T20 World Cup 2024, after which questions are being raised on captaincy.

Almost the same teams can be selected in the T20I squad that went to Zimbabwe tour under the captaincy of Shubh Gill. Senior players like Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav and Kuldeep Yadav can be a part of the squad.

Jadeja might not have been as successful as the two greats mentioned above in the shorter format, but the CSK all-rounder has often been one of India’s most trustworthy aids.

Having scored 500+ runs and 50+ wickets in the format internationally for India, Jadeja was an inevitable part of the Indian team. Though Axar Patel stands as the set all-rounder for India across all three formats, India would still look to have another backup option who can play the role of Jadeja whenever India needs someone like the spin-bowling all-rounder.
