IND vs SL 2024: Latest Team Updates, Squad, Player Availability, and More

IND vs SL: India is all set to tour Sri Lanka on the 27th of this month. India will play their first series under the new head coach, Gautam Gambhir, who will remain with the Indian team for all major tournaments until 2027.

The tour will comprise three T20Is, which will be played at the Pallekele International Stadium, and then the team will move to the capital city of Colombo for the ODI series. Team India has not yet announced the squads for either the T20I or the ODI series, as the team meeting is to be held on the 18th of July.

As per reports from ESPNcricinfo, Gautam Gambhir had earlier urged the Indian skipper to be available for the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka. Though Gambhir had also requested the same for veteran Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah, they might not be featured in the series.

IPL-winning skipper and ex-KKR mentor Gautam Gambhir will look to make a comeback for the Indian side. Yes, it is the World Cup campaigner, Shreyas Iyer, who had a wonderful World Cup in 2023, who was ruled out of a contract by the BCCi, and now he is looking to make a comeback.

Probable Squads for the Sri Lanka Tour

India’s probable squad for Sri Lanka T20I: Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Abhishek Sharma, Rishabh Pant, Sanju Samson, Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Arshdeep Singh, Avesh Khan, Ravi Bishnoi, Mukesh Kumar, and Rinku Singh.

India’s probable squad for the Sri Lanka ODI is: Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ruturaj Gaikwad, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Sanju Samson, Axar Patel, Shreyas Iyer, Ravindra Jadeja, Md. Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav, Avesh Khan, Khaleel Ahmed, and Arshdeep Singh.

Players’ Status and Availability

Though nothing has been fixed, Rohit Sharma might be making a comeback with the Indian team for the ODI series at the behest of the new Indian head coach’s request. However, it is almost confirmed that both Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah are sure to not feature for the Men in Blue.

One of India’s top run-scorers and better players in the Cricket World Cup of 2023, Shreyas Iyer, who was dropped from the BCCI annual contract, is expected to return to the Indian side under Gambhir’s tenure.

Hardik Pandya has also asked the BCCI not to include him in the ODI series due to some family concerns, and hence he is set to be replaced by Sanju Samson, who will now be seen with the Indian team in the longer limited-overs format as well.

The last keynote would be the captaincy options, and Suryakumar Yadav will likely be seen as the new T20I skipper for India, maybe in a permanent role till the next World Cup in 2026. However, if Rohit fails to make it to the ODi series, then KL Rahul might be seen as his deputy with the captain’s band for the series.

IND vs SL: The much-awaited tour, which will be the new India head coach Gautam Gambhir’s first assignment has been in the buzz for quite some time. However, the squad for the tour has now been delayed over a while, as it was supposed to be declared earlier this week and was then dated on the 17th of July.

Now, as per reports the team meeting for the same has been delayed by a day, as the team selectors and head coach are supposed to address the board members with the final squad on Thursday, 18th of July and then make an announcement.

It has been reported, that the delay is over two main reasons, with one being Gambhir’s demand to have all the senior players available for the Sri Lanka ODIs and the second being the dilemma over appointing Pandya or Suryakumar for the role of the T20I captain.

Previously Hardik Pandya has had many seasons as a skipper in the IPL, as he has captained the Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians and has had quite some success with a title in 2022 with the Gujarat Titans.

Surya on the other hand started his career majorly in the IPL with Gambhir-led Kolkata Knight Riders and has appeared in over 150 matches scoring 3000+ runs in the world-class domestic league. He had the best season with the Mumbai Indians ahead of World Cup 2023, as he scored 600+ runs in IPL 2023 averaging over 60.

Surya has led India in 7 T20I matches, of which the Men in Blue have secured a win on 5 occasions while losing only a single game. Ex-Indian skipper, Rohit Sharma and newly appointed head coach, Gautam Gambhir have also sided with Suryakumar Yadav for the role of India’s T20I captain.

Though Pandya has had a record worth looking at as a T20 captain, it could not overshadow the over-injured status of the Mumbai Indians skipper. Rohit has said that the 33-year-old who is more senior and mature than Pandya would be hence a declared ideal choice to lead India not only in the series against Sri Lanka but also he will be though as India’s longtime successor of Rohit, as he might lead India upto the T20 World Cup 2026.

IND vs SL: With Jadeja gone, will Washington Sundar be India’s go-to all-rounder alongside Axar in T20s?

IND vs SL: Though most of the buzz has been around Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, the other man who also announced his retirement after the T20 World Cup triumph was Ravindra Jadeja. Jadeja might not have been as successful as the two greats mentioned above in the shorter format, but the CSK all-rounder has often been one of India’s most trustworthy aids.

Having scored 500+ runs and 50+ wickets in the format internationally for India, Jadeja was an inevitable part of the Indian team. Though Axar Patel stands as the set all-rounder for India across all three formats, India would still look to have another backup option who can play the role of Jadeja whenever India needs someone like the spin-bowling all-rounder.

Under newly appointed coach Gautam Gambhir, who is all set to take a new team comprising a fresh bunch of talented players to Sri Lanka for the T20I format, Sri Lanka would also be looking for a player who can be an ideal replacement for the veteran all-rounder.

However, India has already started to experiment with the IPL’s talented batting all-rounders, Abhishek Sharma and Riyan Parag. Still, all these players have their prowess lying in the batting half, while Jadeja’s replacement would be expected to be more of a bowling all-rounder who can be counted on to bowl his entire spell.

After India’s recent success on the Zimbabwe tour, India relished the success of Washington Sundar. Though Sundar has been given a chance to feature for India for several years now, he has never found the opportunity to be a part of their first-choice squad due to the presence of Jadeja. Having featured in India across all three formats, the 24-year-old has played over 70 matches in the blue shirt and was a part of India’s team that won the gold medal at the Asian Games.

Now that Jadeja is gone and the spot is open for several players, Sundar has the opportunity of a lifetime to fix his spot in Gambhir’s T20I squad for the Men in Blue. Targeting the next T20 World Cup in 2026, Gambhir will be looking to build his team, and just like the Zimbabwe tour, if Washington continues with his stunning form, he can be the most ideal replacement for the departing veteran.

3 Reasons why Hardik Pandya is a better choice than Suryakumar Yadav to be T20I captain

0

Hardik Pandya is one of the most impactful cricketers in T20 internationals. His ability to win matches with the bat and the ball makes him a valuable asset for India in the white-ball format. He is among the best all-rounders in the game right now. That’s why India made him the vice-captain in the white-ball format.

Hardik Pandya even played a crucial role for India in the recently concluded ICC T20 World Cup 2024 in both departments. He was considered the next white-ball captain for India after Rohit. But recently, some media reports confirmed that India, under new head coach Gautam Gambhir, is looking to appoint Suryakumar Yadav as T20I captain. Hence, we will talk about three strong reasons why Hardik Pandya is more deserving to be T20I captain than Suryakumar.

Three Reasons why Hardik Pandya is a better choice for T20I captaincy than Suryakumar Yadav

1. Adds more Value to them

Hardik Pandya
Hardik Pandya

Without a doubt, Suryakumar Yadav is a beast when it comes to the T20I format and has been among the top ranked Indian batters for a while now. But he has his limitations, not in terms of batting but in terms of his contribution. With the bat, if he had odd days, he might not be able to do much. But with Hardik Pandya, you get everything. You will see him batting, bowling, and fielding, and that’s what you need as a leader, who can perform in every department.

2. Performance in Big Stage

Hardik Pandya ICC T20 World Cup 2024
Hardik Pandya

If we look at some of the last few ICC events, we will see that Hardik Pandya has been more consistent and has done well with the bat and the ball both. That’s what you need from your captain, who should know how to perform on the big stage. Even in the recently concluded ICC T20 World Cup 2024, Hardik scored 144 runs at a strike rate of 151.57 and also took 11 wickets with the ball, while Suryakumar scored 199 runs. Hence, if we consider his performance in ICC events, Hardik has a clear edge.

3. Captaincy Experience

Leave everything aside. India have been one of the strongest teams in the world, and you need a player who has captaincy experience. Hardik, who has led Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians in the IPL and has also done captaincy for India, is a more experienced leader as compared to Suryakumar. The all-rounder knows how to take decisions under pressure and do well because he has been in the captain’s shoes many times.

IND vs SL: With Rohit Sharma back on the Indian side, 3 opening combinations that Gambhir can try out for ODIs

IND vs SL: With the squads awaited today, many recent speculations have stated that Gambhir has urged the former Indian skipper to be a part of his first outing as an international coach; however, nothing has been reverted back by either Rohit Sharma or veteran batter Virat Kohli.

Rohit led India to a famous T20 World Cup victory in the US, ending their years of trophy drought in World Cups. After their triumph, both the veterans, Rohit and Virat, pulled the curtains on their splendorous T20I careers. Alongside retiring from the shortest format of the game, the two have asked for some time off from international duty from the BCCI.

However, first, it was largely anticipated that India would not have their veterans playing in the Sri Lanka tour in the ODIs; however, Gambhir, after being appointed as the head coach, has requested both the legendary batters to be a part of the ODI squad in Sri Lanka.

If Rohit is picked for the Sri Lanka tour, what opening combinations can Gambhir try alongside the Indian skipper at one end?

3. Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma

The same old duo—we have seen these two opening for India since Shikhar Dhawan was dropped from the Indian side. Gill rose to prominence at the end of 2022, when he played unstoppable hands against New Zealand and other teams. After a stunning season with the Titans in the IPL, Gill was picked for India’s opening spot alongside Rohit Sharma.

However, Gill has not been able to meet the expectations of his selectors and was dropped from the Indian side in the shortest format, and though Gambhir might give him a chance alongside Rohit, it would only be an opportunity for the youngster to prove his worth in the format.

2. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Rohit Sharma

India has now finally seen the bright prospects in Gaikwad, and if not now, then it would be late, as the 27-year-old is in fine form and is mature enough to open in the format alongside the skipper.

Rohit, who is often known as a batsman who likes to play his shorts, does need a batsman who is composed and mature enough to keep the scoreboard ticking. The CSK skipper is praised by even the new Indian coach and is seen to be an all-format cricketer for the Men in Blue.

1. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma

Jaiswal, one of the finest young talents in the entire world of cricket, has already been picked as a constant for India’s test as well as the T20I squad. The player who has made quite an impact in his List A career domestically, scoring a great double hundred as well, is yet to feature for the Men in Blue in the one-day format.

However, with Gambhir often seen with his aggressive mindset when it comes to batting, especially in the powerplay, he might look to feature the youngster with Rohit, as both can put immense pressure on the bowlers from both ends with their high-quality shots and intent to score at a higher rate.

Gambhir might be trying either or combinations, with the presence of Rohit Sharma; however, nothing is confirmed till the squad for India’s tour of Sri Lanka is announced.

3 Reasons why Suryakumar Yadav is a Perfect Choice for India’s T20I Captain

    0

Suryakumar Yadav has been India’s best T20I player for a while now, and he has been the highest-ranked T20I player for India for the last few years. Famosly known as “India’s Mr. 360,” Suryakumar is also the top scorer in T20is for India in the last 2–3 years. Hence, the new coaching staff, led by Gautam Gambhir, might appoint him as the new T20I captain.

Rohit Sharma announced his T20I retirement after the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 win, and India are in search of a new captain. Suryakumar Yadav, with his ability in this format, is a good candidate for this position. And if he becomes the T20I captain, there will be no surprise about it. Hence, we will talk about three genuine reasons why Suryakumar Yadav is the right person to lead India in T20Is.

Three Reasons why Suryakumar Yadav is the right person to lead India in T20 Internationals

    1. Focus on One Format

Suryakumar Yadav doesn’t play Tests and also gets very limited chances in ODIs. Hence, he is more of a one-format player, which can be a good reason. T20I is his forte, and with the added responsibility of captaincy, he can focus more on this format. Meanwhile, Hardik is someone who is regular in T20Is and ODIs and is also an injury-prone player. That’s where Suryakumar Yadav is pretty good for T20I captaincy.

      2. Team’s Best Player to Lead the Team

Three Reasons why Suryakumar Yadav is the right person to lead India in T20 Internationals
      Suryakumar Yadav

With Rohit and Virat Kohli retiring from T20Is, a lot of burden will come on Suryakumar Yadav’s shoulders because he will be the next player to carry India’s T20I cricket forward. He is still India’s best T20I batter, and you need someone who can lead the team from the front with his performances as well. Hence, Surya’s consistency in T20Is is another reason why he is a good person to lead the team in the shorter format.

      3. Rotation Policy

Three Reasons why Suryakumar Yadav is the right person to lead India in T20 Internationals 1
      Suryakumar Yadav

India are set to place 35 T20Is more before the T20 World Cup 2026 at home, and as seen in the last few years, the management tends to give proper rest to the seniors, including Hardik. That’s where SKY is someone who is a regular player in India’s T20I team because he is not active in the other two formats. And with Suryakumar Yadav becoming the captain, India can give proper rest to senior players because now every year there is an ICC event lined up.

IND vs SL: Gambhir urges senior pros to be part of his first international assignment with the Men in Blue. Will Rohit and Virat be back in India’s ODI squad?

      0

IND vs SL: Since India’s T20 World Cup triumph, they have been in the buzz. After the World Cup, Gautam Gambhir replaced departing coach Rahul Dravid, and India’s tour to Sri Lanka will be his first major assignment.

This series will be India’s first chance to appoint a team that may play in the Champions Trophy. From here begins Team India’s journey under Head Coach Gautam Gambhir. He is known for his aggressive mindset in the game and is widely popular for taking tough calls, which once again he will be seen making in the Men in Blue camp.

His first major showdown came quickly as Suryakumar Yadav was picked for India’s T20I captain over long-speculated all-rounder Hardik Pandya. However, now Gautam has urged the senior players of the team to feature in his first major international outing.

After retiring from the shortest format of the game, ex-skipper Rohit Sharma and veteran batter Virat Kohli requested the BCCi have them off the India squad for quite some time. Ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah also called some time off, as he wanted some recovery time.

However, Gautam Gambhir has personally requested to include the three veterans in his team for the India tour. With Hardik Pandya also having requested to not be included in the longest format of limited overs cricket for the tour, the squad will be highly anticipated.

In case Rohit and Virat make their way back to the team, Rahul, who is speculated to get an ODI captaincy opportunity, will be denied the same. Also, many players might not help them find a spot. Especially the series might make openings for players like Shreyas Iyer, which might not be possible if Virat plays in the series.

The BCCI and Indian selectors are supposed to announce their selected 15-man squad for the T20I and ODI series against Sri Lanka. From here, a saga of Indian cricket begins under Gautam Gambhir, with his sights set on the upcoming Champions Trophy.

AUS vs ENG: What are the Australians trying to rebuild their squad for the Champions Trophy as they start experimenting on the England tour?

AUS vs ENG: The Champions Trophy is back and is scheduled to be played in Pakistan in 2025. Just like several other teams, the mighty Aussies are also looking to consolidate their hold on the format with several new players who are replacing the likes of the veterans, who were a part of Australia’s World Cup-winning squad in 2023.

First among them and probably the greatest would be David Warner, the veteran who has been a huge slave to Australian cricket and retired from all formats of the game recently after the end of the T20 World Cup. Warner was seen opening alongside Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh in the last World Cup; however, the Aussies will be in the quest for a batter to replace him in the role.

Veteran pacers Josh Hazelwood, Mitchell Starc, and all-rounders Glenn Maxwell, as well as veteran batter Steven Smith, are all either too old or lacking in form. Though they have chances to feature in the Champions Trophy, the Aussies would look to land some replacements for them in the long run.

With the Champions Trophy in sight, Australia will have their first breakthrough series in the format to access their experiments in the 50-over format, and the outing will be a tour of England in the upcoming contest on September of 2024.

The first breakthrough for a player has been for Jake Fraser-McGurk. The young Australian opener has been in the buzz with his splendid performances across several competitions in the world. In his short appearance, he already holds the record for the fastest hundred in List-A cricket, having registered it in just 29 balls.

Considering Travis Head’s unstoppable form for over 2 years now, he remains Australia’s constant surprise across all formats of the game, and so will he be seen against England in the ODIs.

Though the likes of Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne have been picked for the ODIs, Team Australia would undoubtedly look to bring out some of their experiments, including players like Cameron Green and Josh Inglis in the role. Green has already shown how classy a batter the big West Australian all-rounder can be whenever he is provided the role to bat up the order.

YOU MAY LIKE TO KNOW: Warner ruled off chances in the Champions Trophy – “David is retired for us” says Chief Selector Bailey

Inglis has, however, played only in the shortest format for the Aussies, and keeping aside his role as a wicketkeeper, he can be included as a batter in the middle order. With the likes of skipper Marsh at 3 and Green at 5, Glenn Maxwell might find himself more in a finisher’s role at No. 6, with the likes of Matt Short securing some chances at the veterans’ place.

With Marcus Stoinis set to miss the England tour, several Aussie players have been looking to land themselves in the role, with the biggest contenders among them being Cam Green as well as Aaron Hardie.

In the absence of World Cup-winning skipper Pat Cummins, the Aussies will be led by Mitchell Marsh, and the pace bowling will be shepherded by veteran pacer Mitchell Starc, with Hazelwood, Hardie, Ellis, Abbott, and Zampa being their only spinners. The Aussies do not have much to choose from the bunch of players on the bowling deck.

Likely with changes, the Aussies will be in the quest to build a perfect team for the upcoming Champions Trophy and will also be eyeing the World Cup title defence some years later, in 2027.

IND vs SL: Some saw it coming: Suryakumar Yadav placed ahead of Hardik Pandya for the captaincy role in Sri Lanka T20Is

IND vs SL: With speculations over, who will Gambhir consider as a more viable option for the role of the Indian captain for the upcoming T20I series against Sri Lanka? Suryakumar Yadav has been chosen for the role.

It has been decided that India will be led in the 3-match T20I series by Suryakumar and not Hardik Pandya. However, Hardik was seen as Rohit’s deputy in the T20 World Cup and is even a far more experienced skipper as compared to Surya. However, despite all this, Surya is picked as the captain, and the decision does not seem very unlikely looking at Hardik’s often injured status.

Hardik Pandya has led India in a total of 16 T20 internationals and has led the Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians in the IPL. Though he was mostly booed for his captaincy takeover in the MI den, Pandya showed sheer dominance with the Titans.

Suryakumar is now set to replace outgoing captain Rohit Sharma in the role. SKY is much more of a regular player for India in the shortest format of the game. He is undoubtedly the most consistent performer for India in the format, and he also saw some success with the Men in Blue later in 2023 when he led India to a 4-1 victory over then-recent World Cup champions Australia.

ALSO READ: IND vs SL: With concerns over Hardik’s injuries, Gambhir would look for a more dependable candidate in the role of India’s T20I skipper

With Gautam Gambhir having stepped in as the new India head coach, he might be looking at Suryakumar in the series to foresee him as a permanent skipper for India in T20Is. Just after a young Indian team led by Shubman Gill put on a show to win a 4-1 series against Zimbabwe, Indian selectors would be looking forward to giving more of a chance to their upcoming generations during the team announcement on Wednesday.
