Veteran batter Dinesh Karthik named RCB batting coach and mentor

Recently, Royal Challengers Bangalore’s director of cricket, Mo Bobat, announced Dinesh Karthik’s retention with RCB as their batting coach and mentor for the upcoming season of IPL 2025.

A sneak peek into the vast career of Dinesh Karthik

The 39-year-old veteran batter and captain of the Tamil Nadu state team has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket after his final appearance for the RCB in the Eliminator of IPL 2024. The ex-India wicketkeeper batsman has had immense experience and has mastered the league, with him being one of the seven players who have featured in all editions of the Indian Premier League.

Karthik has played 26 tests, 94 ODIs, and 60 T20Is for the Men in Blue, the debut of which he marked 20 years back in 2004. Since the inaugural season of 2008, the wk-batter has featured for 6 different franchise teams across 17 editions of the IPL. Featuring over 257 games, he has a splendid 4842 runs at a hefty career strike-rate of 135.36 and is often regarded as one of the most key finishers for the sides he has played in.

In his last IPL stint with the Royal Challengers, which he ended in 2024, he scored a great 326 runs at a blistering strike rate of 187.35. RCB’s unit has recognized his immense talent and widespread experience and has made up its mind to retain him as their batting coach and mentor.

DK’s enrolment into the coaching manual

Karthik, who was first seen in a coaching role with the English side in January in their preparatory games, will be seen as RCB’s coach alongside head coach Andy Flower, bowling instructor Adam Griffith, and director of cricket Mo Bobat.

Since his retirement, Karthik has always kept the buzz alive, saying that he would prefer to be a full-time coach and broadcaster post his retirement from the game.
When informed about his signing as RCB’s new mentor, he claimed to the press that this is a whole new experience for the veteran.

DK’s perspective on being appointed as RCB’s new mentor

From RCB’s point of view, Bobat claimed that he was always thrilling on the field and is expected to be equally impactful as a coach. His dedication, professionalism, and his calibre to bounce back are something worth learning for the youngsters in the RCB camp. The RCB director seemed more than excited to see DK in this whole new avatar, beginning his latest professional chapter.

Not only the players or the millions of Indian spectators who were awaiting this glorious moment went all smiles and all cries on the occasion when the Indian team finally lifted the T20 World Cup at Barbados, but also the BCCI chief went all overflown with tremendous emotions as he took to his X handle to announce a bamboozling INR 125 crore prize money for the World Cup-winning India side.

Often speculated to be one of the richest cricket boards, secretary Jay Shah never seemed to disapprove of it as he made this huge announcement to boost the morale of his players. The ICC has already shown a huge surge in the total awards, as they increased the net prize money of the ICC T20 World Cup from 5.6 million USD to 11.25 million USD in 2024.

The reigning champions have received an award of USD 2.45 million alongside their $31,154 for each match they won, and as the Men in Blue remained unbeaten, they won the prize money in all of their appearances. Not only did India have a huge surge of prize money compared to what England received in 2022, but the runners-up, South Africa, and semi-finalists, Afghanistan and England, were also awarded lump-sum amounts.

“The team has showcased exceptional talent, determination, and sportsmanship throughout the tournament. Congratulations to all the players, coaches, and support staff for this outstanding achievement!”

BCCI secretary Jay Shah on his X-handle post had said while lauding the Indian team

Indian World Cup-winning skipper Rohit Sharma and BCCI secretary Jay Shah have wholeheartedly welcomed their fans to join the celebrations of India’s victory parade at the Marine Drive and the Wankhede stadium on Thursday, 4th of July, at 5:00 pm. The celebrations are finally taking place after India’s much-awaited return from the Caribbean on Wednesday after the hurricane.

An all-rounder is very important if you are making a Dream11 team on fantasy platforms. And Luke Jongwe is an in-form all-rounder. He is someone who gives you four good overs with new and old balls and creates chances to pick up wickets. Then, he comes down the order and plays some quick cameos that can give points with the bat and the ball, which is very important on fantasy platforms. So you can have him in your Dream11 team for IND vs ZIM series.

2. Brian Bennett

The 20-year-old all-rounder, Brian Bennett, has impressed everyone with his ability to win matches in both departments. He is a powerful opener who likes to take on the bowlers right away. Brian is more of a dasher, who makes it tough for the bowlers in the powerplay. He had good performances against Bangladesh in the last T20I series and was the top scorer for Zimbabwe with wickets. There are only three players who were part of the T20 World Cup 2024 winning side.

Arshdeep Singh, Sanju Samson, and Shivam Dube are those three players. However, because these three will be travelling first to India with the winning squad and then to Zimbabwe for the T20I series, As a result, the Indian selection committee has announced the replacements for the trio. The three names which have been included are Harshit Rana, Sai Sudharsan, and Jitesh Sharma. Harshit will be the fast bowler, replacing Arshdeep. The right-arm pacer recently had a brilliant IPL 2024 with Kolkata Knight Riders, who won the title. Harshit bowled well throughout the tournament. Furthermore, India have replaced Jaiswal with another left-hander opener, Sudharsan.

Sai Sudharsan opened for Gujarat Titans. He scored 527 runs at an average and strike rate of 47.90 and 141.28, respectively. Adding to that, India looked at Samson as the first-choice keeper, along with Dhurv Jurel. But with Samson not available, India have picked up Jitesh Sharma, who has been part of the team for the last 12 months or so.

Jitesh had an average IPL 2024 with the bat, but because he has experience playing at the international level, India have picked him to replace Samson in the first two games. Arshdeep, Samson, and Dube will join the team in the third T20I, which will be played on July 10.

All five matches will be played at Harare Sports Club, Harare. It is a great opportunity for all these youngsters. India will be looking to find the ideal replacements for Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravindra Jadeja, who have retried from T20Is. The next T20 World Cup is all set to take place in India in 2026, and some of these players will be part of that event.

Shubman Gill will be the captain, so there is a certainty that he will be playing in the game. He is expected to be the first-choice opener. But Yashasvi Jaiswal is expected to be his partner. The combo of Gill and Jaiswal will give India the left-hand and right-hand combinations at the top. Both did well in the IPL, and it will be a great combination. Gill can play as an anchor, and Jaiswal can take the bowlers away.

2. Shubman Gill and Ruturaj Gaikwad

Another proven combination that the Indian team can go with in the Zimbabwe T20Is is Gill and Ruturaj Gaikwad. These two are excellent batters and like to take the game deep. Both can change gears when required, which sets a platform for the other players. Gaikwad has brilliant numbers in his limited T20I career and is a proven player who is very consistent at the top of the level.

3. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Yashasvi Jaiswal

With Virat Kohli not available and Rishabh Pant rested, India need someone at No. 3. That’s where we might see Shubman Gill taking more responsibility and coming to bat at No. 3. He can give the chance to Ruturaj Gaikwad and Yashasvi Jaiswal at the top. It will be another good opening combination because both are different kinds of players. Gaikwad can play at a good rate, while Jaiswal can take on the bowling.
