With the semi-final places up for grabs, the stakes were high as England and the USA walked into this fixture. However, brushing the pressure aside, the Englishmen unleashed their best as they concluded the contest.

The charge was led by English bowlers, especially Adil Rashid, who controlled the innings fantastically in the middle overs with his two wickets. Chris Jordan in the end, capped off USA’s innings at a meagre 115 runs with his sensational four-wicket over, which also saw a hat-trick.

The USA could manage a scanty 115 runs before they got dismissed. NR Kumar’s contribution of 30 runs in 24 deliveries turned out to be the biggest contribution followed by a 29-run innings by all-rounder Corey Anderson. Harmeet Singh scored 21 runs as USA set a 115-run total for England to conquer.

As they say – captain leading from the front – England skipper Jos Buttler started off the innings with his flamboyant strokeplay and continued the assault till the job was fully done. He along with his opening partner Phil Salt chased 115 runs total in just 9.4 overs and bagged the crucial win for the team.

Buttler remained unbeaten at a blistering score of 83 runs in just 38 deliveries, which included 7 sixes and 6 fours. Phil Salt played the second fiddle as he closed his knock at an unbeaten 25 runs from 21 deliveries.

Explained: Why is India the most favourite to win T20 World Cup 2024? Here’s what it means to the cricket world

The ICC T20 World Cup 2024 is moving towards its business end, and there are only a few games left in the tournament. Team India have been phenomenal, and they have certainly carried on the tag of the favourites to win the title. The Men in Blue entered the tournament as one of the top contenders, and they have played like one. India are one of the two teams that have lost a single game in the tournament.

They have also won both Super 8 matches comprehensively and are on the verge of qualifying for the semi-final. India have certainly changed their tactics in this T20 World Cup 2024 and have gone with a more balanced squad. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are opening together for the first time in the ICC events, and then the team are going with four problem all-rounders in the team to get more balance in both departments. That has made them the team to beat in this tournament.

Why Team India have the best chance to win the T20 World Cup 2024?

Explained: Why is India the most favourite to win T20 World Cup 2024?
Explained: Why is India the most favourite to win T20 World Cup 2024?

The Men in Blue are in desperate need of an ICC title. They came very close in their last two attempts but ended up bottling up in the pressure situation. India won the last ICC title in 2013, when MS Dhoni led them to the Champions Trophy win. But since then, this team has struggled in knockouts.

They lost the finals of the ODI World Cup 2023 and the World Test Championship against Australia in the last 12–14 months. But this tournament will be a great chance for India to win. Firstly, it looks like the management has figured out the reason for India’s failure in knockouts. That’s why the Indians are going with a long batting line-up until No. 8.

It is because the Indian top order has failed in knockout, and the middle order has also struggled under pressure. But now, India have a number of proven batters like Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant, and Axar Patel who can take the pressure away. Secondly, India have given them more chances to go with three spinners in the team.

The conditions in West Indies are best suited for spinners, and that’s where India can take down the opposition. Adding to that, both Virat and Rohit are looking to play freely without thinking about wickets; that approach is well needed to win the tournament. So it won’t be a surprise if India go on to win the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

If it happens, it will certainly change many things for India and the cricket world. It will definitely bring back confidence into other Asian teams as well. Notably, the last time Asian teams won an ICC event was in 2017, when Pakistan won the Champions Trophy.

Here’s how India can still be disqualified from T20 World Cup 2024 semi-final race despite having 4 points

T20 World Cup 2024: Afghanistan beat Australia by 21 runs in match no. 48 of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 on Saturday at Arnos Vale Ground in Kingstown. Before this game, India thrashed Bangladesh in match no. 47 by 50 runs to get two more points on the table. The Indian team are at the top of the points table with four points now. They are almost through the semi-final.

India have four points and a NRR of +2.425. Meanwhile, Afghanistan and Australia have two points each. Two games are pending in Group 1, India are almost through, and either Afghanistan or Australia will make it to the semi-finals. But despite having four points on the board, India have still not confirmed a place in the semi-final. So, can India be knocked out? Well, mathematically, it is possible.

T20 World Cup 2024: Team India need to beat Australia to qualify for semi-final

India are almost certain of making it to the semi-final. They will play their last Super 8 game on Monday against Australia at the Darren Sammy National Cricket Stadium. That will be an important match for both teams. If India win this game, they will finish at the top of the table and make it through the semis of the T20 World Cup 2024.

But if they lose, there will be a slim chance of elimination. India’s elimination depends on a few results. Let’s suppose India lose their last game against Australia. Then they will end up with four points. And Australia will also have four points. On the other hand, if Afghanistan win their last game against Bangladesh, they will get two more points.

Then, there will be three teams with four points each on the board. Then, the NRR will come into play. Now the chances of India eliminating are very low. But if Australia beat India by a big margin, it will also decrease the NRR of the Indian team. On the other hand, Australia’s NRR will improve.

Then, if Afghanistan register a big win over Bangladesh, then their NRR will also improve. It will leave the Indian team with the worst NRR among the three teams, and they will be eliminated. Well, it might be impossible from here on, but this T20 World Cup 2024 has been a tournament of unexpected things. And we can’t write off any results.

“No better team to…” After the loss against Afghanistan, Australia captain Mitchell Marsh issues a warning to India

Australia captain Mitchell Marsh has issued a strong warning to the India team ahead of the game between the teams in the T20 World 2024. The match between the teams will be played in Guyana on Monday (24th June) and it will be a knockout game for Australia.

The 2021 T20 World Cup champions have put themselves in a spot of bother in the ongoing tournament. Australia faced a disappointing 21-run loss against Afghanistan and it has hampered their chances of qualifying for the semi-final stage of the tournament.

Had they won the game against Afghanistan, the road would’ve been quite easy for them. But the loss against Afghanistan means they are on the verge of elimination. If they lose the game against India then it would be almost curtains for them.

But even after the loss against Afghanistan, Australia are optimistic about winning against India. Captain Mitchell Marsh sent a strong message to the Indian team. He admitted that they got outplayed by Afghanistan but they need to win their next and there’s no better team to do it against. He stated:

“They probably got 20 too many. A lot of teams have bowled first in this tournament. Don’t think it was won or lost at the toss. We had an off night on the field.

“Wasn’t the easiest of wickets but both teams played on it. As I said, we got outplayed today. We just need to win and there’s no better team to do it against.”

If Australia went on the lose the game against India and then Afghanistan beat Bangladesh, the Mitchell Marsh-led side will out of the T20 World Cup 2024. But a win in the game against India will keep them in contention and they would be hoping Bangladesh to beat Afghanistan.

Afghanistan vs Australia Match Review

Kangaroo captain Mitchell Marsh won the toss and invited Afghanistan to bat first. Batting first, Afghanistan scored 148 runs at the loss of six wickets in 20 overs. Opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran kept the target in check from the team’s side, Gurbaz scored 60 runs in 49 balls with the help of four fours and four sixes, while Zadran scored 51 runs in 48 balls.

After the dismissal of both openers, the team was seen struggling. Afghanistan lost their first wicket at 118 runs, and even after that, the team could score only 148 runs. In bowling from Australia’s side, ODI captain Pat Cummins took three wickets for 28 runs in four overs. Right-arm legbreak spinner Adam Zampa took two wickets while Stoinis took one wicket.

The performance of the Australian openers who came out to chase the target of 148 was not very good. Travis Head got out on 0, and David Warner got out on 3 runs. But then Glenn Maxwell came between the victories of Australia and Afghanistan. Maxwell not only handled the Australian innings but also hit big shots against the Afghan bowlers. He played an innings of 59 runs in just 41 balls with the help of six fours and three sixes.

Australia, one of the strong contenders for T20 World Cup 2024, was all-out in 19.2 overs against Afghanistan. If Australia had managed to defeat Afghanistan today, India and Australia would have qualified for the semi-finals. But now that the tournament is fully open, Afghanistan’s qualification hopes are still alive.

No Babar Azam, Pakistan’s New T20I Captain, Wasim Akram Predicts perfect candidate for Pakistan Captaincy after T20 World Cup 2024 early exit

Former Pakistani legendary pacer Wasim Akram has hit back at the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for being involved in too much politics after the Babar Azam-led side made an early exit from the T20 World Cup 2024. Akram took a shot at the PCB for creating an unnecessary controversy after they sacked Shaheen Shah Afridi from Pakistan’s T20I captaincy in the run-up to the World Cup 2024.

Notably, Shaheen Shah Afridi was appointed Pakistan’s T20I captain on November 2023, replacing Babar Azam, however, Moshin Naqvi, the new PCB chief reinstated Babar Azam to the leadership position weeks before the T20 World Cup 2024, sacking Shaheen Shah Afridi.

Akram, dejected with Pakistan’s dismal show at the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024, criticised the PCB and cited frequent changes in the top positions as one of the key reasons for Pakistan’s inconsistent performances.

“Three chairmen [PCB] changed in one year. Ramiz Raja was removed, and Najam Sethi came for three months. Sethi left, and Zaka Ashraf came. After four or five months, Mohsin Naqvi came. How would the team stay consistent?” Wasim Akram questioned during a conversation with Sportskeeda.

The legendary pacer felt relieved not being involved with the PCB and said, it’s a “blessing in disguise.”

“They don’t take our suggestions, and it’s great that I am away from Pakistan cricket. It’s a ‘blessing in disguise’ because it is just criticism, politics,” he added.

Shaheen Shah Afridi led Pakistan in a solitary T20I series against New Zealand, resulting in a 4-1 loss to Pakistan. Following the series, Afridi was sacked as the T20I captain and Babar Azam was reinstated.

“Babar Azam was removed from captaincy, Shaheen was appointed. He lost one series, and the chairman was also changed in the same period; therefore, they changed the skipper. This is just not on; people make fun of us in world cricket,” he said.

Shaheen Shah Afridi should be given a long rope: Akram

No Babar Azam, Pakistan's New T20I Captain, Wasim Akram Predicts perfect candidate for Pakistan Captaincy after T20 World Cup 2024 early exit
Shaheen Afridi (image source – BCCI Twitter)

Wasim Akram emphasises keeping stability in the leadership position. He advocated giving at least a year-long run to Shaheen Shah Afridi at the top to see if he is a worthy candidate for leadership or not.

“He’s a wicket-taking bowler. He goes for wickets. He attacks with the new ball in the T20 format. Everyone knows that he’ll pitch it up, but he still gets them out, and that’s what I love about him,” he said.

“At least give Shaheen a year to lead, and then he could be changed, but I don’t know. He’s an aggressive cricketer, only 23 or 24 years old, maybe younger. Got a bright future ahead. He’ll get the captaincy again but should focus on his game until he doesn’t get it,” he concluded.

After the first group round, Pakistan was eliminated from the T20 World Cup 2024. The Babar Azam-led side faced humiliation at the hands of USA before Rohit Sharma’s Team India dominated them in New York.

T20 World Cup 2024: Semi-Finals Qualification Scenario for all Super 8 Group 2 teams

T20 World Cup 2024: The ICC T20 World Cup 2024 has reached its exciting Super 8 phase, and all the remaining eight teams divided in two groups of four teams each are fighting it our fiercely against each other to secure their qualification for the semi-finals of the tournament.

While the Super Right’s Group 1 has been dominated by India and Australia, Group 2 has seen the West Indies and South Africa dominate the proceedings. But, the qualification spots have not been sealed yet, and all four participating Group 2 teams are still alive in the race to qualifying for the semi-finals of the ongoing 2024 T20 World Cup.

South Africa defeated England by seven runs in a thrilling encounter yesterday at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground in Saint Lucia, and they are sitting at the top of Group 2 with four points in two matches.

Co-hosts West Indies, on the other hand, won against fellow-hosts the United States of America by a comfortable margin of nine wickets on Sunday, June 22, and have occupied the second position in the table with two points in two games.

England’s defeat against the Proteas means they are ranked third in the overall standings and have the same number of points as the Windies, but their net run rate of +0.412 is less than the +1.814 of the Rovman Powell-led team.

The USA will play their final Super Eight encounter against the Jos Buttler-led team while the Windies will lock horns against the highly confident South Africa om 23rd June, Sunday to close-out the group two games of the Super Eight.

Ahead of the remaining Group two Super eight games, let’s take a look at each team’s qualification scenario for the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2024:

Semi-Finals Qualification Scenario for all super 8 group 2 teams:

1. South Africa (Four points in two-games)

South Africa under the leadership of Aiden Markram are currently sitting at the top of Super eight Group two. With two back to back wins in their last two encounters , the Proteas will be looking to secure a hat-trick of Super eight victories by defeating Rovman Powell’s West Indies in their final game to easily secure qualification for the semi-finals.

However, if things go South for the Aiden Markram-led team and the Windies defeat them, then they will have to hope England lose against the USA or don’t defeat them by a huge margin so that their Net Run Rate of +0.412 dosen’t go past South Africa’s Net Run Rate of +0.625.

2. West Indies (Two points in two games)

Co-hosts West Indies are ranked second in Group two of the Super eight. With just a single win in two encounters, the Rovman Powell-led team will have to defeat the Proteas at all costs in their upcoming Super eight fixture. If the Proteas get the better of the Carribbean team, then Rovman Powell and his men will have to rely on fellow co-hosts United States of America defeating 2022 champions England in order to secure their qualification for the Semi-finals of the tournament.

3. England (Two points in two games)

Jos Buttler-led England will have to defeat the United States of America with a huge-margin at all costs if they want to ensure their swift qualification to the semi-finals of the tournament. West Indies have a much better Net Run Rate of +1.814 in comparison to England’s +0.412. So the Three Lions would want the South Africans to win against the Windies in the other game so that the Net Run Rate dosen’t come into play.

4. United States of America (Zero points in two games)

Co-hosts United States of America are sitting at the bottom of Group two. They have failed to replicate their group stage form in the Super eight and are currently winless in two matches. Many feel they won’t be able to qualify for the Semis but they have a small chance to qualify if South Africa beats West Indies and the Aaron Jones-led team defeat 2022 champions England by a huge margin.

What a day it has been for Team India in the business as they seal another crucial win in the T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8. After being put to bat first by Bangladesh, Rohit Sharma and his boys notched up 196 runs in the first innings at the loss of 5 wickets.

India rode on the back of strong performances from all-rounder Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant and Shivam Dube after a couple of handy knocks from the openers.

Skipper Rohit Sharma (23 off 11) provided a quick start, though, he couldn’t convert his start into big innings. Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant paired for the second wicket and added 32 runs before Kohli fell after a well-made 37 runs off 28 deliveries.

Tanzim Hasan Shakib removed Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav in the same over in a span of 3 deliveries to bring Bangladesh back into the contest. Rishabh Pant and Shivam Dube continued following the two quick wickets and added another 23 runs before Pant fell.

The innings was then carried forward by Shivam Dube and all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who gave a strong finishing touch to the innings. While Dube scored 34 runs off 24 deliveries, Hardik remained unbeaten at 50 runs in 27 deliveries as he aided Team India to post a massive 196 runs in 20 overs.

Bangladesh needed a strong start to counter India’s big total at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua, which they got to some extent. The openers added 35 runs before the fall of the first wicket in 4.3 overs. Following a decent opening punch, Bangladesh kept slipping with wickets consistently.

Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto remained the sole player who played a good 40-run knock, but his sole performance was not enough to take Bangladesh over the rope against Team India.

Indian bowlers kept dealing in wickets and eventually restricted Bangladesh to a score of 146 runs in 20 overs. Mystery spinner Kuldeep Yadav scalped three wickets, while Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh got two apiece in their bags and Hardik Pandya got one for himself too.

At the end of the 20 overs, Bangladesh fell 50 runs short of the 196-run target set by India and lost the fixture.

The Men in Blue with two wins on the trot in the Super 8 has put its one foot on the semi-finals. Unless something goes drastically wrong for the team, no one can come between India and its semi-final berth.
