India might agree to travel to Lahore for the Champions Trophy 2025: report

Pakistan’s Cricket Governing Body, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has received some positive-hints about the Indian Cricket team agreeing to visit Pakistan for ICC’s Champions Trophy 2025 event, the sources told Geo-News.

According to some news reports, the International Cricket Council (ICC) will share the schedule of the Champions Trophy with the other participating Cricket Boards in the final week of June.

The PCB had previously sent the Champions Trophy schedule with the ICC few-weeks ago and the Cricketing Governing-Body decided not to make any changes in the PCB’s schedule after reviewing it carefully and thoroughly.

The 2025 Champions Trophy, hosted by 2017 winners Pakistan, will include the likes of India, England and Australia. Bangladesh, New Zealand, Afghanistan and South Africa will also participate in next year’s mega event.

The final of the tournament and the matches of the Indian Cricket Team will be held in the city of Lahore. Currently, the BCCI have not given an official statement regarding them not agreeing to send the Indian Cricket Team to Pakistan.

Except the Indians, the remaining seven teams have played matches in Pakistan and they are very keen on playing the Champions Trophy in Pakistan as well. If the other participating nations agree to travel to Pakistan for next year’s mega event, then the Men in Blue’s last minute refusal to not travel to their neighbouring country will be really difficult to get accepted.

According to the PCB’s tentative schedule, the matches of the upcoming tournament will be played in the cities of Lahore, Karachi and Rawalpindi between 19th February to 9th March.
The city of Lahore will play host to seven games, including the all-important final.

The opening match of the tournament will be played in the National Stadium of Karachi while one semi-final will be played at the same venue as well. In short, three matches will be played in Karachi. The city of Rawalpindi will play host to five encounters, including the other semi-final.

Notably , next year’s Champions Trophy will mark the return of the tournament after an absence of eight long years. The previous edition of the 50-over tournament was played in 2017 where Pakistan ended up lifting the trophy by defeating the Virat Kohli-led team in the final.

England started the Super 8 stage of the tournament on a high. They thumped West Indies in their opening game and boosted their NRR. But after that a loss against South Africa has put them in a spot of bother and their qualification for the semi-final looks bleak now. 

South Africa registered their second consecutive win in the Super 8 stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024. They defeated England by seven runs at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in Gros Islet, St Lucia in a Group 2 encounter.

For England to qualify they need to beat the United States of America by a comprehensive margin. If they scored 160 runs while batting first then they need to make sure that they beat the opposition by 10 runs. And if they are chasing, they need to win by at least an over to spare.

Wicketkeeper batsman Nicholas Pooran also led the team to victory by scoring 27 runs in just 12 balls with a strike rate of 225.

With this big margin of victory, West Indies’ chances of Super-4 qualification have increased, as West Indies has the best run rate among the four teams in the entire group. West Indies’ next match is against South Africa on which WI’s qualification will depend. Africa has not lost a single match in the tournament so far.

As per the reports, Pakistan and Bangladesh are set to engage in a two-game Test series in Pakistan. The series is expected to be played in August 2024 in Rawalpindi and Multan. The two-match PAK vs BAN test will be a part of the ICC World Test Championship 2023-25 cycle.

Notably, the most prominent stadiums in Pakistan are undergoing an upgrade to host the prestigious ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which shrinks the overall stadium base for PCB to pick to host the PAK vs BAN test series.

South Africa were put to bat first at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in St Lucia by the English skipper Jos Buttler after winning the flip of the coin. The Proteas managed to put up 163 runs on the board in the loss of 6 wickets in their quota of 20 overs.

Reeza Hendricks and Quinton de Kock provided a blazing start to the innings with a partnership of 86 runs inside 10 overs. De Kock remained the key figure in the partnership as he scored 65 runs in 38 deliveries which included 4 fours and as many sixes. England, meanwhile, couldn’t get a good start to their innings with Phil Salt getting dismissed in the powerplay itself. Soon, Jonny Bairstow and Jos Buttler were also removed by Keshav Maharaj to further put pressure on the Englishmen.

England began losing wickets and they were suddenly four wickets down at a score of 61 runs in 10 overs. However, Harry Brook and Liam Livingstone came to England’s rescue as the two played a 78-run partnership.

As the partnership began to look threatening, seasoned pacer Kagiso Rabada provided a breakthrough, dismissing Livingstone (33 off 17) while Anrich Nortje removed Harry Brook (53 off 37).

Though England managed to streatch the game till the final over, destiny had some other plans as they eventually fell 7 runs short of the required total against South Africa. England could only score 156 runs in the chase of 163 and lost the contest by 7 runs.

Bangladesh struggled to post a good total and managed 140/8 in the first inning. The big names couldn’t do anything, but the captain played a good inning with 41 runs.

Australia were 100/2 in 11.2 overs when the rain came, and they were announced the winner by the DLS method.

In the post-match presentation, Shanto talked about the areas lacking and also spoke about the next game against India on Saturday.

He said, “It's very important for the top-order to get runs like we did today; that's a big boost, and hopefully the bowlers will continue their form. Looking for a good show against India in our next match.” Bangladesh will have an edge as they have already played the game at this venue, where they will face India.

Though India are strong favourite to win this game, Bangladesh have players who can turn things around and put India under pressure. This match will be important for Bangladesh, as they can’t afford a defeat here.
