Babar Azam likely to continue as Pakistan’s captain despite their below par performance

The Pakistani Men’s National Cricket Team delivered a below par performance in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 under the leadership of Babar Azam. The Shaheens lost their opening match against co-hosts USA and failed to secure an easy win against fierce rivals India before defeating Canada and Ireland in their third and fourth matches of the tournament respectively.

But after the defeats against USA and India, the damage had already been done and the victories against Canada and Ireland were not enough for the Green Shirts to secure qualification for the Super 8 and they got knocked out of the group stage phase of the 2024 T20 World Cup.

The Shaheens didn’t perform well in last year’s ODI World Cup in India as well and immediately after the conclusion of the tournament, Babar Azam was forced to resign as the white ball skipper.

Following his resignation, Shaheen Shah Afridi was appointed as the new white ball skipper of the Shaheens but under his leadership, Pakistan lost the away five match T20 International series against New Zealand by a margin of 4-1 and the PCB weren’t convinced with the leadership skills of Shaheen so they replaced him with Babar Azam ahead of the 2024 T20 World Cup.

But following Pakistan’s early elimination from the T20 World Cup 2024, many Cricketing experts want Babar to be relieved from his leadership duties. However, that seems very unlikely as many news reports are saying that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is likely to stick with Babar as the white ball skipper for the time being.

Under the captaincy of the 29 year old, the Green Shirts reached the semi finals of the 2021 T20 World Cup and finished as the runners up in the T20 World Cup 2022. But, despite going through several structural-changes, the silverware remained unattainable.

Following the defeat against India on 9th June at the Nassau Country International Cricket Stadium of New York, Mohsin Naqvi – chief of the PCB stated that Pakistan Cricket will be undergoing a Major Surgery. This statement was made after the increase in tensions within the Pakistani camp as the Babar Azam-led team suffered a shocking defeat at the hands of co-hosts USA, which is considered as one of the biggest upsets in the world of Cricket.

Naqvi also gave some hints in regards to the changes in captaincy but he didn’t mention what decision the PCB are planning to make and made a promise that consultations are taking place regarding the same.

“At one point of time, I thought that the Men’s team requires a minor surgery which can help them win games but now a major surgery is required in order to help Pakistan get back to winning ways. The defeat against the USA is unacceptable and disappointing and the way we lost to India is very shameful. We now need to start looking beyond certain players in the squad and some major changes will have to be made,” Mohsin Naqvi said after the defeat against India.

“The consultation process is going on and I feel that it’s not appropriate to discuss the captaincy matter further at this point of time,” Naqvi added.

T20 World Cup 2024: Babar Azam breaks this record of MS Dhoni

T20 World Cup 2024: Pakistan’s Men’s National Cricket Team skipper Babar Azam created a world record in his team’s final T20 World Cup 2024 Group A fixture against Ireland in Florida’s Lauderhill on Sunday as he surpassed former Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and became the player with the highest number of runs scored as a captain in the history of ICC T20 World Cups.

The 29 year old played an amazing unbeaten inning of 32 runs in 34 deliveries and this inning helped him go past Dhoni tally of 529 runs in the T20 World Cup’s history.

List of players who have scored the highest number of runs as a captain in T20 World Cups

1. Babar Azam – 549 runs in 17 innings

2. Mahendra Singh Dhoni – 529 runs in 29 innings

3. Kane Williamson – 527 runs in 19 innings

4. Mahela Jayawardene – 360 runs in 11 innings

5. Graeme Smith – 352 runs in 16 innings

It’s worth noting that Pakistan defeated Paul Stirling’s Ireland by a margin of three wickets in their final fixture of the 2024 T20 World Cup at Lauderhill’s Central Broward Regional Park Stadium on Sunday.

The low scoring thriller came to an end in the 19th over of the Pakistani inning as Shaheen Shah Afridi hit a maximum off the bowling of Gareth Delany and took his team over the line and helped the Shaheens end their below par T20 World Cup 2024 campaign on a positive note.

Chasing a target of 107 runs, the Green Shirts, despite getting off to a decent start with the bat, made things tough for themselves as they kept on losing – wickets at crucial intervals of the match. Both the openers, Mohammad Rizwan (17 runs in 16 balls) and Saim Ayub (17 runs in 17 balls) got dismissed in the first six overs of the Pakistani inning.

The middle order of the Babar Azam-led team failed to get going once again as the trio of Usman Khan (2 runs in 3 balls), Fakhar Zaman (5 runs in 9 balls), Imad Wasim (4 runs in 6 balls) and Shadab Khan (0 runs in 2 balls) got dismissed cheaply.

Bowling All-Rounder Abbas Afridi gave the Shaheens a much needed breakthrough as he smashed a huge six and a good looking four during his inning of 17 runs which helped his team get closer to chasing down the target of 107 runs.

Captain Babar Azam was the top scorer for the Green Shirts with his match winning inning of 32 runs while Shaheen Shah Afridi played a good supporting role with the bat as he scored 13 runs in five balls and also picked up three wickets for just 22 runs which helped him to become the man of the match as well.

Earlier in the game, a really dominating performance by the Pakistani bowling unit got the better of the entire Irish batting unit as the trio of Mohammad Amir, Imad Wasim and Shaheen Shah Afridi restricted the Paul Stirling-led team to a below par total of 106 runs.

PNG vs NZ Dream11 Prediction: Fantasy Cricket Team, Today’s Playing 11 and Pitch Report for ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, Match 39

PNG vs NZ Dream11 Prediction: Gutted New Zealand will take on Papua New Guinea in match 39 of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 at the Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad. The fixture (PNG vs NZ) will be held on June 17 at 10:30 AM Local Time (8:00 PM IST).

Kane Williamson-led New Zealand crashed out of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 after failing to prove their worth in the first two matches of their Group. They lost against Afghanistan in the first fixture and then got a proper beating against West Indies by 13 runs in Trinidad.

They, however, managed to get a win against Uganda in the third game. Though it was an inconsequential game, somehow the Kiwis got hold of the situation and get a win. They will now look for another win against PNG to draw curtains to their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 campaign.

PNG, on the other hand, are on a three-game losing streak. They have lost fixtures to the West Indies, Uganda and Afghanistan respectively in Group C. With nothing to lose for them as well, they would hope to produce an upset against the Kiwis to close the World Cup campaign.

Brian Lara Stadium Pitch Report

So far it’s been challenging for the batters to be at par with the bowlers at this venue. The bowlers have enjoyed a lot of success. The fixtures have turned out to be low-scoring affairs more often than not so far in the tournament at the Brian Lara Stadium. Another low-scoring game is anticipated between New Zealand and Papua New Guinea. The weather remains unfavourable with heavy chances of rain during the match. There is a possibility of a washout as well.

Rain Threat looms over Super 8 Fixtures in T20 World Cup 2024 in the West Indies | Weather Forecast in Super 8

Weather Forecast in Super 8: Rain has become a major talking point in the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 after a string of matches resulted in a complete wash-out during the group stages. Three of the four matches scheduled in Florida were spoiled due to inclement weather, which also became a key reason for Pakistan’s elimination from the event.

So far, at the end of the group stages, rain has impacted five fixtures in the ongoing edition of the T20 World Cup with four of them being a complete wash-out.

Notably, there seems to be no respite in the unfavourable weather conditions as the tournament proceeds to the next round in the next few days. The weather forecast for the T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8 remains concerning with almost all matches having some chances of wash-out.

As many as 12 matches will be held in the Super 8 stage on the Caribbean island – Barbados, St Lucia, Antigua and St Vincent.

Interestingly, the final of the T20 World Cup 2024 will be staged at this venue, and it too has a 50 per cent chance of rain.

The forecast for the IND vs AUS clash on June 24 is also under the dark clouds as the forecast shows a 50 per cent chance of rain at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in St Lucia. The other two fixtures at this venue may get away.

The Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua has a rain forecast of 20-25 per cent in all the Super 8 fixtures. Notably, the England vs Namibia match at this venue saw a 4-hour delay before a 10-over per side game could be possible a few days ago.

Even the Arnos Vale Ground in Kingstown has a forecast of approximately 50 per cent rain in the two Super 8 matches held here.

T20 WC 2024: Gautam Gambhir to be announced as head coach of India on this date

0

In what has been the latest development as per the reports in Danik Jagron, Gautam Gambhir is all set to be announced as the head coach of the Indian team. The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) mentor will be replacing Rahul Dravid as coach of the team.

The reports claimed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will be releasing the official statement at the end of June 2024. They will be naming Gautam Gambhir as the head coach as Rahul Dravid’s tenure as the head coach will be after the T20 World Cup 2024.

Gautam Gambhir since the last year has been performing the mentor role in the Indian Premier League. He performed the role with Lucknow Super Giants for two years in the league before moving to Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL 2024.

Under the mentorship of Gautam Gambhir, Kolkata Knight Riders won third title in the league. The BCCI reportedly was impressed with the way, he has been performing the role and was keen to get him on board as the head coach of the team

Since the last few months, there have been a lot of reports circulating about the reports of Gautam Gambhir taking over the role. There were even reports that both BCCI and the Gambhir are on the same page and they share the same belief that they must do it for the nation.

Recently Gautam Gambhir also spoke about his desire to coach the Indian team. He said that he would love to take the role as it will be a huge honour for him. Talking during the event, he had said:

“I would love to coach the Indian team. There is no bigger honour than coaching your national team. You are representing 140 crore Indians and those across the globe as well. I have not answered this question, although a lot of people have asked me.

But I have to answer you now. It is 140 crore Indians who will help India win the World Cup. If everyone starts praying for us and we start playing and representing them, India will win the World Cup. The most important thing is to be fearless,” he concluded.

PAK vs IRE Dream11 Prediction, T20 World Cup 2024: Pakistan vs Ireland predicted playing XI, fantasy team, squads

PAK vs IRE Dream11 Prediction: Babar Azam-led Pakistan will face Paul Stirling-spearheaded Ireland in their last group stage fixture in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024. The fixture (PAK vs IRE) is set to be staged at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium in Florida on June 16, starting at 8:00 PM IST.

The early elimination has raised several questions inside Pakistan’s T20I setup. Given the stature and exposure of the team, they were expected to at least make it to the Super 8s of the T20 World Cup 2024, but that couldn’t happen, thanks to the awful performers in Pakistan.

With two losses already, especially one against the USA, Pakistan has already touched its low. It can’t get any lower than that anyhow even if they lose to Ireland in the impending fixture tonight. However, if Pakistan loses against Ireland, it may trigger the PCB chief for multiple stringent actions as indicated by the reports.

Ireland on the other hand would be hopeful to end their underwhelming T20 World Cup campaign with a win. So far the Paul Stirling-led side has been winless and a win against Pakistan would boost their confidence.

Ireland have earlier shocked Pakistan in the three-match T20I series and if they can produce another upset in the fixture tonight, they would feel a lot relieved.

Let’s take a look at the PAK vs IRE Dream11 Prediction, T20 World Cup 2024: Pakistan vs Ireland predicted playing XI, fantasy team, and squads.

PAK vs IRE ICC T20 World Cup 2024: Technically out of the tournament, Pakistan are set to lock horns against Ireland on 16th June at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground, Lauderhill, Florida, a stadium that. as per Pakistan fans, is ‘a weather-cursed stadium’.

For all intents and purposes, Pakistan’s match against Ireland, set for Sunday in Lauderhill, Florida, holds no significant impact. However, both teams, driven by pride, are keen to conclude the tournament on a positive note.

Ireland has historically posed real challenges to Pakistan, ensuring that the latter won’t take them for granted. Their recent three-match series saw Ireland surprising the visiting Pakistani side, providing valuable preparation for this tournament. However, in a twist of fate, both teams find their hopes dashed even before they clash again on the field.

Ireland haven’t won a game in the ICC Tournament in 2024. They first lost to India and then also lost to Canada and that was the point of their exit from the tournament. Pakistan, on the other hand, also lost the first two games against USA, and India almost marking their exit too.

This game doesn’t have any significant impact on the proceeding of the tournament and qualification but will have a big impact on the confidence of both teams.

However, the weather in Florida may have some other plans. Below is the PAK vs IRE weather forecast, Florida Weather report, Rain Prediction and Pitch report.

Babar Azam, Rizwan, Shaheen to face Salary Cuts | Salaries of Pakistan Cricketers

Salaries of Pakistan Cricketers: Pakistan’s early exit from the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 may lead to some drastic changes in Pakistan’s T20I setup, including a reassessment of the central contracts and a reduction in the salaries of players. The reports emerging following Pakistan’s elimination indicated frustrated PCB officials mulling a thorough review of the T20I setup.

Babar Azam-led Pakistan faced an early elimination from the T20 World Cup 2024 after they lost two games on the bounce to begin their run in Group A. The Men in Green lost to the USA in the Super Over before facing a drubbing against India in a low-scoring thriller on June 09.

Although they managed to bring their T20 World Cup 2024 campaign back on the winning track with the win over Canada, their fate was already decided with the two losses upfront. Pakistan’s elimination meant that it would be the USA, who would proceed to the next round of the tournament along with India from Group A.

The Pakistani fans and cricket experts were devastated by the fact that their side couldn’t make it to the Super 8s despite having the USA, Canada and Ireland in the group.

Meanwhile, some of the officials and former cricketers have advised the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to reassess the central contracts, which were awarded to the players when Zaka Ashraf was the PCB chief.

“There could be a reassessment of the central contracts and the players could find their salaries, and fees being cut if the Chairman decides to react strongly to the team’s recent woeful performances,” a reliable source told PTI.

Notably, the players were awarded central contracts for three years with a pay hike in 2023. The players falling under Category A were given a whopping 200 per cent salary hike while the others were given a 100 per cent hike in their salaries. Moreover, the match fee for the players saw a sizable hike.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) included Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan and Shaheen Shah Afridi in the top contract which relates to $15,500 per month. Category B players get $10,000 per month while Category C and D get $6,000 and $1,700 per month respectively.
