IPL 2021: BCCI considering one additional franchise for the upcoming IPL. 2021
Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021: The 13th edition of the cash-rich league saw its wrap couple of month back. However, the preparations of the 14th editions had started ever since the IPL 2020 saw its title winner.
The T20 format league has seen a huge growth in its value and success year by year after its inception in 2018. Usually, the IPL is scheduled with eight franchises but after the delayed season of IPL in 2020, the BCCI looked keen on adding few more into the existing pool of 8 franchise.
The tender for the new franchise will be given in March 2021 and the teams will be included in 2022 edition of IPL. The franchise will be expecting a mega-auctions before the IPL 2022. However, according to the recent reports, BCCI is contemplating adding at least one franchise in the IPL 2021.
The expansion of the most luxurious T20 League was officially given a green signal in the BCCI Annual General Meeting held on 24th December. With the Meeting, few key points were discussed as reported by The Times of India.
Key points from the BCCI AGM:
- A team for now and another later, keeping in mind the prevailing market condition, as going at once could limit the franchise’s potential value.
- Adding second-team right after the first will impact the IPL usual window. The number of matches will increase which in return will impact the already scheduled international cricket.
- Adding a second team will need some changes in the format of the league. The current IPL window will be shorter to conduct all the games and hence a new format have to be inducted or the BCCI will have to increase the IPL window. The current IPL window is 2 months.
“Everyone in the industry said that it is a well-thought move by the BCCI. This will clearly benefit the BCCI in the short run or even in the long run and it doesn’t really disturb the ecosystem,” said the executives from the industry.
