IPL 2022 Points Table, Orange Cap, Purple Cap – Updated on May 17

IPL 2022 Points Table, Orange Cap, Purple Cap: Rishabh Pant-led Delhi Capitals (DC) and Mayank Aggarwal’s Punjab Kings (PBKS) crossed swords in match number 64 of the Tata Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 in which Delhi registered a crucial 17-runs victory at the DY Patil Stadium.

Punjab Kings won the toss and decided to invite Delhi Capitals to bat first and set the total. Opener David Warner was dismissed early on to provide a good start, however, the situation was brought under control by makeshift opener Sarfaraz Khan and Mitchell Marsh.

Khan scored 16-ball 32 while Mitchell Marsh once again anchored the innings with his 63 runs. Middle-order batter Lalit Yadav assisted with his 24 runs. Punjab bowlers didn’t let Delhi batters free their arms and a tight death bowling helped Punjab restrict Delhi to a total of 159 in 20 overs.

Punjab was off to a solid start in pursuit of an average total, however, wickets began to tumble once the openers were sent back. Wicketkeeper batter Jitesh Sharma offered some resistance and kept Punjab’s hopes alive with his 44 runs from 34 balls, however, in the end, it was Delhi who registered a vital win over Punjab.

Delhi Capitals (DC) defeated Punjab Kings (PBKS) by 17 runs to bag crucial two rating points.

With the win, Delhi jumped over Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) to acquire fourth place in the IPL 2022 points table. Delhi and RCB, both have 14 points in 13 matches but a superior net run rate puts the former ahead of the latter.

Rishabh Pant and Co are very much in contention to get the top four finish following their two consecutive victories in the most important phase. If Delhi manages to win its remaining match, it will further boost their chances for the playoffs.

On the other side, Punjab’s loss has dented its playoff hopes. With just six wins from 13 matches, Punjab now can only finish as high as 14 points. Their playoff chances will highly depend on their last fixture along with some mathematical calculations.
