IPL 2023 Orange Cap, Purple Cap: Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT) advanced to their second consecutive IPL final as they hammered Mumbai Indians (MI) in qualifier 2 by 62 runs. The fixture between GT and MI was held at Narendra Modi Stadium and it turned out to be a high-scoring one.

After a brief delay due to rain, the match proceedings started with GT batting first. The home side mustered a massive 233 runs total in 20 overs with opener Shubman Gill tonking his third century of the season.

The GT openers scored 54 runs before the dismissal of Wriddhiman Saha. Gill then joined forces with Sai Sudharsan and added 188 runs to the team’s total. Interestingly, Gill was dropped on 30 by Tim David and he made Mumbai Indians pay heavily for the drop catch.

In the end, Hardik Pandya too played a quickfire innings of 28 runs in 13 deliveries to take GT’s total to a record 233 in 20 overs.

By the time MI came to bat, they had already suffered a blow after their wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan got injured. Ishan didn’t come to bat and Vishnu Vinod was drafted into the side as a concussion substitute. To add salt to the wounds, Cameron Green was also struck on his forearm and he too looked in discomfort.

MI lost both their openers pretty cheaply to Mohammad Shami. Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Verma steadied the innings for some time, however, Verma was bowled by Rashid Khan in the final over of the powerplay.

Suryakumar Yadav held his nerves and scored magnificent 61 runs in 38 deliveries, but he too perished playing the lap shot against Mohit Sharma. With the wicket of Suryakumar Yadav, MI’s all hopes were buried and it looked like a cakewalk for Gujarat to enter the final.

MI were bundled out at a score of 171 runs in 18.2 overs and GT subsequently entered the final of the Tata IPL 2023, where they will meet Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on 28th May.
