IPL 2023 Points Table, Orange Cap, Purple Cap: Rohit Sharma’s Mumbai Indians (MI) defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the Wankhede Stadium on 9th May to bring up their sixth victory of the season. Following the win, MI went past the mid-table mess and comfortably sits in the third position.
MI was posted a total of 200 runs by RCB in 20 overs, which to the normal eye seems pretty defendable. However, what unfolded as MI went about its business was nothing short of entertainment and domination.
Mumbai started off the chase with Ishan Kishan blowing away RCB’s powerplay bowling. Kishan singlehandedly took MI’s score over 50 runs in 5 overs before getting dismissed. Skipper Rohit Sharma once again struggled to get going and lost his wicket inside the powerplay.
Following Rohit’s wicket, Suryakumar Yadav was joined by Nehal Wadhera, who stitched a 142-run partnership and sealed the game for the home team. While Suryakumar Yadav took some time to gain fluency, Nehal Wadhera struck the early blows. The two batters blew away RCB’s bowling unit and in a jiffy, they threatened the 200-run score. Suryakumar Yadav smashed 83 runs from 35 deliveries, while Nehal Wadhera remained unbeaten, scoring 52 from 34 balls.
Earlier in the game, MI won the toss and invited RCB to bat first. Unlike the rest of the season, Virat Kohli was dismissed in the first over of the innings itself by Jason Behrendorff. Soon Anuj Rawat was also sent back to the dugout.
However, Glenn Maxwell and Faf du Plessis added quick 120 runs to post a 200-run total for Mumbai Indians. Faf scored 65 runs while Glenn Maxwell contributed 68 runs in 33 deliveries.
