IPL 2023 Points Table, Orange Cap, Purple Cap: It was a perfect weekend for cricket fans with the doubleheader clash between Mumbai Indians-Kolkata Knight Riders and Gujarat Titans-Rajasthan Royals. While Rohit Sharma’s MI got better off KKR in the afternoon game, RR managed to defeat GT at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
In the first fixture of the day, KKR posted a total of 185 runs in 20 overs. Southpaw Venkatesh Iyer remained the stand-out performer for KKR as he slammed his maiden century in the IPL. Besides Iyer, no other batter looked comfortable against Mumbai’s bowling.
MI began their chase of a modest total at a brisk pace. Impact Substitute Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan eked out 16 runs off Shardul’s first over, 17 off Umesh’s second over and then 22 off Narine’s first over. It was a perfect playoff for Mumbai, who took the game away from the opposition in the first six overs itself. Eventually, MI completed the chase of 185 runs with 2.2 overs to spare and gained two crucial points.
In the second game of the night, Hardik Pandya’s Gujarat Titans scored 177 runs in 20 overs. Young opener Shubman Gill and David Miller remained the top scorers of the innings with 45 and 46 runs respectively.
In pursuit of 177 runs, RR couldn’t get a decent opening partnership. Rajasthan were two down at a score of 4 runs. However, things were brought in control by skipper Sanju Samson and Devdutt Padikkal. To end the chase, Shimron Hetmyer showed his power-hitting masterclass to score 56 runs in just 26 balls and took RR over the rope.
