IPL 2023 Points Table, Orange Cap, Purple Cap: Once again Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) pulled off a final ball thriller at the Eden Gardens, courtesy Rinku Singh, against Punjab Kings (PBKS). KKR defeated PBKS by five wickets and kept themselves alive in the IPL 2023 playoff race.
It was an ordinary day for Punjab Kings (PBKS) in business. They are known to be a batting-heavy side, however, scenes were completely opposite as they face KKR at Eden Gardens. The opening combination couldn’t provide a decent start to the innings, and then Bhanuka Rajapaksha was dismissed for a duck. Liam Livingstone couldn’t do any better, and neither do Sam Curran.
Skipper Shikhar Dhawan top scored with a fine half-century, but there will be fingers on his strike rate. In the end, Shahrukh Khan, Rishi Dhawan and Harpreet Brar did a bit of quick scoring, which helped PBKS to post a below-par 179 runs total at Eden Gardens.
The response from KKR wasn’t dominating either. KKR wanted some explosive start, but Nathan Ellis and Rishi Dhawan kept things under control with their tight lines. At some point, Jason Roy started to look threatening, however, he was removed by Harpreet Brar.
KKR skipper Nitish Rana scored a half-century and was eventually dismissed as he tried to pace up his scratchy innings. Andre Russell showed brilliant presence on a difficult track which was aiding the spinners. Russell scored a healthy 42 runs in just 23 balls to help his side get closer to the total.
Russell and Rinku Singh did well to not let the asking run rate climb too high with their shot play. The duo stitched 54 run partnership in almost half the deliveries. In the end, KKR required seven runs in the final over and Rinku Singh had his plans sorted out.
Although Arshdeep Singh did well to take the game deep, Rinku Singh scored a boundary in the last delivery and took his side home with 5 wickets remaining.
