IPL 2023 Points Table, Orange Cap, Purple Cap: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) extended its purple run in the MA Chidambaram Stadium as they defeated Delhi Capitals (DC) by 27 runs in match 55 of the Tata Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. Along with this win, CSK consolidated its second place in the IPL 2023 Points Table.
After all the initial bursts of the belter surface, Chepauk showed its true colours as he headed out to see CSK vs DC clash on 10th May. The pitch remained slow and tricky throughout the game and in fact, it deteriorated in the second half of the fixture.
MS Dhoni had won the toss and opted to bat first. Unlike the previous games, CSK couldn’t get a long opening stand. Interestingly, six batters got the start in their innings, but none of them could take it longer and deeper, thanks to the surface. Owing to the contributions of all players, CSK managed to post 167 runs score in the loss of eight wickets in 20 overs.
Shivam Dube was the top scorer with a 12-ball-25 run knock followed by Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ajinkya Rahane, Ambati Rayudu, MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja, who all scored at least 20 runs in the innings.
In pursuit of 167 runs total, Delhi got off to a horrifying start. Skipper David Warner was dismissed in the first over itself, Phil Salt could not last longer than 3 overs and then Mitchell Marsh became the victim of a mixup and was run out. DC had lost its three crucial wickets in the powerplay itself and was under immense pressure.
Manish Pandey and Rilee Rossouw showed resistance and stitched a 59-run partnership between them, but it came run-a-ball. Eventually, Manish Pandey was dismissed by Matheesh Pathirana and then it looked like a mere formality for CSK to complete the overs.
Axar Patel tried to take his side closer to the target, but he too succumbed to the CSK bowlers. In the end, DC could only score 140 runs in 20 overs and lost the game by 27 runs.

CSK strengthened its second place in the IPL 2023 Points Table with 15 rating points from 12 matches. Chennai is likely to qualify for the IPL 2023 playoffs along with Gujarat Titans, who are placed atop the IPL 2023 Points Table with 16 rating points.
Meanwhile, Delhi’s chances of the IPL 2023 playoff have gone down. They could only reach to 14 points even if they win all their remaining games, which won’t be sufficient to enter the top 4. Hence, their fate is no longer in their hands.
IPL 2023 Orange Cap
DC skipper David Warner extended his pale patch in the IPL 2023 with a duck against Chennai Super Kings. Hence, no improvements were seen in his IPL 2023 Orange Cap rankings. In the last five games, Warner has scored 43 runs along with two ducks.
Faf du Plessis is leading the IPL 2023 Orange Cap leaderboard with 576 runs in 11 matches. He is followed by Yashasvi Jaiswal with 477 runs under his belt and Shubman Gill respectively.
IPL 2023 Purple Cap
CSK’s young pacer Tushar Deshpande couldn’t add wickets to his name against Delhi Capitals and hence, he failed to go past the Gujarat duet of Mohammad Shami and Rashid Khan in the IPL 2023 Purple Cap leaderboard.
Deshpande is placed third in the list with 19 wickets, while Mohammad Shami and Rashid Khan are placed in first and second position respectively with as many wickets as Tushar Deshpande’s but with a slightly better economy.
