IPL 2024 Updated Points Table: In what promised to be a really exciting and fascinating encounter, Shubman Gill led Gujarat Titans took on Shikhar Dhawan’s Punjabi Munde of Punjab Kings in match number 17 of the Tata Indian Premier League 2024. This was the second home game of the IPL 2022 winners and they failed to defend a total of 199 runs as the the IPL 2024 runners up Punjab Kings defeated GT by three wickets.
Shikhar Dhawan asked the Gujarat Titans to bat first and Gujarat took full advantage of the batting conditions on offer as the opening duo of Wriddhiman Saha (11 runs 13 balls) and Shubman Gill (89 runs in 48 balls) started things off nicely for GT. Saha though didn’t look comfortable in the middle and started very slowly and in the process of accelerating his inning, he lost his wicket to Kagiso Rabada. Gill though on the other end showed his class as he scored a flurry of boundaries in the first six overs of the match.
Gill stitched some useful partnerships with the likes of Kane Williamson and Sai Sudharsan. Williamson (26 runs in 22 balls) played a decent knock for someone who came out to bat in the IPL after one year. Sai Sudharsan (33 runs in 19 balls) played an aggressive inning of 30+ runs but he was sent back to the pavilion by the short pitched delivery of Harshal Patel.
Skipper Shubman Gill continued his assault from one end but he didn’t receive any kind of support from the other end as Vijay Shankar (8 runs in 10 balls) fell prey to the fabulous bowling of Rabada.
Much to the delight of the Ahmedabad crowd, out came Rahul Tewatia to the crease and played a couple of good shots which helped to ease the pressure of Shubman on the other end. The two helped the home side put a challenging total of 199 runs on the board in their quota of 20 overs.
The Punjab Bowlers didn’t have a good night with the ball and gave way too many runs against the GT batting unit. Kagiso Rabada (2-44) was the best bowler for PBKW while Harpreet Brar (1-33) and Harshal Patel (1-44) took one wicket each.
Talking about the batting inning of PBKS, they didn’t have a good start as skipper Shikhar Dhawan (1 run in 2 balls) got cleaned up by the experienced Shikhar Dhawan on the very first ball of his first over. But, the duo of Jonny Bairstow (22 runs in 13 balls) and Prabhsimran Singh (35 runs in 24 balls) stabilized things for the Punjab based side with their partnership of 35 runs in 24 balls for the third wicket. However, Chinaman bowler Noor Ahmed spoiled the party of Punjab as he cleaned up Bairstow with a peach of a delivery.
Sam Curran (5 runs in 8 balls) came out to bat at number four but failed to live up to the expectations of the fans as he got dismissed by some superb piece of bowling by Omarzai.
Sikandar Raza, playing his first game of the season didn’t get going and was able to score just 15 runs in 16 balls and eventually he gave away his wicket to IPL 2024 Purple Cap holder Mohit Sharma.
Jitesh Sharma (16 runs in 8 balls) and Shashank Singh (61 runs in 29 balls) stabilized things for the Kings as they stitched a partnership of 39 runs in 19 balls for the sixth wicket. This partnership helped the visitors to stay in the game. The mighty Rashid Khan had some other plans as he sent Jitesh Back to the pavilion.
