MI gave a fitting reply to SRH by defeating them by 7 wickets at their home ground. MI subsequently moves up in the IPL points table, besides damaging SRH’s playoff chances. More on the IPL Points Table later in the article.
MI vs SRH Summary
Not often do we see the ball doing a lot in a T20 match, and what’s even rare is batters shining despite the ball doing enough to trouble them. Mumbai’s Suryakumar Yadav owned the fixture as he slammed his second IPL ton and took his side over the rope with his nonchalant six over the deep extra cover in the 18th over.
The game was well in the grasp of SRH when they picked up three wickets in just 31 runs in powerplay. But when unleashed next in the game was not what anyone would have thought.
Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma sensibly stitched an unbeaten 143-run partnership to snatch the win from SRH. Despite the early jolts and the surface favouring the bowlers, the two MI batters kept scoring runs and single-handedly demolished the opposition.
While Tilak Varma played an unbeaten knock of 37 runs in 32 deliveries, Suryakumar Yadav showed his aggression and notched up 102 runs in 51 deliveries, which included 12 boundaries and 6 maximums.
Earlier, in the game, the batting-heavy SRH side was restricted to 173 runs in 20 overs by the MI bowlers. MI’s bowling brilliance kept SRH on the back foot, despite Travis Head’s 30-ball 48-run knock. In the end, Pat Cummins played a handy cameo of 35 runs in just 17 deliveries to take their total to 173 runs.
Mumbai Indians kept picking wickets in regular intervals and never let the opposition batters settle down in the middle.
The MI bowling attack was led by Piyush Chawla and Hardik Pandya, who scalped three wickets each. One wicket apiece went in favour of Jasprit Bumrah and Anshul Kamboj.
IPL Points Table (Updated) after MI vs SRH
While this win may not be of that much significance to the Mumbai Indians (MI), they have severely damaged SRH’s playoff chances. The game had the eyes of a couple of other IPL sides as well, who are competing for the IPL 2024 playoff spot. LSG and CSK will benefit from MI’s win against SRH at the Wankhede Stadium.
This was MI’s fourth win of the season after playing out 12 matches. The Hardik Pandya-led side is still in the hunt mathematically, although they are placed in the penultimate position in the IPL Points Table.
SRH has got a proper beating and this would hurt them as it has come at a crucial moment. However, they still have plenty of chances to make it to the IPL playoffs with three games left in their campaign. The Pat Cummins-spearheaded side is placed fourth in the IPL Points Table with 6 wins from 11 matches.
