The luxurious cricket board earned 4,000 crores in Revenue from the Indian Premier League held in UAE. The statement also says, 30,000 RT-PCR Covid Tests were conducted for 1,800 individuals. TV viewership raised to 25 percent more than last year’s IPL.
According to the BCCI Treasurer Arun Dhumal, the report card of cash-rich IPL is finally out. The thirteenth edition of the Indian Premier League was the first major sporting event in 2020 conducted by BCCI after the pandemic outbreak throughout the world.
The Treasurer, Arun Dhumal in a report told the revenues earned by the board, conducting the event with spectators behind the closed bars. However, he did not disclose a complete breakdown of the revenue earned by the board and IPL.
With the unbending Covid rules in India, IPL was taken out to the UAE where it was hosted in stadiums in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah. The board had received formal invitations from two countries for hosting the cash-rich T20 League, UAE, and Sri Lanka. The board went with the former as it had hosted IPL earlier also and Players can commute with busses to reach the parks.
BCCI Treasurer Arun Dhumal:
In conversation with the BCCI secretary, Jay Shah, Dhumal said,” After Novac Djokovic tested positive for the virus, playing an exhibition match in Serbia and Croatia, we were in two minds. What if players get affected. Many people said no to conduct the tournament but Jay was confident to host the series.”
“The board successfully reduced 35 percent of the cost as compared to the previous IPL. We collected almost 4,000 crores of revenue in the tough times. Our TV viewership went 35 percent higher this challenging season. We got the highest opening viewership in all sporting leagues (Mumbai Indians versus Chennai Super Kings).”
“The officials told that almost 40 conference calls were made with endless hours to conduct the tournament. There were many virtual meetings to ensure the safety of the players and safe conduct of the games. Board sent a team to the UAE to keep a check on the arrangements and pre Games assessment.”
Teams were having at least 40 members in their squads, title winner Mumbai Indias carried most 150 members including hair dresser, make-up artist, etc. The board had booked 200 separate rooms, if any COVID case comes out, to keep other members secure and safe.
The first setback came after a few days of a quarantine period with some of CSK members were affected with the virus. We got in touch with the teams and found out they were asymptomatic and were in controlled positions.
The board successfully convinced the UAE government to cut down the COVID restrictions for the players. After the formal meeting between the two parties, the quarantine period cut down to just 7 days.
