The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has slapped Rishabh Pant-led Delhi Capitals (DC) with hefty fines after it breached the IPL code of conduct during the DC vs KKR fixture last night. Delhi were found to be behind the stipulated time during their contest against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and hence charges were levelled by the match officials.
This being their second slow over rate offence of the tournament, Rishabh Pant was fined INR 24 Lakhs while the rest of the members of the playing11, including the impact substitute, were fined INR 6 Lakhs each or 15 per cent of their match fee, whichever was lower.
“Rishabh Pant, the Delhi Capitals captain, has been fined after his team maintained a slow over rate during their TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium, Visakhapatnam on April 3,” said BCCI in an official release.
“As it was his team’s second offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, Pant was fined INR 24 lakhs. The rest of the members of the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, were each individually fined either INR 6 lakhs or 25 per cent of their respective match fees, whichever is lesser.”
Notably, Delhi Capitals (DC) had committed the same offence during the match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in Vishakhapatnam, a few nights ago. For his first offence, Rishabh Pant was slapped with a fine of INR 12 Lakhs.
As per the IPL playing conditions, a team must complete its quota of 20 overs within 90 minutes of play, which includes the 5-minute time-out. Upon failing to do so, the captain and players are handed fines for the first two breaches. But if the offence is repeated multiple times, there are provisions for banning as well.
In case, Rishabh Pant repeats the slow-over offence for the third time, he will be handed a match ban along with an INR 30 Lakhs penalty. The rest of the players will be fined INR 12 Lakhs or 50 per cent of their match fee, whichever is lower.
Delhi Capitals (DC) blown away by Kolkata Knight Riders
While Rishabh Pant and Delhi Capitals were handed some penalties by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the fixture also saw KKR wreak havoc with their aggressive batting display. Delhi conceded a massive 272 runs, which is now the second-highest total recorded ever in the IPL, against Kolkata Knight Riders, last night, in Vishakhapatnam.
KKR mustered 272 runs in 20 overs, thanks to a blitz batting display from Sunil Narine, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Rinku Singh and Andre Russell.
Delhi Capitals (DC), in response, succumbed against the Knight Riders and couldn’t even play the entire 20 overs. DC were bundled out for 166 runs, as KKR took the massive 106-run win in match 16 of the TATA IPL 2024.
