Jadeja Penalised for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct: The International Cricket Council penalized all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja on Saturday for applying cream on his finger while bowling in the opening test of the Border-Gavaskar series against Australia at the VCA Stadium in Nagpur.

India won the 1st test in Nagpur by an inning and 132 runs. Ravindra Jadeja was awarded Player of the Match for 5 wickets and 70 runs in the first inning and 2 wickets in the second innings. Ravichandran Ashwin also took a 5-wicket haul in the second innings. The skipper Rohit Sharma also smashed a century in the first innings.

According to the International Cricket Council (ICC), Ravindra Jadeja was found to have violated Article 2.20 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which deals with acting in a way that is not in keeping with the spirit of the game.

On Thursday, February 9, during the 46th over of Australia’s first innings, Jadeja was observed rubbing his index finger with a cream. The left-arm spinner was seen in the video taking something out of Mohammed Siraj’s palm and applying it to his left hand’s index finger.

While Jadeja was accused of tampering with the ball by the Australian media, the ICC insisted that the cream was only applied for medical purposes in an official statement. In the statement released by the ICC, they stated, “The India team management had explained that the finger spinner was applying the cream to a swelling on the index finger of his bowling hand. This was done without asking for permission from the on-field umpires.”

Jadeja was accused of applying an ‘interesting substance’ on his bowling finger during day’s play during his bowling spell. The claim was further fuelled by former Australian skipper Tim Paine and England’s Michael Vaughan. A video got viral on social media, which showed Jadeja receiving something from his teammate Mohammed Siraj and then applying and rubbing that on his left index finger.

There was no need for a formal hearing since Jadeja admitted the violation and agreed to the penalty Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees imposed.

The Match Referee was convinced that the cream was applied to the finger only for medical reasons. The match referee decided to sanction the player along with the Level 1 sanction he imposed. Because the cream was not applied to the ball as an artificial element, it did not affect the ball’s condition, which would have violated Article 41.3 of the ICC playing conditions – Unfair Play – The Match Ball – Modifying its Condition.

Jadeja’s disciplinary record has also been amended with one demerit point. This was his first violation in the previous 24 months.
