Jasprit Bumrah to lead India: India has had to face a massive setback a few days prior to the beginning of the rescheduled 5th test of the 5-match series that had commenced back in September last year. Rohit Sharma who was the newly appointed captain and was supposed to lead India in all three formats has tested positive for covid 19 days before the important 5th test match against England. The 35-year-old tested positive for covid in a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) that was done while India was playing a practice match against the Leicestershire cricket team.

Rohit looked in fine rhythm as he scored a fluent 25 off 47 balls in the first innings while couldn’t feature in the second innings. The news has sent shock waves throughout the fans and the Indian team management as well due to the fact that Rohit was an important factor in the team and his absence is pretty surely going to affect India’s perspectives in the all-important match that lies ahead.

The biggest question that the management has to find an answer to right now is who shall be replacing Rohit as the captain. KL Rahul who had been named Rohit’s deputy immediately after the latter was named the captain, has had to travel abroad for treatment and thus is certain to miss the upcoming 5th test. According to several sources, Jasprit Bumrah is being tipped to take Rohit’s position in his absence and lead India in the 5th test match to be played at Edgbaston. An interesting fact is that the last time India had been lead by a fast bowler in an international match was back in the year 1987 when India played under the leadership of legendary Kapil Dev himself.

Jasprit Bumrah too has proved his worth on the pitch on several occasions for his team with some incredible contributions with the ball in hand. Despite being just 29, the fast bowler has shown all signs of being able to carry the team forward by bringing in a sense of togetherness amongst the teammates. The bowler has been a part of the senior team for several years now and definitely stands a chance to lead a star-studded team consisting of Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant and others.

Back in January this year, when Jasprit Bumrah Bumrah was questioned as to whether he would love to lead the Indian team ever in his career in future, his response was,“I will be honoured if I am given an opportunity, I don’t really any player would say no to such an offer”. Considering the circumstances that prevail now, it highly seems that Jasprit Bumrah is the most suitable option that’s available right now to the team to whom they can entrust the captaincy duties upon. Jasprit if he’s able to prove his worth on this occasion will certainly be able to add another glorious moment to his illustrious cricket career.
