Josh Inglis Powers Australia to a WINNING Start Against England | Check Updated Points table of ICC Champions Trophy 2025

AUS vs ENG: Australia have made a winning start to the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 defeating England at the Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore. The five-wicket win against England have earned them two valuable points and for England, the two remaining games are now just knock-outs.

Even with the depleted side, Australia managed the win thanks to a heroic ton from Josh Inglis and crucial innings from the middle order. England would feel disappointed and they were a bit unlucky today as well.

AUS vs ENG Match Summary

The absence of Pat Cummins led Steven Smith to captain the Australian side and straight forward, he made the right call at the toss. The team dealing with heavy losses due to injured players and Australia's bowling was looking pretty weak already. On the other hand, England arrived well-prepared, having gained valuable match practice in India before the tournament. With a settled squad and a clear playing XI, they had the advantage of stability and momentum heading into the competition.

England's Innings- 351/8 (50 overs)

England’s innings began on a shaky note as Phil Salt fell early, followed by Jamie Smith, leaving them at 43-2 inside the powerplay. However, Joe Root and Ben Duckett built a solid partnership, taking England past 200 and putting Australia under pressure.

Just when England seemed in control, Adam Zampa dismissed Root at the end of the 30th over, shifting the momentum. Harry Brook fell cheaply soon after, leaving England at 219-4. Ben Duckett, in the process, scored the first-ever 150-run score in the Champions Trophy.

Jos Buttler showed intent but was removed by Glenn Maxwell before he could make a major impact. Livingstone got a start but couldn’t carry on, while Duckett, who held the innings together, also departed in the death overs.

With wickets falling, England struggled to accelerate, losing Brydon Carse late. However, a crucial cameo from Jofra Archer propelled them past 350, setting up a strong total. With the pitch slowing down, England’s bowlers will need to be sharp, as Australia faces a challenging chase.

Australia's Chase- 356/5 (47.3 overs)

With Archer and Wood charging in, all eyes were on the speed gun. However, Australia matched England’s aggressive start, racing to 21 runs in the first three overs. But just like their opponents, they lost early wickets, with Travis Head and Steven Smith falling cheaply.

Despite the setbacks, Australia made good use of the powerplay, reaching 76 runs with Matt Short and Marnus Labuschagne at the crease. Labuschagne fell just short of a half-century, dismissed for 47 by Adil Rashid, and Short followed soon after his 63. At 136-4, Australia needed stability, and their wicketkeepers delivered—Josh Inglis and Alex Carey put together a crucial 146-run stand, keeping their chase alive.

Both were equally aggressive in the chase but Brydon Carse got Carey at 69. Josh Inglis stayed at the other end and smoked his first century in just 77 balls and equaled the fastest century in the ICC Champions Trophy (Virendra Sehwag). Australia needed 34 from 30 and the match was heading to a thrilling end.

Just after Josh's century, Maxwell took Mark Wood on and smashed a six and a four keeping England away from the balance. They both took the team home with no hiccups. The Centurion Josh Inglis finished things off in style with a SIX to Mark Wood. Australia Defeated England by 5 wickets.
