In what proved to be a really exciting and thrilling encounter, IPL 2008 winners Rajasthan Royals took on five-time winners Mumbai Indians in the 14th match of IPL 2024. This match was Mumbai’s first game at Mumbai at their home ground Wankhede Stadium but they failed to live up to the expectations of the fans as the Hardik Pandya led team were handed their third consecutive defeat in IPL 2024 by six wickets by Rajasthan Royals.

RR skipper Sanju Samson won the toss and immediately asked the home team to bat first and the Mumbai Indians batting unit was completely destroyed by the duo of Trent Boult and Nandre Burger. A lot of seam and swing was available on the surface and the duo took full advantage of the conditions as they just outsmarted the Mi batting unit with their variations. Trent Boult (3-22) dismissed MI’s former skipper Rohit Sharma for a first ball duck on the fifth delivery of the first over and immediately after the dismissal of Rohit, Naman Dhir got out for a golden duck as well as Trent Boult caught Dhir plumb in front of the wickets. He didn’t stop there as on the second ball of the second overs of the match, the former MI Speedster got the better of impact player Dewald Brevis and he got out for a first ball duck as well.

Opener Ishan Kishan (16 runs in 14 balls) tried to attack the RR pacers and punished every ball which came in his preferred slot but he was getting troubled by the variations of Proteas Seamer Nandre Burger (2-32)and eventually Kishan perished to Burger as he nicked one behind off his bowling.

Skipper Hardik Pandya (34 runs in 21 balls) walked out to stabilize things for MI and got involved in a partnership with Tilkar Verma (32 runs in 29 balls) but Samson was quick to react to it as he introduced the spin duo of Yuzi Chahal (3-11) and Ravichandran Ashwin into the attack in-order to counter the threat of the MI duo of Hardik and Tilak and Yuzi provided the breakthrough as he sent Hardik back to the pavilion.

Piyush Chawla got a promotion over Tim David but Avesh Khan got the better of him. Aussie batter Tim David tried to play out the middle overs and he did as well but he wasn’t able to capitalize on the death overs as MI were restricted to a poor total of 125 runs in their 20 overs.

The Mumbai Indians bowling unit, especially Akash Madhwal, tried their best to pull off a miracle against RR but the target of 126 runs proved to be too less. The visitors faced some issues against the resilience of the Mumbai bowling unit but a partnership was all RR needed to reach home and that was exactly what Riyan Parag do as he stitched a partnership with Ashwin and guided the Royals in a safe spot and then alongside impact player Shubham Dubey, Parag led the men in pink home.
