MS Dhoni likely to retire after IPL 2023, may take a position in Indian T20I setup: Reports: Mahendra Singh Dhoni might be playing his final season in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as the veteran cricketer is contemplating his retirement after the end of the next year’s Indian Premier League. It is notable that a few reports also claimed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering using Dhoni’s expertise and technical acumen in some capacity with the national T20I side.

The reports emerged after India’s discomfiting exit from the recently concluded Men’s T20 World Cup. Despite performing well in the group stages, team India once again found itself amidst all sorts of trouble in the knockout match.

England handed a 10-wicket loss to India in the second semi-final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022. The defeat against England confirmed India’s return from Australia.

“There has been talk in the BCCI about including Mahendra Singh Dhoni in some capacity with the T20 side to bring in the expert skill for that fearless brand of cricket in ICC tournaments,” the report states.

It is noteworthy that Dhoni had worked with the Indian T20I setup during last year’s T20 World Cup as the mentor. However, this time, the Indian cricket board wants Dhoni to hold the position and work with a specific set of players until the next T20 World Cup.

MS Dhoni is likely to lead Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for one last season. The yellow franchise recently confirmed its list of retained players. Dhoni is among 18 players who have been retained by CSK for the upcoming season of the IPL.

The likes of Dwayne Bravo, Adam Milne, Chris Jordan, N. Jagadeesan, C. Hari Nishaanth, K. Bhagat Varma, KM Asif, and Robin Uthappa have been released by the franchise ahead of the IPL 2023 Auction.
