Mumbai rookie batter likely to replace Ruturaj Gaikwad in the CSK squad
With the conformational reports from the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) management on the ruling out of the skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad due to injury in the ongoing Indian Premier League. After Head coach Stephen Fleming confirmed that Ruturaj Gaikwad will no longer be available to play for Super Kings this edition, owing to his elbow fracture.
It was revealed that Ruturaj Gaikwad’s blow to the elbow against a short ball bowled by Jofra Archer in the last match on 30th March against the Rajasthan Royals. The X-rays followed by an MRI have revealed a fracture in the elbow, reported Fleming.
CSK star opener Gaikwad based on inconclusive reports of his X-ray continued to play against Delhi Capitals and the Punjab Kings with a fractured elbow, while his MRI could be obtained later finally ruling him out.
“So we’re disappointed and feel for him. We appreciate the efforts that he’s gone to in terms of trying to play, but he will be out of the tournament,” said Stephen Fleming.
The CSK side can appoint a new player as a possible substitute for the injured skipper. According to reports suggested by PTI, Mumbai-based 17-year batter Ayush Mhatre might be the one considered for the role.
Earlier claims were made that hinted towards Prithvi Shaw’s possible inclusion into the side, however, not the experienced batter but the newest youngster was called in for trials in the CSK team.
He was earlier called in as a support player in the CSK camp, and it is highly possible that the 17-year-old is expected to be announced as the replacement in the upcoming days.
Mhatre played his first domestic season in seniors cricket in last year, with 9 First-class and 7 List A appearances, as he has largely impressed with his batting performances, going on to be the youngest ever batter to hit a List A 150-plus score.
Stephen Fleming announced MS Dhoni’s return as CSK skipper
The ruling out of the current skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad, who took over the captaincy role from MS Dhoni back in 2024, needed a new captain for the remainder of the season.
Fleming announced during his press release that with Gaikwad possibly ruled out, MS Dhoni, the uncapped player for the season will take over the captain’s band. This seems of great joy to the CSK fans despite Gaikwad being ruled out as a major concern.
“We have an uncapped player, MS Dhoni, who will take over as captain for the remainder of the IPL,” said Fleming.
