Murali Vijay retirement: Murali Vijay, a veteran Indian batter, announced his retirement from international cricket. On January 30, Monday, the Tamil Nadu stalwart revealed his decision via a Twitter post. The 38-year veteran opening batsman has called time on his international career to explore “new opportunities in the world of cricket and the business side of it”.
Vijay’s international career began in 2008 when he filled Gautam Gambhir’s spot in India’s XI for the last Test of the 2008–09 Border Gavaskar Trophy in Nagpur. Vijay went on to play 61 Tests, 17 ODIs, and nine T20Is throughout his career. He last played first-class and List-A cricket for Tamil Nadu in late 2019. Murali Vijay announces retirement
In a note announcing his retirement, the player stated that his time as a professional cricketer from 2002 to 2018 was the most amazing period of his life and that it had been an honor to represent India at the highest level of the game.
“I am excited to announce that I will be exploring new opportunities in the world of cricket and the business side of it, where I will also continue to participate in the sport that I love and challenge myself in new and different environments,” Murali wrote.
The 38-year-old veteran wrote, “To all the cricket fans that have supported me through the ups and downs of international sport, I will forever cherish the moments I spent with you all, and your support has always been a source of motivation for me.”
Vijay was one of the most elegant batters in the opening positions. In 61 Tests, he amassed 12 Test hundreds and 15 half-centuries. He collected 3982 runs, averaging 38.28. While playing with Chennai Super Kings, the Tamil Nadu player also made an impact on the Indian Premier League. The IPL’s top batsman scored 2619 runs at a strike rate of 121.87 from 106 games while scoring two hundreds.
Vijay, who was once India’s go-to Test opener, had lost favor after a succession of mediocre appearances in the 2017-18 season. Vijay was dropped by the Indian team management during the second Test match in Perth, Australia.
