Trusted news sources ESPNCricinfo, Sky Sports and The Guardian have reported that English captain Eoin Morgan will be announcing his retirement from International cricket this Tuesday following a rough patch of performances.
His decision to hang up his gloves at this moment has put ECB’s management in a dilemma as now they will have to decide the next captain of England for the T20I and ODI formats. In this article, we are going to talk about exactly this topic and we shall put forward three prospective captaincy options for the England National Team.
3. Liam Livingstone – Although English big hitter Liam Livingstone has no prior captaincy experience in any format whatsoever, we think that he might be considered as a candidate for the position simply because of the important role that he holds in the English squad, especially in the shorter formats. Liam Livingstone is one of the most famous and able big hitters in the world and it’s a rarity as England doesn’t usually cricket big hitters like him.
It is his unorthodox style and pinch-hitting that makes him so priceless and important in the England batting order and he is one of their un-droppable players in both ODI and T20I.
2. Moeen Ali – English all-rounder Moeen Ali has been a vital cog for the England National Team in all three formats for quite some time now. He has been one of their core players for at least the last 5-6 years and it is probably time that the ECB starts to recognise him for his contribution to the nation by putting him in a position of responsibility. And what better way to do it than making him the captain?
Unlike Liam Livingstone, Moeen Ali already has some captaincy experience and in fact, he led the team in the West Indies series in Eoin Morgan’s absence. They did a great job under his captaincy as well. So why not make a tried and tested Moeen Ali the permanent captain of England? Well, he is definitely the top 2 candidates to be appointed as the new English captain.
1. Jos Buttler – Jos Buttler is undoubtedly the favourite to be appointed as the new captain of the England Cricket Team. He is currently one of the best All-format players not only in England but in the entire world and he is the key player in England. Being a wicketkeeper, it is also ideal for him to be made the captain as it is statistically easier to give instructions to your players from behind the wickets.
Many insider sources have said that Jos Buttler is already being considered as the next Captain of England and in that case, Moeen Ali is likely to be made their Vice Captain. Jos Buttler will thus have an increased duty in the upcoming T20 World Cup if things go in his favour. Apart from scoring runs for his team, he will also have to lead them as their captain.
