NZ vs SL 2nd Test: New Zealand beat Sri Lanka in the 2nd test to grab the series 2-0: New Zealand trounced Sri Lanka in the 2nd test by innings and 58 runs. The host New Zealand stunned the visitors Sri Lanka by handing them a 2-0 whitewash in a two-match test series. Williamson’s magnificent innings helped New Zealand win in a last-ball drama at Christchurch, but the Blackcaps comfortably won this Test at Wellington Basin Reserve.
Two brilliant double tons from the former skipper Kane Williamson and Henry Nicholls were enough to make Sri Lanka bundle out twice within two and a half days. Sri Lanka’s hitters were definitely guilty of far too frequently failing to put a price on their wickets, while credit must be given to New Zealand’s bowlers for sticking to their plans precisely and making the most of the conditions on offer.
The hosts’ victory in NZ vs SL test series completely drowned the visitors’ hopes to play WTC for the first time. After the 1st test lost to New Zealand, Sri Lanka were already out of the WTC final race. In this article, we will walk you through the summary of the NZ vs SL 2nd test where New Zealand beat Sri Lanka to grab the series 2-0!
Let’s take a brief review of the 2nd test between New Zealand and Sri Lanka:
NZ vs SL 2nd test Match Review (Summary)
The second test match between NZ and SL started on March 17 and after winning the toss, Sri Lankan captain Dimuth Karunaratne elected to bowl first in a complete green top. New Zealand got quite a good start and both openers added an 87-run partnership for the first wicket. Tom Latham departed and was soon followed by Conway(78). Then took place the gigantic partnership between Kane Williamson and Henry Nicholls of 363 runs which ended with Kane falling to Prabath Jayasuriya at a personal score of 215 runs. Sooner, Nicholls also struck 200 and the Blackcaps declared their innings at 580/4.
Sri Lanka took off a bitter start and lost four of their top-order batters too early within 34 runs. A small partnership of 80 runs between Chandimal and Skipper Karunaratne was not enough to hold Sri Lanka in a safe place. Sri Lanka lost the last 4 wickets in just 8 runs and was bundled out for 164 runs in the first innings. New Zealand bowlers were on fire and Tim Southee decided to give follow on to Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka lost the first wicket early yet another time but the rest batsmen were quite better than in the 1st innings. This time Sri Lanka saw four 50+ scores by Dimuth Karunaratne, Kusal Mendis, Dinesh Chandimal, and Dhananjaya de Silva. The Lions, although, were not able to cross the trail but they showed a better performance in the second innings. New Zealand bowled out Sri Lanka under 358 on Day 4 well with 58 runs short of the trail.
Henry Nicholls was awarded the Player of the Match and Kane Williamson was awarded the Player of the series.
