It was Pakistan’s first outing to India in eight long years, and all of the current squad members had never been to India before and this is the first time they are running around on Indian soil.
Today, Pakistan was scheduled to play against New Zealand in a warm-up match. And, to be honest, it was a pretty good outing for the Pakistan batters, especially for Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan, and Saud Shakeel.
Pakistan won the toss and opted to bat first. Openers Imam and Abdullah Shafique went back early in Pakistan’s innings. Matt Henry got Imam down in his second over and didn’t bowl after his 3-over spell.
Henry’s absence probably eased the batting conditions for Babar and Rizwan to set eyes on the ball. Babar and Rizwan had a fantastic partnership for the third wicket. Babar hammered Kiwis with a fast and classy 80 but Santner got rid of him.
Rizwan continued the hitting show and smashed an astonishing and his first ton on Indian soil. Rizwan got retired out after 103 off 94. Then came Saud Shakeel, who took all the limelight, and took New Zealand bowling by storm. Shakeel smashed 75 runs off 53 balls and set the tone for a strong finish.
Agha Salman (33), Shadab Khan (16), and Iftikhar (7) provided that final push, and Pakistan ended up posting a gigantic score of 345 runs in their 50 overs.
Pakistan’s batting was spot on but bowling looked patchy. New Zealand were quick to reach the total with 38 balls remaining. Hence, Pakistan lost the 1st warm-up game (PAK vs NZ) by 5 wickets.
