Vivo IPL 2021: Parthiv Patel explains why Mumbai Indians bid for Piyush Chawla in IPL 2021 Auction.
Vivo IPL 2021: Defending champions Mumbai Indians have won the glorious title five times while they will be keen on making it a hat-trick. The franchise bolstered the squad with the purchase of seven players in the recent IPL auction. They were not the most active franchise in the auction but did a great effort to fill the required spaces.
The highlight for Mumbai Indians was the steal of Nathan Coulter Nile for INR 5 Crores after releasing him ahead of the auction. Apart from Nathan Coulter Nile, MI brought Adam Milne, Piyush Chawla, James Neesham, Arjun Tendulkar, Yudhvir Charak, and Marco Jansen.
To everyone’s surprise, five times the IPL winner went for leg-spinner Piyush Chawla in the auction. The leggie who served Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the past was acquired by Mumbai Indian for INR 2.4 Crores.
Former Mumbai Indians cricketer and current talent scout of the franchise, Parthiv Patel explained the exact idea of why MI went after Piyush Chalwa in the recent auction despite having good spinners. The 32-years old said they wanted someone experienced leg-spinner in the squad.
“He knows how to bowl on Chennai wicket or on slow and low wickets. So, I think Mumbai Indians have covered all their bases. It depends on where they are playing, so it won’t be a disadvantage. That’s what champions can do, even after winning a tournament they try and fill spots, and that’s exactly what Mumbai Indians have done,” Parthiv said on Star Sports show Cricket Connected.
“I don’t look this as a disadvantage for the franchise. Look in the previous two seasons, Mumbai Indians had two spinners in Krunal Pandya and Rahul Chahar but everyone could notice that they lacked an experienced spinner in the side. That’s what they have done this time and ticked this void also. They got Piyush Chawla, a very experienced campaigner in IPL,” said Patel.
The experienced leg-spinner, Piyush Chawla has 156 wickets in 164 IPL games till now.
