Pat Cummins has added another reward to his arsenal of achievements. Following the announcement of Aaron Finch’s retirement from the format, the pacer will now serve as the captain of the Australian ODI team. Pat Cummins is also the leader of the Kangaroos in the Test format. With that being said, he has now become the only Australian bowler to lead the Australian team in multiple formats at the same time. The other options available were Steve Smith and David Warner. But they weren’t considered. Here is an in-depth look:
Pat Cummins Interview:
“I have thoroughly enjoyed playing under Finchy and have learned an enormous amount from his leadership. They are significant shoes to fill although we are extremely fortunate to have a one-day squad with a huge amount of experience.”. This is what Cummins had to say when he was asked about how it was to play under Aaron Finch and how he sees the forthcoming challenge.
The challenges on his plate will include the forthcoming ICC ODI World Cup 2023 which is to b held in India. He will be having a very experienced squad in that tournament. This makes the fast bowler the 27th ODI Captain of the Aussies.
Pat Cummins and Other Bowling captains:
There have not been very successful bowling captains, especially in modern-day cricket. Over the years the captaincy has just been given to batters. The reason is the fact that, if a bowler is given the captaincy, he or she remains underused as an asset as the bowler becomes skeptical about when he or she should take over. The other successful bowling captains over the years are as follows:
Player Name | Squad | Tenure |
Kapil Dev | Indian Cricket Team | 1983-1987 |
Imran Khan | Pakistan Cricket Team | 1982-1992 |
Anil Kumble | Indian Cricket Team | 2007-2008 |
Daniel Vettori | New Zealand Cricket Team | 2007-2011 |
Wasim Akram | Pakistan Cricket Team | 1993-1999 |
Jason Holder | West Indies Cricket Team | 2015-2020 |
The responsibilities of Pat Cummins include winning the 2023 ODI World Cup and reassuring Australian dominance in ODI cricket. The other includes managing strong personalities like Glenn Maxwell, David Warner, and Steve Smith. All these players are assets. They are gems and, on their day, can win you games single-handedly but it is about how Cummins will be managing them and putting them to effective use.
