Punjab Kings announce replacement of Glenn Maxwell; Ricky Ponting calls young Australian ahead of playoffs

Punjab Kings has announced the replacement of injured Glenn Maxwell for the remainder of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. The Shreyas Iyer-led has added young Australia batter Mitch Owen into the team ahead of the playoffs. 

Ahead of the game against Chennai Super Kings, Punjab Kings faced a massive blow. Star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell was ruled out of the tournament due to a finger injury. It was learned that he suffered injury during the training session of the game against Kolkata Knight Riders. 

The all-rounder went for scans, and it revealed that his injury was much worse than expected. Glenn Maxwell was deemed unfit to take part in the tournament and, hence, was ruled out of the league. 

With Punjab Kings having a strong chance to qualify for playoffs, there were a lot of speculations about the replacement of Glenn Maxwell. However, the franchise has finally named it and has acquired the services of the batter for INR 3 crore.

Releasing the official statement, the IPL governing Council said: 

"Punjab Kings (PBKS) have picked all-rounder Mitch Owen as a replacement for Glenn Maxwell, who has been ruled out of the remainder of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 due to a broken finger. 

"Mitch Owen, from Tasmania, Australia, has played 34 T20s and scored 646 runs, including two centuries and a highest score of 108. The Australian all-rounder also has 10 T20 wickets to his name. Mitch Owen will join PBKS for INR 3 Crore."

Mitch Owen has been one of the talented youngsters in Australian cricket. He stole the limelight with his performances in the Big Bash League.
