Ravichandran Ashwin's Comments on Varun Chakravarthy After ICC Champions Trophy
Ravi Ashwin, former Indian men's cricketer, believes that Varun Chakravarthy, India's mystery spinner, should be chosen for the player of the tournament in place of New Zealand's Rachin Ravindra in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
India won its third Champions Trophy title with a dominating win over New Zealand in the final game in Dubai. According to Ashwin, Varun Chakravarthy's performances played a vital role in India's victory, which makes him a more worthy candidate for the Player of the Series in the Champions Trophy.
"Whatever, the Player of the Tournament, in my view, has to be Chakravarthy. Although he didn’t play all the matches in the tournament, he still made a huge impact. If Varun Chakravarthy hadn’t been there, I think this game would have been difficult for the Indian team. Varun brought that X-factor. If I (Ashwin) were the judge, then Player of the Tournament would be given to Varun." Ashwin's statement was quoted by NDTV from his Hindi YouTube channel, Ash Ki Baat.
Ravi Ashwin appreciated Varun’s match-winning spell in the final, where Chakravarthy got Phillips with a well-disguised googly. "He wasn’t covering the stumps, so Varun went wide of the crease and bowled that googly.
Despite missing the first two games of the Champions Trophy, Varun Chakravarthy completed his tournament with 9 wickets in just 3 matches, which shows his impact in the Champions Trophy. Varun Chakravarthy will now turn his focus to IPL 2025, where he will rejoin the Kolkata Knight Riders. And Rachin Ravindra is ready to play for Chennai Super Kings (CSK), where he will be playing with Ravichandran Ashwin.
