Rishabh Pant’s captaincy resembles Rohit Sharma, says Ricky Ponting ahead of IPL 2022: As Delhi Capitals (DC) gears up to cross swords against Mumbai Indians (MI), Ricky Ponting, in a virtual press conference, said that Rishabh Pant’s leadership style matches with the current Indian skipper, Rohit Sharma and the two shares a great camaraderie on and off the field.
Rohit Sharma’s Mumbai Indians (MI) will fight against Rishabh Pant’s Delhi Capitals (DC) on March 27th in the Brabourne Stadium to kickstart their Tata IPL 2022 campaign.
Ricky Ponting, Delhi Capitals head coach, believes that someday in the years to come, Rishabh Pant will go on to lead team India in international cricket and his journey would be quite similar to that of Rohit Sharma, who is the current Indian skipper.
“Rishabh and Rohit are quite similar people. I know they are great mates and they are probably exchanging notes about leadership and captaincy. There’s every possibility for Rishabh’s journey to be quite similar to Rohit’s. I have got no doubt that Rishabh could be an international captain in years to come,” said Ricky Ponting in a virtual press conference.
DC head coach further opened up that though Delhi Capitals is missing a few of its overseas stars, there is enough depth in the squad to start off IPL 2022 with a win against Mumbai Indians on Sunday.
“We’ve been working exceptionally hard on making sure that the guys that are here are ready for their first challenge. I believe we have good depth in our squad. Yes, we are missing some overseas players for the first couple of games, but that’s no worry for us. I fully expect that we can get off to a good start on Sunday.”

No personal goals, just focusing on team needs: Rishabh Pant
The conference was also attended by Delhi skipper Rishabh Pant. When asked about his personal goals for the IPL 2022, Pant said he is just aiming to achieve team needs and it’s the most important thing for them.
“I have not thought about my personal goals. We are just focusing on the team’s needs and that is the most important thing for us in the Delhi Capitals. It’s always exciting to have new players in our team, but we are continuing to follow the same process we have been following in the last few years.”
He further opened up on the inclusion of David Warner in the side. DC acquired the services of Australian opening batter David Warner at a bargain price of INR 6.25 Crores during the IPL 2022 Mega Auction.
“David Warner was one of the biggest buys for us in the Auction. I am very happy with his inclusion in the team. Rovman Powell can also be the X-factor player for us. He has immense power and I think it’s going to be great to have him on our side. Hopefully, Rovman can live up to his expectations and help Delhi Capitals this year.”
