Rohit Sharma’s ODI captaincy under threat? Fresh reports make a massive claim
India ODI captain Rohit Sharma has been in the news for a while. There have been several reports that have claimed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) wants a new captain in the 50-over cricket.
However, in a fresh set of reports in the Times of India, it is learned that there is no danger to the captaincy of Rohit Sharma in ODIs. The development was confirmed by Journalist Gaurav Gupta, who took to his Twitter account and stated:
“No danger to Rohit Sharma's ODI captaincy is what I'm hearing... let's see!” #ODICaptainKaun.”
This means his dream to captain India in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2027 is alive. The premier batter recently expressed his desire to captain the side in the tournament. Notably, under his leadership, the team won the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. They won both tournaments undefeated.
Some sections of the reports earlier suggested that if Shubman Gill, who is the new test captain, does well in England, there are chances that he might take over the role in ODIs as well. Also, it was learned that Shreyas Iyer has also put his case forward for the white-ball captaincy after his heroics in IPL 2025.
Rohit Sharma recently announced his retirement from Test cricket
Rohit Sharma recently announced his retirement from Test cricket. He will now be playing only ODIs for India. Along with him, Virat Kohli also followed the same path, and the two legends of the game will be there only for one format in international cricket.
If Rohit Sharma is removed as the ODI captain, this will come as a massive development. This is because he has been highly successful as the captain in white-ball cricket. But with the ICC World Cup 2027 around the corner, it remains to be seen what his future will be as the captain.
