Rohit Sharma's Test FUTURE in hands of Gautam Gambhir! Head coach to act as villain? Check details

India captain Rohit Sharma's future in Tests stays under clouds. The opening batter has been under a lot of fire for his performances in red-ball cricket, even though he has brought laurels to the country in white-ball cricket.

Rohit Sharma hasn't been at his best in the Tests. The premier India batter failed in the entire home season followed by the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. He looked decent in the two-match series against Bangladesh at home and it was expected that he would set the stage on fire.

But, he had a horrible outing in the Tests against New Zealand as he failed in all three games. The India captain also was under pump as a skipper as under him, the team went on to face a 3-0 whitewash in the home Test series for the first time in the history of game.

After that, things got even more worse for Rohit Sharma as he failed terribly in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. The batter scored just 31 runs in the entire series as India went on to lose the series by 3-1 and also lost the place in the final of the World Test Championship.

Rohit Sharma, due to his poor form, dropped himself from the XI in the last game of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. It was then reported that the India captain had played his last game in the longest format of the game, especially with the team losing as well.

But (coach) Gautam Gambhir's viewpoint will have a lot of weightage - Source on Rohit Sharma's Test future

But winning the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 has changed things completely for Rohit Sharma. As per the reports in PTI, it is learned that the India captain's place in the Test is safe. A source close to BCCI said:

"Technically, Rohit remains the Test captain. He voluntarily benched himself from the last Test in Sydney, where he explained that a team can't carry on with multiple out-of-form batters. After the Australian Tests, India hasn't played any Tests, and hence, there has been no change in Test captaincy. Also, Rohit never said he doesn't want to play Tests."

The source added that although Rohit Sharma is still the Test captain, the talks related to the England series will be made soon. He added that head coach Gautam Gambhir will have a big saw in Rohit's future in Tests going forward. He elaborated:

"The selection committee gets a break during IPL. Obviously, with all matches televised, they always don't need to travel unless they have some specific strategy or they want to watch a particular player up close. So once IPL starts, the blueprint for the England series will be drawn at some point. But (coach) Gautam Gambhir's viewpoint will have a lot of weightage."
