Englishmen Jhonny Bairstow’s fine knock of 86 from 48 guided the visitors to a clinical victory in the first T20I against South Africa. With 5 wickets win England took up the lead of 1-0 in the three-match Twenty20 series.

Earlier, at the toss, England opted to bowl first against the Proteas.

South Africa’s inning:

The hosts did not have a good start as Temba Bavuma departed in the first over itself. Skipper, Quinton de Kock, and experienced Faf du Plessis didn’t let the English bowlers took control of the innings. Both the batsmen sewed a good 80 runs stand before the second wicket. 

De Kock (30 from 23) went to the hut off Chris Jordan However, du Plessis remained in the middle to set a good total.

Sam Curran got du Plessis out when the protea just crossed his fifty.

In the quota of full 20 overs, South Africa managed a good total on the board, 179-6 (20 overs). Faf du Plessis (58 from 40), Quinton de Kock (30 from 23), van der Dussen (37 off 28) and Klaasen (20 off 12) contributed to the 179 runs total.

Sam Curran picked 3 scalps while Jofra Archer, Tom Curran, and Chris Joran got one each.

England’s Inning:

England skipper, Eoin Morgan made a drastic change by promoting Jos Buttler to the opening slot while Jhonny Bairstow came at 4.

The chase was not going to be easy for the Englishmen, their openers departed inside 5 overs putting the lineup on the back foot.

The T20I sensation Dawid Malan could not stay in the crease for a long as he went to the hut after scoring 19 runs. Johnny Bairstow from one end took complete charge, getting close to the target.

The turning point in the chase came when Beuran Hendricks came to bowl the 17th overs. Skipper Eoin Morgan and Jhonny Bairstow smashed the protea bowler to 28 runs all over the park, including 3 wides.

The chase was now completely under England’s control. Johnny Bairstow finished the innings with back to back boundaries with a four and a maximum. With these boundaries, England wins the game by 5 wickets and with four balls to spare.

Bairstow was awarded Man of the Match for his clinical innings of 86 from 48 balls.
