'I Told My Wife, Australia series could become my last'- Ashwin: The World Test Championship exclusion handed Ravichandran Ashwin's outstanding Test career a serious blow. The No. 1 rated ICC Test bowler, Ashwin, despite having 474 Test wickets, in the top-10 in the world, over the course of a career-spanning over a decade, was dropped by India versus Australia in the final, which they eventually lost by a margin of 209 runs.



The off-spinner, who considers himself to be one of his biggest critics, spoke candidly about the heartbreaking selection made by the team's management and said he would have loved to play in the title-deciding match.

Ashwin expressed the wish to participate in the WTC Final in an interview with the Indian Express after the final game since he had contributed to the team's success in getting there.



An interviewer asked what Ashwin thinks is the reason for his being snubbed. Ashwin replied, "It's a hard question to answer, right? Because we are standing right after the WTC Final. I would have loved to play because I have played a part in us getting there. Even in the last final I got four wickets and bowled really well."



On the overseas performance, Ashwin said, "Ever since 2018-19, my bowling overseas has been fantastic and I have managed to win games for the team. I am looking at it as a captain or coach and I'm just talking in hindsight, in their defense. So the last time when we were in England, it was 2-2 with a drawn Test and they would have felt 4 pacers and 1 spinner is the combination in England."



"That is what they might have thought going into the final. The problem is for a spinner to come into play, it must be the fourth innings. The fourth innings is a very crucial facet and for us to be able to put that amount of runs so the spinner can come into play, it's completely a mindset thing," he added.

In that interview with Indian Express conducted a week after the Indian team management's WTC decision, Ashwin discussed the knee injury he sustained during the Bangladesh Test series last year. After the trip, he admitted to his wife that the BGT series in February 2023 would likely be his last competitive outing. 



He also said he would like to change his bowling action somewhat because the previous action had caused his injury.



?I?m very proud of what I?ve done in my life not just because of wickets or runs. But how consistently I have been to able to reinvent myself. One thing that really plagues cricketers or anybody as they grow old is insecurity. For me, it?s how cricketers get locked when they get older and when they get experienced; you want to hold on to something so tight, that you eventually end up breaking your own neck,? he said.



?When I came back from Bangladesh, I told my wife that the Australia series could become my last series. I used to have some knee issues. I told her 'I am going to change my action' because it really got a lot of momentum and with that when I was landing, my knee was buckling a little bit. I hadn?t done enough workload because of the T20 World Cup but I was not just not happy with the way the ball was coming, it was just scrambling a little bit here.?



?By the second Test (in Bangladesh) it started to pain. It was really swelling up. So just thinking okay, how do I do this? Because I bowled really well for three-four years, right? To change my action, it?s got to be the most stupid and ridiculous thing to do. So I came back and said, listen, there?s a lot of load on the knee, it?s time to change and I?m going to go back to my action that used to bowl in 2013-14,? he added.



"So I went to Bangalore, I had to take an injection at that point in time, so, I changed my action. I started bowling and my knee pain went away. I practiced for three-four days in Nagpur and I went into the Test match without having played a game with that action at all. On the first day of the Test, I didn?t even feel like a bowler for three to four overs but I was able to get on with it because of the awareness I have," he concluded.

World Cup 2023: Updated India World Cup Squad Announced: Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee of the Board of Cricket Council of India has announced the Updated India World Cup Squad. Ravi Ashwin comes in and replaces the injured Axar Patel in India's Final CWC 2023 squad.



On September 28, it was revealed that veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin will be joining the ODI World Cup team in place of all-rounder Axar Patel, who was unable to make a timely recovery from a quadriceps tear injury. Cricket supporters on social media were ecstatic with the choice and excited to point out that Ashwin was also a member of the team that had won India's second 50-over World Cup trophy in 2011.



"Axar Patel has failed to recover in time for the World Cup after sustaining a left quadriceps strain during India?s Asia Cup Super Four encounter against Bangladesh. The spin-bowling all-rounder missed the final of the Asia Cup as a result," the ICC said in an official release.



India's quest for World Cup victory gets underway on October 8 when they take on Australia in Chennai. Ashwin's experience with the venue, garnered via repeated outings for both India and the IPL Franchise Chennai Super Kings, could prove to be an invaluable advantage for Captain Rohit Sharma given that Chennai surfaces are well known for their slow nature and favor spinners.



The just concluded ODI series against Australia saw an outstanding performance from Ravichandran Ashwin. The 37-year-old could offer India's bowling lineup, which presently lacks an off-spinner, some much-needed variety. Patel, on the other hand, is a far better hitter at position eight, as seen by his recent performances.

The domination of India in the test Cricket in the recent past has been top-notch. India have successfully qualified for both the WTC finals played to date but they had tough days in the finals. Just following the WTC final 2023, India and West Indies were scheduled to play a two-match test series and India won the series 1-0 after one draw.



In the latest updated ICC Test player rankings, there are as many as eight Indian players in the top 10 rankings or each (batting, bowling, and all-rounder) category. Two batsmen in the top 10 batting rankings, three bowlers in the top 10 bowling rankings, and three players in the top 10 All-rounders rankings. The bowling rankings and all-rounders rankings are led by Indian players.

Virat Kohli, India's highest run-scorer in the recently concluded two-match Test Series against South Africa, climbed three spots to take over the number six position from former Pakistan skipper Babar Azam, owing to excellent performances in the Cape Town Test against South Africa.



Along with him, the present Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has also made some massive gains. His aggressive approach at the top in the red ball format is something, the team is getting a lot of benefits with. His recent performances have led him to the 10th spot with 748 rating points.



With 864 rating points next to his name, New Zealand captain Kane Williamson is still at the top of the Men's Test Batting Rankings. Although he wasn't active for a while, each time he came into the square, he stole the show. Joe Root of England comes in second with 859 rating points. Despite a lackluster test series against Pakistan, Steve Smith maintained his third-place ranking with 818 rating points.



Coming to bowling rankings, Ravi Ashwin of India has been leading the board for quite a long time now. With 863 rating points to his name, the spin master Ashwin is at the top. Following him is Australian skipper Pat Cummins who replaced Rabada from the place. Jasprit Bumrah is ranked 4th in the latest updated rankings and Jadeja is fifth.

Mohammad Siraj also took a big leap from 30th rank to 17th rank in the test format following his outstanding 6-wicket haul against the Proteas at Cape Town. Josh Hazlewood also climbed up 4 ranks to share the 7th rank with English bowler James Anderson.



As always, there are no big changes in the All-rounders rankings. Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja is leading the table with 434 rating points followed by his compatriot Ashwin. There is a big rating points margin between number one and number two as Ashwin stands second with 341 rating points.

IND vs ENG: Ravichandran Ashwin is set to reach another milestone as the IND vs ENG 2nd Test approaches. England sealed a famous win in Hyderabad last week and now India and England will head to Vishakhapatnam for the second test. 



Ashwin is just four wickets away from reaching 500 in the red ball format. He was phenomenal in the first Test of the England Tour of India 2024 at Hyderabad where he scalped 6 wickets. 



Ashwin has been India's first-choice spinner in India for a decade now. Whenever India have won a big match in the Indian subcontinent, he is the one with a big contribution in it.

Ravi Ashwin has played 96 tests in total where he has scalped as many as 496 wickets. Of his 96 test matches, 56 were played on Indian soil where he blew 343 heads. Interestingly, he is just 8 wickets away from going past Anil Kumble and becoming the highest wicket-taker in India.



He has bowled 4254 overs in his entire career and bowled 882 maidens. He has the best bowling figure of 7/59 in an innings and 13/140 in a match. With an average of ~24 and a strike rate of 51, Ashwin has picked up 24 fourfers and 34 fifers.



He has bagged 10 wickets in a match 8 times and currently, he is the spearhead of the Indian spin bowling attack, actively hunting from the front.

India lost the opening test of the series. "This victory is probably, 100% definitely, our greatest triumph," said Ben Stokes after a remarkable win in the first test of the India Tour. 



Before the series began, everyone was talking about how Bazball would do against the spinners. Without a doubt, they have won the opening round. The two teams in the spin department had quite different levels of expertise. Jack Leach's niggle plagued him for most of the Test, which made things worse for the visiting team. Nevertheless, England managed to prevail.

IND vs ENG 3rd Test: Indian veteran offspinner Ravichandran Ashwin pulled out from the third Test against England in Rajkot owing to a family Emergency. The news came late on Friday (February 16), following the completion of the second day of play, during which the 37-year-old claimed his 500th Test wicket.



BCCI released a media advisory to announce the news: "Ravichandran Ashwin has withdrawn from the Test squad, effective immediately due to a family medical emergency."



 BCCI also extended their support behind Ashwin and wrote "In these challenging times, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the team fully supports Ashwin."



"The BCCI extends its heartfelt support to the champion cricketer and his family. The health and well-being of the players and their loved ones are of utmost importance. The Board requests respect for the privacy of Ashwin and his family as they navigate through this challenging time."



 "The Board and the team will continue to provide any necessary assistance to Ashwin and will keep the lines of communication open to offer support as needed. Team India appreciates the understanding and empathy of the fans and media during this sensitive period."

With three days remaining in the Rajkot Test, Ashwin's absence may reduce India's playing strength to only ten players. Playing substitutes typically is only allowed for players who are out due to a concussion or COVID-19. As per MCC's rule No. 24.1.1.2, a team can have a substitute fielder for a ?wholly acceptable reason?. A substitute cannot bowl or act as a captain but the player can be a wicket-keeper only with the consent of the umpires. 



As Ashwin did not sustain any injuries or become unwell during the match, India may only use a replacement fielder in Rajkot with the opposing captain Ben Stokes' consent. With Ashwin out of the picture, India's primary spin options for the remainder of this Test are Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav.

Rajiv Shukla, the BCCI vice president, wrote on X.com, "Wishing speedy recovery of mother of R Ashwin. He has to rush and leave Rajkot test to Chennai to be with his mother."



Before the commencement of the series, Harry Brook withdrew for personal reasons, while Virat Kohli likewise withdrew from selection for personal reasons, first for the first two Tests and then for the entire series.



A few people have also been injured. Jack Leach's left knee injury from the first Test ended his possibilities of playing in the series, and KL Rahul's sore knee prevented him from playing in the third game after he missed the second Test due to a quadriceps injury. After suffering a hamstring injury in the first Test, Ravindra Jadeja was unable to play in the second game in Vizag. However, he was able to rejoin the India XI for the Rajkot Test.

India and England are engaged in a five-match test series and home side India are leading the scoreline 2-1 after three tests. India registered a record 434-run victory in the third Test in Rajkot and now the teams are heading to Ranchi for the fourth test. 



Up to seven Indian players are ranked in the top 10 in each of the three categories (batting, bowling, and all-rounder) in the most recent ICC Test player rankings. There is a single batter in the top ten, three bowlers among the top ten, and three players among the top ten all-rounders. Indian players lead both the all-rounders and bowling rankings.



Virat Kohli is the only Indian batter in the top 10 batting rankings. Due to family priorities, he is currently missing the IND vs ENG test series. He is ranked 7th with 752 ratings. New Zealand's Kane Williamson is leading the board with 893 rating points.

Joe Root is having a low test series in India. He has bowled more overs (107) than runs (77) scored in this series. He also lost his third spot following three poor matches in ICC Rankings and now ranks 5th with a 766 rating.



Indian Skipper Rohit Sharma holds the 12 spot with 731 rating points and Ben Duckett follows him. England opener Ben Duckett?s quickfire 153 in the first innings has lifted him 12 places to 13th rank in the latest Test Player Rankings.



Following his unbeaten 214 against England in the third Test of their five-match ICC Men's Test Championship series in Rajkot, India's opener Yashasvi Jaiswal is still rising in the ICC Men's Test Batting Rankings. The 22-year-old left-hander joined an exclusive group of seven cricketers who have scored double century in two consecutive Tests, including Vinod Kambli and Virat Kohli of India.

Jaiswal made history by becoming the first batter from India to rack up 150+ scores on his first three Test tons. Previously, the first two tons were converted to 150+ by Vinod Kambli, VVS Laxman, and Cheteshwar Pujara. Before reaching 23, Jaiswal became the first batter from India to record three or more 150+ scores. He is the sixth hitter to accomplish this milestone overall.



Jaiswal is the highest run-scorer of the series till now with over 500 runs after three matches and jumped up 14 places to rank 15 with 699 rating points. 



With a score of 112 in the first innings, Ravindra Jadeja moved up to 34th place in the batting rankings, while his seven-wicket haul in the bowling rankings moved him up three spots to sixth place. Jadeja has improved his rating points from 416 to a career-high 469, solidifying his place atop the all-rounders' standings.

Ravichandran Ashwin took a wicket in each innings despite missing part of the match due to a family emergency, edging over Kagiso Rabada to lock the leading positions with Jasprit Bumrah at the helm. Top-ranked Bumrah had 876 ratings, followed by Ashwin (839 ratings) in second place.

India vs England 5th Test: There are not many cricketers in the world who have gone on to play 100 international matches for their country, and then there are some who set the bar high and gear up to play their 100th Test match - India's ace spinner R Ashwin is one of them. The veteran spinner will receive his 100th Test cap during the India vs England 5th test in Dharmshala on Thursday, March 07.



Labelled as one of the greats of the red-ball game, R Ashwin recently touched a string of milestones following his landmark 500th test wicket. He became the ninth bowler in the history of the game to pick 500 or more wickets and only second Indian after legendary spinner Anil Kumble.



Since making his debut in 2010, Ashwin has been India's top bowler in different formats. Early on in his career, he took all three formats of the game heads-on and tasted decent success, however, eventually, the spinner would go on to become a test giant. 



37-year-old Ashwin has dominated the test charts for close to a decade now, especially on home conditions. With his canny ability to strike down the opposition and sheer brilliance to outplay them, Ashwin, today, stands as one of the best craftsmen who has ever played the sport of cricket at the highest level.

As R Ashwin takes his landmark 100th Test cap, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) released a video sharing the cricketer's view and emotions as he adds another feather to his decorated hat. 



Former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri, who has closely spent a few years with Ashwin during his tenure as the Indian coach, lauded him for the massive milestone.



"It's not often, you can say that about spinners but you knew very clearly, that he would be the next. The astronaut that he [R Ashwin] is and the wavelengths he gets onto, comes naturally to him and you can see the skill factors just getting better and better," Ravi Shastri said.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma, too, was all praise for the spinner on the eve of the India vs England 5th Test in Dharmshala. The skipper asserted that Ashwin has been a match-winner for the team over the years.



"[It's a] big achievement for any player to play 100 Tests. It is a big milestone. He has been a match-winner for us. What he has done for us, no praise is enough," Rohit said on the eve of the match.



"His performances over the last five-seven years, every series he has contributed. It is rare to have players like him," he added.



Rohit Sharma termed Ashwin as "Cricket Scientist", who has evolved over the years. The veteran spinner used to be an opener early on in his career, but started bowling and is now an impeccable star for the team.



"As a captain, I have seen him since U-19, U-17 days. He batted at that time, was an opener and then he started bowling. And I used to bowl [off-spin] and then became a batsman, so it became up and down for us but it has been good for Indian cricket." Ashwin, the "cricket scientist", has evolved a lot in these 14 years, feels Rohit.

India Cricket Team is all set to undergo a massive overhaul in Test cricket ahead of the next Test series in England in the coming summer of 2025. As per the reports in Cricbuzz, it is learned that Ravichandran Ashwin's retirement is the first one in the ongoing tour, and more are likely to follow. 
The India off-spinner, after the Test match against Australia, which was the third in the series at Brisbane, decided to retire. This decision surprised many because it came in the middle of the series; also, there have been reports that he was conveyed about the future of the team, and they are seeing him as the third-choice spinner after Sundar and Jadeja. 
The reports added that the BCCI is following the same template as they did in 2008. During that time, senior players retired in quick succession as they were conveyed by the BCCI that they wanted to set the stage for the transition.
