Ravi Shastri's valuable advice for Virat Kohli ahead of India-Australia Test series, Rohit-Virat to play Ranji Trophy?: Former team India head coach Ravi Shastri reckons Virat Kohli must pull out of the final ODI against New Zealand, which will be held in Indore on Jan 24, and take part in the Ranji Trophy games to be in the best possible form for the upcoming test series against Australia, which starts on February 9 in Nagpur.



Notably, team India will take guard against New Zealand in the remaining two ODI games on January 21st and 24th respectively and the next set of matches in the Ranji Trophy will also begin on the 24th of January, which makes it a perfect setting for the Indian batter to hone his skills before the ultimate test against Australia.



It is important to note that, Virat has already regained his form in white ball format and is enjoying a wonderful time in the middle, however, his bat hasn't talked a lot in the tests yet since his pale patch. Despite scoring brilliantly in the ODIs, Virat Kohli couldn't do any good in the test series against Bangladesh.



?I've always believed you play more first-class cricket, especially when you are going to play a lot in India. Just feel top players don't play enough first-class cricket," said Ravi Shastri while being on-air for Star Sports during the first ODI between India and New Zealand.



Shastri, who coached an injury-plagued Indian side during India's famous Border Gavaskar Trophy win in 2021, added right now the bigger picture is Australia as the four-match test series against Australia will decide India's fate in the ICC World Test Championship final.

With ICC World Test Championship 2023 Final position at stake, the upcoming India vs Australia test series is going to see a tough battle between the participating teams as they gear up to steal their places for the epic final, later in the year. The four-match India vs Australia test series, popularly known as the Border Gavaskar Trophy, is scheduled to begin on February 9 in Nagpur.



Team India rewrote history when last they met Australia in the Border Gavaskar Trophy. Despite being depleted due to multiple injuries, the Indians rose up to the expectations and conquered the fortress Gabba in Brisbane to seal the four-match series 1-2. 



Notably, the forthcoming test series against Australia will decide India's position in the ICC World Test Championship points table. If India manages to conquer Australia on home soil, they will be through to the final of the WTC, however, a loss would result in either Sri Lanka or South Africa making it through to the final. 



As of now, team India stands in second position in the WTC rankings with a 58.93 winning percentage. Australia is placed atop with an unassailable win percentage of 75.56. India are followed by Sri Lanka (53.33%) and South Africa (48.72%) in the ranking chart.

Captain Rohit Sharma will be back into the test side after a long hiatus due to injuries. He missed the test squad against England and Bangladesh due to injuries, however, this time the prodigy batter is fit and raring to play the BGT. He will be partnered with KL Rahul in the opening position, who is also the vice-captain of the side. 



Rohit's test numbers have soared after he was asked to open the innings. In fact, India's success in England in 2021 was highly pinned on the openers who made a solid opening stand. 



The third position will be held by veteran batter Cheteshwar Pujara, who looked in sublime form during India's recent tour to Bangladesh. The test mainstay scored 90 and 102* in the first test and 24 and 6 in the second test against Bangladesh.

Former skipper Virat Kohli will be in the fourth position. Although Kohli has seen flourishing moments in limited-over cricket, he is yet to redeem himself in the tests. He missed the opportunity to make it big against Bangladesh and could only score 1, 19* and 24 and 1 in the two-game test series.



Shreyas Iyer will be in the fifth position in India's test playingXI. Iyer made most of the Bangladesh test series and scored big runs to seal a spot for himself on the test side. The batter played 87, 29* and 56-run knocks in the two test games.



The addition of Suryakumar Yadav to the test squad for the Australia test series may bring some exciting surprises. He is very likely to make his test debut, playing in fifth position and doing what Rishabh Pant used to do for India.



In Pant's absence, KS Bharat will assume the wicketkeeping duties for team India. Young Ishan Kishan is also named in the squad, however, Bharat will fall ahead of Kishan in the preference order.

All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who has been out of the Indian team for a while due to injuries is expected to make his comeback. Jadeja will play a Ranji Trophy game for his home side on 24th January before making his comeback to the Indian test side. 



Axar Patel will follow Jadeja in the numbering order. Axar has been a prominent force for India in home conditions since his debut. The spin bowling all-rounder is doing everything right to be in the playing11. Axar will be followed by veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who has been magical with the ball for the test side.



Looking at the pitch, which usually offers great aid to the spinners in India, the Indian management may choose to shuffle between the spinners and pacers. They can either opt for two spinners and three pacers or vice-versa in case of the conditions that would suit pacers more.



<h4>Pacers</h4>

Kishan has been a regular in the T20 team for a while now. After his double century against Bangladesh, he is undoubtedly expected to be given a rope in the ODIs. The loud inconsistency depicted by his numbers begs the question, "Is he actually gold or just glitter?"

While there should be no complains about a batter averaging 25 in T20Is, it's the strike rate that is disappointing. An "explosive opener" is expected to make the most of the powerplay, which Kishan clearly hasn't been able to. In fact, his strike rate in the power play plummets to 113.62. His ODI record looks far more handsome. The fact that he's been floated up and down the order as per team's requirements, makes it even prettier. But how much of it is skewed by that one mammoth innings against Bangladesh? What happens when we take that innings out? This is how his record looks without the double century knock:-

As you can see, the record plummets to fairly ordinary numbers. Although one can argue that the sample size is not huge; and after all, this is after we've cherry-picked and taken out his best innings. Yet, there is a counter argument to that. And that is Kishan's List A record.

Again, a modest record without anything remarkable really. And as a matter of fact, 90 games is a huge sample size even if the first of those was played back when he was a 15 year old. 



<h2 id="kishans-selection-in-the-test-squad">Kishan's selection in the Test squad</h2>



Even with his numbers imploring that inconsistency is consistent with Kishan, you understand why teams tend to rate him well in white ball cricket. It is because when he gets going he can single-handedly obliterate opposition's attacks and win you matches. However, his selection in the Test team against Australia is bewildering and unfathomable.

With Rishabh Pant unavailable, KS Bharat - who is largely considered the best gloveman in the country - is expected to take his spot. Bharat, pretty much like Wridhimann Saha, is not the best batter who can keep wickets, but purely the best wicketkeeper. And it makes sense to pick him. After all, you need a skilled keeper on turning tracks and the fact that Ashwin, Jadeja and Axar can bat will allow India to include him in the XI. 



Yet, it's hard to understand why would you pick Ishan Kishan as his backup? Here is a look at Kishan's first-class record:-

Neither is Kishan the best keeper in the country, nor is his batting record worth turning heads. In fact, the Jharkhand southpaw has only played a total of 4 Ranji Trophy matches across last 3 seasons: Two in 2019/20, none in 2021/22 and again two in 2022/23. Moreover, in the two matches he played this season, he didn't even keep wickets. 



Now compare that to, say, Akshay Wadkar who averages 53.31 across 60 first class innings and has been Vidarbha's first choice keeper. (Not to forget the first Test is at Nagpur, Vidarbha's home ground). Or Sheldon Jackson, who averages 48.79 with the bat and is a far superior gloveman. 



Perhaps, the selectors wanted a player in the mould of Pant: left handed dasher who can take the game on and turn it on its head. Howbeit, there is the difference of day and night in the first class records of Pant and Kishan.



<h2 id="so-is-kishan-being-overrated-by-team-india">So, Is Kishan being overrated by team India?</h2>



Sports can be funny at times. I am pretty sure, a lot of articles along the same lines were written for Rohit Sharma as well as Ravindra Jadeja at the beginning of the last decade. Both of them, metamorphosed into players who can walk into any international XI today. Similarly, there is little doubt about Kishan's talent and potential. Albeit, it would not be wrong to say that he hasn't quite delivered as per expectations yet. In the upcoming months, he will have the opportunities to set that right. Though, with many people biting at his heels, those opportunities will diminish fast.

Some of the players from the Indian squad were seen getting in the groove ahead of the marquee four-match test series against Australia, which starts on February 9.



India vs Australia's four-match test series, famously called the Border Gavaskar Trophy, is slated to begin in Nagpur's Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium on February 9. The two sides will then travel to Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi for the second assignment of the series. The final two games of the four-match test series will be held in Dharmshala and Ahmedabad respectively.



The likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Suryakumar Yadav, Cheteshwar Pujara and KL Rahul were among other cricketers who were seen honing their skills in the nets in the photos shared by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) across its social media profiles.

Veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who will make his national comeback after a long injury layover, was also seen having some hits with the bat. He suffered a knee injury during the last edition's Asia Cup which eventually ruled him out for a couple of important events in 2022.



However, the all-rounder is now back on his feet and is slated to mark his comeback in the upcoming four-match series against Australia. Interestingly, Jadeja played a Ranji Trophy match for his home side Saurashtra recently to see his readiness for the marquee series against Australia. The all-rounder returned with a fruitful figure of 7/53 in 17.1 overs against Tamil Nadu in his solitary appearance.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has issued a warning to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) over the jersey controversy ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. This comes after the Indian governing body refused to write 'Pakistan' on their kits for the tournament. 
The ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which is all set to be hosted by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), is scheduled to begin on 19th February. The preparations for the tournament are on, and the ICC and the PCB are taking every step possible to make sure that everything is right on track. 
However, a controversy recently erupted after BCCI refused to write Pakistan on their jersey for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Notably, every participating nation, as per the ICC policy, has to write the name of the host nation below the logo of the tournament on their jersey. 
After BCCI refused to sport it, Pakistan Cricket Board officials made a strong statement, saying that BCCI is trying to use politics in every matter. He, however, mentioned that they are hopeful that ICC will support them and India will be asked to write the name of the jersey on their kits for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

Following this, BCCI also reacted, and the insider from the governing body said that since they are playing in Dubai, it isn't mandatory for them to wear the 'Pakistan written jersey'. The BCCI also stressed that they didn't write Pakistan's name on the podium of the Trophy tours as well. 
Amid all this, ICC has come up with a strong response for the BCCI. An ICC official mentioned that it is the responsibility of the host nation to add the tournament logo to their jersey. He stated: 
"It is the responsibility of every team to add the tournament logo to their jerseys. All teams are obligated to comply with this rule," an ICC official said as per A-Sports, as quoted by NDTV. 
Not only this, it is learned that the ICC also warned BCCI that they would be taking strict action if they didn't wear the Pakistan-written jersey during the tournament.
