IPL 2021: "It is disheartening" no Sri Lanka player will play IPL: Mahela Jayawardene.



IPL 2021: Mumbai Indians coach Mahela Jayawardene in a recent interview said it is really disheartening that no Sri Lankan players were picked up in the recent IPL 2021 mini-auction. He further added that the players from Sri Lanka will have to lift their game and play beyond the expectations in order to get picked in the coming auction of the luxurious tournament.



Since the inception of the T20 extravaganza, Sri Lankan players have played a major role for the sides. The likes of Kumar Sangakarra, Mahela Jayawardene, Muttiah Muralitharan, Sanath Jayasuriya, T Dilshan and Chaminda Vaas have played the league for the most part of the cricketing careers. While IPL 2021 will be without the contributions of the island players.



Senior pacer Lasith Malinga who has been a prominent face for Mumbai Indians took retirement and Isuru Udana went unsold in the auction after RCB released him ahead of the auctions. Udana, Kusal Perera, Vijayakanth Vilasanti and Thisara Perera had registered their names for the Auctions but only Vijayakanth Vilasanti could make it to the final list of 298 players where he went unsold.



Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakarra will be the two Sri Lankan who will be the part of IPL 2021 as a coach.



"I think we still have the representation, so we're happy (joking about him and Sangakkara being in the IPL). But yeah, a bit disappointed. I'm sure a few of the guys were on the radar, but I think it's a tough place because you're looking at 20-odd slots for the overseas players and the majority of the slots were for those fast bowlers and all-rounders, which I think Sri Lanka lacks a little bit of that," ESPNcricinfo quoted Jayawardene as saying.



?I think the younger generation will come to play the tournament but till then it will be a disappointment and disheartening for us. IPL is a place where the best players form world cricket come under one roof and play against each other and to get selected in such league you have to be at the top of your game. It will be a strong message to the younger generation of Sri Lanka to lift the game of cricket and get better day by day.?

Vivo IPL 2021: Defending champions Mumbai Indians? coach Mahela Jayawardene, along with Australian cricketer Chris Lynn and kiwi all-rounder James Neesham, have landed in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Saturday for the upcoming matches of the Vivo IPL 2021.



The franchise is amongst the first few teams to have their base set up in the middle east and begin further preparations for the remainder of the season. The social media handles of the franchise informed the development on Saturday as the three members of the squad arrived.

The Southern Brave lifted the coveted trophy of the inaugural season of the Hundred defeating Birmingham Phoenix in the final.

SLC ropes in Mahela Jayawardene as Sri Lanka consultant for T20 World Cup 2021.



T20 World Cup 2021: The Sri Lankan Cricket Board (SLC) has roped in former batting legend Mahela Jayawardene as the national side's batting consultant for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2021 scheduled to be held in the middle east.



The showpiece event is slated to commence two days after the completion of the Vivo Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 in the UAE and Oman.



The development for SLC came knowing Jayawardene?s outstanding experience with T20 side Mumbai Indians (MI) in the IPL. The former Sri Lankan has helped MI win multiple T20 cups in the Indian T20 tournament.



Moreover, Jayawardene will be aware of the conditions in the UAE due to his outing with IPL franchise Mumbai Indians. He will provide his valuable inputs to the national side.

Hardik Pandya not completely fit for bowling in the IPL 2021: Mahela Jayawardene.



Vivo IPL 2021: Mumbai Indians (MI) head coach Mahela Jayawardene on Friday said that the franchise is in no hurry to push all-rounder Hardik Pandya for the bowling role. Pandya, if forced to bowl, might struggle which may put his World Cup 2021 outing at risk.



The all-rounder was rested in the first two matches of Mumbai Indians (MI) due to incomplete fitness while he made his return in the third game as a pure batter in the side.&nbsp;



The Indian selectors, though, have stated that Pandya is fully fit for bowling in the upcoming T20 World Cup, Jayawardene, Mumbai?s coach thinks otherwise. The franchise took extra precautions for its players, especially, when the T20 World Cup 2021 is just a few weeks away from here.&nbsp;

A captain always has to play the most pivotal role in a team and it's he who is held responsible for any fault that occurs from the team's side irrespective of the sport that is being considered. Seeing his wonderful individual performances, the team management decided to provide him with the captaincy responsibilities for the entire season ahead of the 2016 IPL. Miller was expected to add the captaincy skills to his individual blitz and thereby take Punjab to new heights in the upcoming seasons.&nbsp;



What happened however was a total contrast to the above. The Kings could manage just one win out of their first 6 games under Miller's captaincy. The major reason that might have caused such downfall must be the overall pressure that might have been created upon Miller due to the extra responsibilities provided to him.&nbsp;



His captaincy duties saw him lose his vintage batting style that was full of freedom and free-flowing strokes. He seemed to be trapped every time he came upon the field. The management lost all their trust which they had rested upon him earlier and replaced him with Murali Vijay.

Ricky Ponting's making the list of "Worst IPL captains" must indeed be a shock to every cricket fan on the globe and rightly so. The man under whom Australia won two 50 overworld cups, and won innumerable matches against the toughest of opponents deserves to be called "THE BEST"! It was under his reign as a captain that Australia became literally "Unbeatable".&nbsp;



The credit for their sheer dominance in world cricket for such a long period of time must go to a certain Ponting. When Ricky Ponting was handed the captaincy responsibilities of Mumbai Indians in 2013, the management expected him to perform his captaincy duties equally well for the franchise as well. However, what followed was a total mess.&nbsp;



Mumbai didn't have a properly good start to the season as they lost 3 of the first 6 games that they played and Ponting gave up on his captaincy. The fact that he asked the management to relieve him of the role proves the fact that the entrustment of the extra responsibilities on an ageing Ponting wasn't really a good idea.&nbsp;



The major reason behind such an unfortunate event of the downfall was sure because of the increasing age of the Australian which had pretty clearly marked the beginning of downfall in his career. He also couldn't deliver his responsibilities for Australia during that period beginning from 2011. The burden of captaincy at the age of 39 made him look even more finished as a player. The baton was then passed on to a young Rohit Sharma who then went on to win 5 titles for Mumbai.

Another surprising name in the list is that of Kumar Sangakkara. The Sri Lankan legend who had for the first time been given the captaincy duties back in 2010 went on to lead three different teams in his IPL career. The first team that Sangha got to lead was King's XI Punjab in the IPL 2010. The season however didn't go as planned as Sangakkara in his debut season as a captain could win just 3 of the 13 matches he lead his team in and was thus dropped midway of the season.&nbsp;



Next season he took up the leadership responsibilities of his new team, Deccan Chargers, a side that won the IPL in 2009. The results, however, showed no signs of improvement as Sangakkara failed to make any sort of impact in the two-season he lead the chargers for. The team failed to make the playoffs in two consecutive seasons under Sangha. After the Chargers were bought by the sun TV network in 2012, the franchise changed its name to Sunrisers Hyderabad.&nbsp;



That however didn't bring any change to Sangakkara's captaincy results as he managed to win less than 50% of the matches he lead his side in before the team management took back the captaincy from him. Thus his captaincy reign in IPL remains to be one that he along with his fans would like to forget.

The English batsman Kevin Pietersen also makes the list due to the bad results which he suffered from during his reign as a captain in his IPL career. Pietersen who had the chance to captain his side for the first time in 2009 while playing for RCB couldn't make the most of the opportunity as he managed just 2 wins out of the 6 games he lead his side in.&nbsp;



The next captaincy opportunity came in IPL 2014 for the Delhi Daredevils who had newly included him in their squad prior to that season. The decision however was proved to be totally wrong later on as Pietersen had to suffer 9 defeats out of the 11 games that he lead his side in during that season. This marked the end of his captaincy reign in IPL.&nbsp;



Though he went on to win trophies in the upcoming years in the BBL, his captaincy stats in IPL are nowhere close to the calibre of a player of his kind.

His first captaincy duties came up in the IPL 2011 when he lead the newly added side to the league, Kochi Kerala Tuskers but the results still didn't turn out to be impressive as he managed to win just 6 of the 13 matches he captained with the tuskers that season. He then captained Delhi Daredevils in 2012 and 2013.&nbsp;



He didn't have much success during his time as a captain at Delhi either as he could win only 1/3 of the matches he lead his team in. His side also couldn't make it to the playoffs in the seasons under his captaincy and thus he was shown his way out of the side. Thus the captaincy responsibilities only added to his troubles as his abilities on the pitch seemed to be pulled down both collectively and individually.&nbsp;



His reign as a captain ended with his failure in Delhi Daredevils as he failed to deliver in his last season as a result of which his side finished at the bottom of the table.

India vs Australia Test series: Former Sri Lanka captain and veteran batsman Mahela Jayawardene expects India and Australia test series will an exciting series. The Sri Lankan legend made a prediction for the next Test series between India and Australia using the most recent edition of <a href="https://www.icc-cricket.com/news/3046115" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The ICC Review</a>.



The former captain of Sri Lanka said as much to host Sanjana Ganesan on the recent episode of The ICC Review. Mahela predicted an incredibly entertaining series between the two teams and also backed Pat Cummins' team to win the Border Gavaskar Trophy, which gets underway on February 9 in Nagpur.



India vs. Australia has always been a highly anticipated and closely watched test series where both teams appear to be equally strong but the numbers tell a different story all along. Australia hasn't been able to show off their superiority over India in a Test series since 2011. In the last 12 years, India and Australia have played six test series (Border Gavaskar trophy), with India winning four of them. Australia's last trip to India was back in 2017. India was hammered in the first Test at Pune, yet Aussis still lost the series 2-1. The Australians were a deadly foe back then.

India have claimed victories in both home and away contests in the last three series for the Border-Gavaskar trophy, but Jayawardene has a different opinion. Since Australia haven't won a Test series in India since 2004, Jayawardena predicts Pat Cummins' team will lift the Border-Gavaskar Trophy this year.

?I think it's always going to be a great series. I think Indian conditions and how the Australian batsmen tackle that, they do have a really good bowling unit and how do the Indian batsmen tackle that ? it depends on how each team starts the series and who's got that momentum. But it will be fascinating," Jayawardene said in ICC Review.



?It's difficult to predict, but being a Sri Lankan, I?m hoping that Australia can go all the way. Probably a 2-1 win for Australia, but it's going to be a tough one.?



Australia and India are now in first and second place on the MRF Tyres ICC Men's Test Rankings, as well as in the top two places on the ICC World Test Championship standings, and they are in a strong position to go to the final in June.



Making a remark on Shubman Gill, Jayawardene said ?He's been very good, he's technically very sound and he's a good player of pace. That'll keep him in good stead against that Australian attack, but it's always going to be tough and it will be a very good series. He is in great form at the moment and if he converts that into red-ball cricket and has that tempo, maturity, and understanding of the situations and conditions, he?d be a great asset at the top of the line-up for India. He does give them those good starts at a good tempo to put opposition bowling attacks under pressure."

Boucher has now been dropped, and Mahela Jayawardene has again been brought back into the side as their head coach.

Jayawardene was their most successful coach, leading them to three IPL titles. The Mumbai Indians have also hinted towards retaining the likes of veteran batter Rohit Sharma alongside the Indian legendary trio of Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, and Jasprit Bumrah.

3. Liam Livingstone: The English all-rounder who currently sits at the top of the ICC?s rankings for men?s T20I all-rounders, seems to be on the auction list of every possible franchise in the IPL if the Punjab Kings look to release him. 



Playing for the Punjab Kings, he pushed himself to rescue the Kings several times they needed. The overseas batter can be a good recruit for the Mumbai Indians since they do not have a heavy back of foreign players. Livingstone can play the role of a big-hitting all-rounder down the order and can add his spin to his quality for the Mumbai Indians. 



2. Tristan Stubbs: The South African batter who started off his career in the Indian Premier League as he was first picked up by the Mumbai Indians, though his weak performances found him released after the very first season. He was then picked by the Delhi Capitals in order to set the tone of their middle order in the absence of Harry Brook.



Stubbs since the last IPL has been in the form of his life playing for the Capitals and several other franchise-level teams while also for South Africa internationally. Leaving out Ishan Kishan, he can also be a wicketkeeping choice for the Mumbai Indians. 



1. Yuzvendra Chahal: The Mumbai Indians have been a very convincing team, but since Harbhajan Singh, they have never had the likes of an expert spinner on their side. With some speculations suggesting the probable release of IPL's highest wicket-taking spinner Yuzi Chahal from the Royals side, Mumbai can go all ends to rope in the great leggie. Chahal inclusion in the Mumbai Indians side will add a sense of completeness to their side.
