?In terms of keeping the morale high, it?s not difficult. Kohli does it and he is superb, the way he has trained, practiced. There?s not really much a coach can do when the match starts. Indian red-ball skipper Virat Kohli missed the ongoing Johannesburg test match against South Africa after sustaining an upper back spasm. The news came out when instead of Virat walking out for the toss, opener batsman KL Rahul showed up.



Soon the BCCI updated that the skipper has suffered an upper back spasm and won?t be available for the second match against South Africa. Hanuma Vihari was brought back in playing11 in Virat?s absence.



?Team India Captain Mr Virat Kohli had a spasm on his upper back this morning. He won?t feature in the second Test against South Africa at The Wanderers. The BCCI medical team will be monitoring him during the course of this Test match," wrote BCCI in a statement.



Team India?s test number 3, Cheteshwar Pujara, gave a much-needed update on Virat?s injury after the end of the play on day 3. Pujara, who scored a half-century in the second innings, said that Virat is recovering well and he will be fit very soon.



?Officially, I can?t say much but yes, he is definitely getting better and I feel that he will be fit soon. The physio can answer this better and I am sure an update will come from the BCCI very soon,? Pujara was quoted as saying to the reporters on Wednesday, January 5.

Virat?s absence was a major shock for team India and clearly, India missed his services with Indian batting getting once again collapsed in the first innings after the loss of openers.&nbsp;

Replying to the fan?s query, Gavaskar replied, ?It's a valid question. This is something one could understand if Rishabh Pant had been batting on 30 and 40. This is something he had not done in Australia. There he applied himself, recognised that there will be hard times at the beginning when you come in to bat and then battling through the hard times, he got set and got to know how the pitch is. And then he played the big shots. That's what he did in Australia.?



Everyone was mesmerised with the way Pant charged down the wicket and smacked James Anderson for a six during the England tour of India, last year. He took that as a trademark for himself to put the bowler under pressure, but that hasn't worked for the cricketer in the recent past.



Gavaskar reckons that the stumper batsman can?t lean on a similar approach every time he comes out to play, at least not at the beginning of his innings.



"This is something we saw against England, at the start of the series. When England came to India, he was jumping down the pitch and trying to hit James Anderson? he did that so well. But after that he seems to think that is the only way to play. Team India lost the 2nd test match by seven wickets, slightly denting India?s aspirations to lift the maiden test title in South Africa after touring for more than 30 years. The opening partnership was once again going to be the key for the Indians, as the two openers could only amass 36 runs together before Mayank Agarwal?s wicket fell.



In the first innings of the 2nd test match, team India managed to score 202 runs in the loss of 10 wickets. Skipper KL Rahul top-scored with his half-century while R Ashwin added a healthy 46 runs at the backend.



Left-arm pacer Marco Jansen picked four wickets while three apiece fell in the bag of Kagiso Rabada and Duanne Olivier.



In the chase of 202, South Africa lost Aiden Markram early in the innings. Dean Elgar and Keegan Peterson tried to pace the innings, however, the Indian pacers were brilliant enough to restrict the opposition to 229/10 with a small lead of 27 runs.



Keegan Peterson was the top run-scorer for SA with a good contribution of 62 runs while Temba Bavuma scored a quickfire 51 runs.



For India Shardul Thakur recorded his best ever test figure along with his maiden test fifer as he scalped 7 wickets while Mohammad Shami picked 2 and Jasprit Bumrah got one in his bag.

In the second innings, India?s opening partnership disappointed, as stand-in skipper Rahul was sent back at a score of 8. However, the middle order to some extent soaked the pressure and provided a much-needed cushion.



As they say, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane gave priceless oxygen supplies to their test career by counter-attacking half-century knocks under pressure. Pujara scored 53 runs while Rahane managed 58 before getting dismissed.



Team India in its second innings could only muster 266 runs owing to the steady efforts of Hanuma Vihari, who scored unbeaten 40 runs and batted until the end.



Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi and Marco Jansen picked three wickets each while Duanne Olivier picked one in India's second innings.



South Africa in pursuit of 243 runs to win the test match, just wanted to stay controlled and strong in the middle. The time was never an issue as two days game was still to be played. The host's skipper Dean Elgar lead the batting attack despite taking many body blows. Elgar remained stuck at one side and scored unbeaten 96 runs while from the other end South Africa saw healthy contributions from each batter.



Aiden Markram scored 31, Keegan Peterson scored 28, Rassie van der Dussen played a good knock of 40 runs while Temba Bavuma remained unbeaten at 23.



South Africa won the match by 7 wickets and levelled the series. The decider will be played at Newlands, Cape Town, starting January 11.
