Ashwin will play more limited-overs matches, says India?s white-ball skipper Rohit Sharma: The recently appointed India?s limited-overs captain Rohit Sharma reckons that Ravichandran Ashwin has a bright future ahead in India?s white-ball squad. He opined that having a bowler of Ashwin?s calibre gives the captain a sense of flexibility.?



Rohit Sharma recently took over India?s white-ball leadership (T20Is and ODI) from Virat Kohli. The BCCI didn?t want two separate skippers for two very similar formats and hence axed Kohli from his ODI captaincy roles.



The 35-years old veteran spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin, made his limited-overs comeback in the recent ICC T20 World Cup 2021. He played his last T20I match in 2018 but was drafted back to the squad for the World Cup 2021.



In his recent conversation with Boria Majumdar, Rohit Sharma weighted on the importance of having an all-rounder bowler whose bowling is not affected by any parameters. Ravi Ashwin can bowl in powerplays, in middle overs and in deaths as well.



?Ashwin will give you that flexibility, you can use him in the powerplay or the middle over, so having a bowler like that ? an all-rounder bowler I?d like to call ? who can bowl anytime and anywhere in whatever situation, is always important,? Sharma was quoted as saying while speaking to journalist Boria Majumdar on ?Backstage with Boria?.?

?You don?t want one-dimensional bowlers where you know he can only bowl outside powerplay, he cannot bowl in the death, can only bowl to right-handers, can only bowl to left-handers. The more options you have with bowlers the better, that?s what I felt,? he stated.



Rohit further asserted that Ashwin will become a regular face in India?s white-ball games.&nbsp;



?I thought he?d be a great addition, and I think he?s here to stay. He?s definitely here to stay,? added Rohit Sharma.



The Indian selectors gave Ashwin a chance in T20Is recently, but it would be interesting to see if he gets named in the Indian squad of the upcoming ODI series against South Africa.



As far as his ODI stats are concerned, Ashwin has scalped 150 in 109 innings in One Day Internationals. He bowls with a sharp economy of 4.92 and has an average of 32.91.

BCCI awaits Rohit Sharma to regain fitness, ODI squad announcement might get delayed: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was about to announce team India?s squad for the One Day International (ODI) series against South Africa, however, the meeting has been adjourned due to uncertainty over Rohit Sharma?s fitness.?



It is noteworthy that the new Indian white-ball skipper Rohit Sharma sustained a hamstring injury before the start of the Test series against South Africa. The cricketer was straight away ruled out of the red ball series, however, he can still take part in the ODI series if he manages to prove himself fit.



The Indian selectors want to give every possible chance to Rohit Sharma to regain his comprehensive fitness and hence the squad announcement for the ODI?s has been delayed.



Team India and South Africa will begin the three matches ODI series on 19th January. The second fixture is scheduled for 21st January while the final will be played on 23rd January in Cape Town.



The reports suggest that the team India's physio is yet to receive a complete fitness report of the new Indian white-ball captain. The selection meeting has also been pushed back to January 1 following the issue of the captain?s fitness.

Meanwhile, if Rohit fails to clear the fitness standards of the team, KL Rahul will be the first man to lead the men in blue against the Proteas. Rahul has shown grit and resilience during the 1st test against South Africa, which India won by 113 runs.



Rahul scored a brilliant century (123) in the 1st innings against South Africa, backing it with 23 more runs in the second innings. He was adjudged as the Player of the Match for his sensational batting in the first innings.



The Karnataka batsman is already donning Rohit's shoe as the deputy of Virat Kohli in the test format. He can very well lead team India in the ODI series as well.

SA vs IND ODI: Indian young off-spin all-rounder Washington Sundar has tested positive for the coronavirus and is subsequently ruled out of the One Day International (ODI) series against South Africa.



Sundar was named in India?s 18-men strong ODI squad that was set to travel to the Rainbow nation for the three matches ODI series following the ongoing test series, however, his participation in the 50-overs format has been dented following the covid positive report.



Cricbuzz, on Tuesday, quoted a BCCI official as saying, ?He tested positive some days back and it has been decided that he will not travel with the squad."



Seasoned off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and Yuzvendra Chahal are there in India?s contingent travelling to South Africa.&nbsp;



The recent reports also suggested that the BCCI has asked Jayant Yadav to stay back in South Africa after the conclusion of the test series. He will come in India?s ODI squad filling up the place of Washington Sundar.

Sundar?s unfortunate covid positive report will be a blessing in disguise for Ravichandran Ashwin, who is making his ODI comeback after a long haul of about 4 years. He featured in an ODI fixture back in September 2017 against West Indies and since then he has been sidelined from the limited-overs matches.



Washington Sundar was last seen in action in T20Is against England, the previous year. Since then he has been amidst injuries. Owing to the injury, he had to miss the second phase of the IPL 2021 and the further international matches and tournaments.



He returned back to the field of cricket recently and featured his domestic side, Tamil Nadu, in Vijay Hazare Trophy and other home tournaments.

Team India, batting second, gave a solid start to the innings even after the crucial early wicket of KL Rahul. Southpaw Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli stitched a healthy partnership for the team, however, another middle-order collapse gave hiccups to the formidable India side.

Andile Phehluywayo was the South African side's leading run scorer, scoring 33 runs in 49 balls. The Bowlers also didn't perform well despite the low target, but they got only two wickets in 16.4 overs.



Keshav Maharaj and Andile Phehluywayo were the only bowlers from South Africa who took a wicket in this match. Both took one wicket; however, all the bowlers leaked many runs in the game, leading the Indian team to chase the target easily.



Team India showed excellent cricket with both bat and ball as they won the match by eight wickets and chased the target of 117 runs in just 16.4 overs. The Debutant Sai Sudharsan scored 55 runs, whereas Shreyas Iyer scored 52 runs and led the Indian Team to victory.

The player of the match was Arshdeep Singh, who took a wicket haul in this match against a strong South African batting line-up at a batting-friendly track. Avesh Khan also bowled well in the first ODI match as he took four wickets. Therefore, Indian players fully dominated the match.



As of now, the Indian team is leading the three-match ODI series against South Africa by 1-0, but two matches remain, and it will be interesting to see how these young Indian players will perform in the upcoming games.

Firstly, they need to win the fifth and final test at the SCG, and they will end with a scoreline of 2-1. Notably, Australia have two tests in Sri Lanka, and South Africa have two tests (one is underway) against Pakistan. If India win the BGT series 2-1, then they will hope that Sri Lanka can draw one of two tests against Australia or Pakistan beat South Africa in one game.
Secondly, if the BGT series ends at 2-2, then for India's qualification, Sri Lanka and Pakistan have to beat Australia and South Africa in both games. If the BGT series ends at a scoreline of 1-1, then the scenario will be Sri Lanka beating Australia in one game or Pakistan winning both matches against South Africa to help India qualify. Notably, if India lose the BGT series, they are out.

Speaking to Insidesports regarding the possible retirement of Rohit, a BCCI official said, " There have been no discussions regarding the retirement of Rohit (Sharma). All of these are rumours and we don't prefer to respond on rumours. We are hearing these baseless rumours for the first time. The Indian skipper is currently having a tough time out there in the middle with the bat in Australia. If we take a look at his last 10 Test innings, he has managed to score just a single fifty. In the last 10 Test-innings, the 37-year old has scored 3, 10, 6, 3, 11, 18, 8, 0, 52 and 2 runs respectively. Even in the first inning of the Melbourne Boxing-Day Test, the former Mumbai Indians captain got dismissed after scoring just three runs.
<h2>Rohit Sharma's Test career so far</h2>
37-year-old Rohit Sharma has taken part in 66 Test-matches so far in his career. In 114 innings of these contests, he has managed to score 4,289 runs at average of 41.24 with the help of 12 hundreds and 18 fifties with a highest score of 212 runs next to his name. It's worth noting that Sharma made his Test debut in 2013 versus the Windies.

A captain of a team is regarded as the most important and experienced player and their role is to rescue their team from difficult situations and lead them to victory. However, in the case of Rohit Sharma, he is proving to be the weakest link of the Men in Blue.
