The Chennai Super Kings did not have an ideal season in TATA IPL 2022. The team struggled to keep the momentum going. They ended second last on the points table just ahead of the Mumbai Indians. They bagged a total of 8 points in the tournament. However, some things did work in their favor. The Chennai Super Kings have always relied on multi-dimensional players to get the job done. They have had players like Albie Morkel, Suresh Raina, Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur, and Dwayne Bravo. All these players did more than one job on the field and were the face of CSK. So, who are the top all-rounders that CSK can target in TATA IPL 2023:
1) Sam Curran can play for CSK in TATA IPL 2023:
Sam Curran has previously played for the franchise. He is a great package. Sam Curran provides left-arm pace in the powerplay and the middle-overs. If required Sam can bat up the order as an anchor or a pinch hitter. He can also bat at number 7 as a finisher. All in all, Sam provides his best abilities for the franchise. He had opted out of the TATA IPL 2022 because the ECB had asked him to stay back for a fitness camp. His presence is expected in TATA IPL 2023. With his presence, CSK can try to create balance in the lower-middle order. Here is a look at his IPL stats:
Statistic | Value |
Matches | 32 |
Runs | 337 |
Wickets | 32 |
Batting Average | 22.67 |
Bowling Average | 31.09 |
Batting Strike Rate | 155.4 |

2) Shahbaz Ahmed can play for CSK in TATA IPL 2023:
CSK will be very keen on picking Shahbaz Ahmed. Shahbaz Ahmed is the left-arm spinner from West Bengal who has been associated with RCB for the past few years. The CSK management is in a rift with Ravindra Jadeja and there is a chance they might release Jadeja. Jadeja’s void is something that can never be filled as he is the top all-rounder in the world. But if that’s the case CSK must hope that RCB let Shahbaz Ahmed go. Shahbaz has been very impressive in the recently concluded tournament. He has the ability of Ravindra Jadeja to bowl quick overs. He fixes his spot on the pitch and keeps bowling consistently in those areas. His batting has been on the rise. He is a very highly rated batter by Virat Kohli. Here is a look at his IPL stats:
Statistic | Value |
Matches | 29 |
Runs | 279 |
Wickets | 13 |
Batting Average | 21.2 |
Bowling Average | 36.21 |

3) Dwaine Pretorius will play for CSK:
Dwaine Pretorius, the South African all-rounder is already associated with the Chennai Super Kings. In IPL 2021 he was a net bowler/stand-by player for CSK. He then got picked in the main squad ahead of TATA IPL 2022. In TATA IPL 2023 it is expected that CSK will back and retain him. He has always been very effective whenever he has got an opportunity. CSK likes senior and experienced players and Dwaine certainly falls in that category.
Dwaine has been playing international cricket for South Africa for the past 4 years. He bowls the slower ones and yorkers. Dwayne Bravo is aging fast and MSD will be keen on looking for someone to fill Bravo’s void. Pretorius can be backed as he has the skill set required for the same.
