Varma, who created a name for himself with his sensational performances in the Indian Premier League, is replicating the feats in T20Is and making the most of the given opportunity.
Starting his international career on a bright note, Tilak Varma notched up scores of 39, 51 and an unbeaten 49 in the recently held three T20I games against West Indies. His performances have not only impressed the cricket pundits in all corners of the world but also made him become a surprise pick for India in the ODI World C3up 2023 Squad.
Notably, Varma’s display of fine strokeplay and sensible gameplay advocated for his selection in India’s squad for the ODI World Cup 2023. In fact, the likes of R Ashwin and former India selector MSK Prasad reckons BCCI should at least consider him.
It is interesting to note that, Tilak flourished under the leadership of Rohit Sharma in Mumbai Indians (MI). In fact, Rohit, in one of the interviews during IPL 2023, said that Varma will make a name for himself just like the guys like Jasprit Bumrah did.
Talking about his IPL stats, Tilak Varma scored 397 runs in the IPL 2022 at an average of 36.09. Meanwhile, he bettered his performance in the IPL 2023 with 343 runs at an impressive average of 42.88.

However, amid all the talks and debates, Indian captain Rohit Sharma has given his opinion on the selection of Tilak Varma for the marquee event.
Rohit was all praise for the youngster, who has shared the dressing room with the Indian captain during the Indian Premier League in Mumbai Indians (MI).
“He [Tilak Varma] looks very promising. I have seen him for two years now, he has got the hunger, and that is the most important thing,” Rohit Sharma said.
Lauding him further, Rohit Sharma added, “In him, I can see, for the age that he is of, he is quite mature. He knows his batting so well. When I speak with him I understand that the boy knows his batting – where he has to hit, what he has to do in that period.”
The skipper added that he can’t comment on Tilak Varma’s selection in the ODI World Cup 2023 squad, but the world has seen what he can do in just the first few matches of his international career.
“That is all that I will say about him, I do not know about the World Cup and all, but definitely the guy is talented and he showed it in these few games that he has played for India,” he added.
