With Rohit Sharma leading the Indian side into the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy final, India will face a confident New Zealand side in the finals after the Kiwis earned a huge win over South Africa at Lahore.

India played their first ICC final match back in 1983, and since then the Indian side has been invincible in the limited-overs format. Since then, India has been part of several ICC knockout events, while they have appeared in 13 finals, with their 14th appearance awaited in the upcoming final of the Champions Trophy on the 9th of March.

India’s record in the ICC Finals:

India vs New Zealand in CT Finals

India played their first ever finals in the ICC Cricket World Cup in 1983 against the then two-time World Champions, West Indies. India defeated the World Cup giants and went on to be the second team to lift the World Cup trophy.

India's next final took a long wait of 17 years, as India next qualified for their first-ever Champions Trophy final in 2000 under the leadership of new skipper Sourav Ganguly. Ganguly led India to successive Champions Trophy finals in 2000 and 2002, while next securing their entry into the final of the 2003 ODI World Cup.

Next came the reign of great Indian skipper MS Dhoni, who led India into the finals of the first-ever T20 World Cup, where India secured a historic win at the Bull Ring in Johannesburg.

Dhoni has had immense success in recent years, winning the 2011 World Cup final against Sri Lanka and the 2013 Champions Trophy final. His only final loss came in the 2014 T20 World Cup against a Sri Lanka side led by Sangakkara.

Under veteran batsman Virat Kohli, India qualified for the 2017 Champions Trophy and though deemed favourites the defending champions lost their trophy to arch-rivals Pakistan. Also under Virat, India was one of the two finalists in the first-ever ICC World Test Championship

Rohit Sharma, next in the list of the finest among ICC skippers, led India to successive finals, the first being the WTC 2023 final, followed by an undefeated entry into the World Cup final of 2023.

Sharma also claimed India’s first ICC trophy ever since 2013, when he led India to a T20 World Cup win in 2024 against a boosted South African side. Now under Rohit’s leadership, India has qualified for the Champions Trophy 2025 final.
