Not many would have boasted Afghanistan to beat England, rather, we should say, demolish the World Champions, but that's the reality of cricket. The game is highly unpredictable and a player having a good day in the field can turn the table upside down easily.
England were simply poor with both batting and bowling in the game against Afghanistan, at Arun Jaitley Stadium. Both their departments looked rusty. That being said, nothing to take away from Afghanistan, they brilliantly turned up in Delhi to beat the reigning champions, who are touted as one of the contenders for the ICC World Cup 2023.
After being put first to bat in Delhi, Afghanistan scored 284 runs before getting wrapped up, just one delivery shy of 50 overs. Opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz was their top scorer with 80 runs under his belt. Gurbaz not only provided Afghanistan with a brisk start, but also helped the side with consistent ticking of the scoreboard.
Besides, Gurbaz, the wicketkeeper batter Ikram Alikhil played a healthy 58-run knock while his team saw a debacle in the middle order. Later in the innings, Rashid Khan and Mujeeb ur Rahman played handy knocks to take Afghanistan's total to 284 against England.
Though, initially, England were expected to hunt this target quite easily, their innings was made to struggle by the Afghan bowlers. Besides Harry Brook and to some extent Dawid Malan, no other batter looked comfortable against Afghanistan.
Brook kept England's hopes of winning the contest alive until he was in the middle, but his dismissal in the 35th over shattered the hopes of Englishmen. Brook was dismissed by Mujeeb ur Rahman at a score of 66 runs.
Afghanistan bowled out England in just 40.3 overs at a score of 215 runs and won the contest by 69 runs.
Mujeeb ur Rahman and Rashid Khan were the pick of the bowlers with three wickets each while Mohammad Nabi got two for him and Naveen ul Haq and Fazhalhaq Farooki got one apiece.
With the win, Afghanistan took a giant leap in the World Cup 2023 Points Table. The team is now placed in the sixth place. Below is World Cup 2023 Points Table Updated (October 16) after England vs Afghanistan: India on TOP Spot | ICC World Cup 2023 Most Runs, Most Wickets All Stats.
