Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium was often criticized for offering a little too much for the spinners and the surface was not poised to play, however, the last night fixture between South Africa and Sri Lanka was completely opposite. South Africa scored a mammoth 428 runs in their quota of 50 overs with three of their batters notching up a century. In response, Sri Lanka scored 326 runs before getting packed by the Proteas.
Temba Bavuma-led South Africa won the World Cup 2023 Match 4 against Sri Lanka by 102 runs.
Batting first, the Proteas couldn’t get off to an encouraging start as skipper Temba Bavuma was trapped lbw by Dilshan Madushanka quite early in the innings. The fall of the skipper didn’t hurt the proteas as much as they had several big guns waiting in the dugout.
Quinton de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen joined forced and ripped the Sri Lankan bowling apart. Both the batters scored centuries in no time. With the fall of Quinton de Kock, Aiden Markram came at the middle and he too smoked Sri Lankan bowlers out of the ground and piled up a ton.
In the end, Heinrich Klassen and David Miller played some quickfire innings to take South Africa’s total to 428 runs in 50 overs, which has now become the highest-ever total recorded in the ICC World Cup tournament.
In pursuit of a demanding total, both Sri Lankan openers perished away in the flick of the time. However, Kusal Mendis brought the innings back on track with his sensational hitting which saw him score 76 runs from 42 deliveries.
Later in the innings, Charith Asalanka played 79 run innings in 65 deliveries followed by the skipper’s knock of 68 runs by Dasun Shanaka. However, all these efforts were not enough for Sri Lanka to go over South Africa in the contest.
South Africa post the dismissal of Dasun Shanaka quickly wrapped up Sri Lanka’s innings. The Lankan Lions could score 326 runs in 44.5 overs before getting bundled out and losing the game by 102 runs.
The win fetched South Africa two points in the ICC World Cup 2023 points table, besides a healthy net run rate in excess of 2. Below is the World Cup 2023 Points Table Updated (October 8) after South Africa vs Sri Lanka, South Africa starts BIG, Highest Run Getter, Most Wickets, All Stats.
