WPL 2023 Points Table: The Womens Premier League (WPL) 2023 kickstarted on 4th March with the opener held between Mumbai Indians Women (MI-W) and Gujarat Giants (GG), which was convincingly won by the former side by 143 runs. The second day of the WPL 2023 had a double header which saw DC-W take on RCB-W in the day game and UP Warriors lock horns against Gujarat Giants in the evening game. Mumbai Indians Women (MI-W) began their outing in the inaugural season of the WPL with an emphatic victory over Gujarat Giants in the DY Patil Stadium. After notching up 207 runs in the first innings, Mumbai bowlers rose to the occasion to dismantle the Gujarat batters and wrap their innings at a meagre 64 runs.
Meanwhile, on the second day, Delhi Capitals Women (DC-W) registered a victory against Royal Challengers Bangalore Women (RCB-W) in the day contest. The Capital’s led by Meg Lanning rocked the RCB-W by mustering a massive 223 runs, batting first. DC openers did exceedingly well to lay a solid foundation for the mayhem. While Lanning scored 72 runs, young Shafali Verma played 84-run innings against RCB-W.
In response to a colossal total of 223 runs, couldn’t stitch a strong partnership which would have led them closer to the target. Skipper Smriti Mandhana remained RCB-W’s highest run-getter in the game with 35 under her belt, while Ellyse Perry, Heather Knight and Megan Schutt were other players who tried to keep RCB in the game, but eventually succumbed.
DC-W won the first game by 60 runs and bagged two crucial match points along with a positive net run rate in the points table.
In the second game of the day, Gujarat Giants (GG) once again saw itself under the pump as it registered another loss in the WPL 2023. This time it was against the UP Warriorz, who sealed the contest by 3 wickets. On a batting surface, GG could only put up a total of 169 runs in 20 overs which was comfortably completed by the UP-Warriorz.
With the win, UP Warriors took two match points while Gujarat Giants (GG) slip to the bottom of the points table with two consecutive defeats in two days of the WPL 2023.
