Joe Root surpasses Alastair Cook to Become Leading Run-Getter for England in Test-Cricket

England’s Star-Batter Joe Root scripted history on Wednesday, 9th of October as he became England’s Leading Run-Getter in the longest format of the game. The 33-year-old broke the record of former-skipper Alastair Cook. Cook, who featured in 161 Test-Matches for the Three Lions, managed to amass 12,472 runs at an average of 45.4.

Root, who is taking part in his 147th Test-Match for the Ollie-Pope led team in Multan versus Pakistan, has scored 12,473 runs so far. The right hander needed to score 71 runs to surpass Cook and he did just that as he achieved the feat in the first inning of the first Test-Match versus Pakistan.

Top 5 Run-Getters for England in Test-Cricket

1 . Joe Root – 12,474* runs

2. Alastair Cook – 12,472 runs

3. Graham Gooch – 8,900 runs

4. Alec Stewart – 8,463 runs

  1. 5. David Gower – 8,231 runs

By shattering Cook’s record, Joe has also become the 5th highest run-scorer in the history of the longest format of the game. India’s legendary batter Sachin Tendulkar holds the record of the highest run scorer in the five-day format with 15,291 runs next to his name in 200 Test-Matches. He is followed by Australia’s former captain Ricky Ponting (13, 378 runs), South African All-Rounder Jacques Kallis (13, 289 runs) and Rahul Dravid of India (13, 288 runs).

Earlier on Tuesday, 8th of October, during the 2nd days’s play of the first Test-Match between Pakistan and England, Root scripted yet another record as he became the first player to amass 5000 runs in WTC (ICC World Test Championship).

The former England skipper is the all-time leading run-getter in the history of WTC and he also holds the records of playing the highest number of matches and scoring the highest number of centuries in the history of the competition.

The star-batsman, who is currently the number one ranked Test Batter, would be looking to convert this good-start into a big knock and help his side crush Pakistan’s hopes of taking a huge-lead in the 1st inning.
