Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024: Fierce rivals India and Australia are set to square off against each other in the highly anticipated and nail biting Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024, set to kick off on Friday, 22nd of November onwards. Over the years, this bilateral Test-Series has gone on to become one of the most thrilling and fascinating rivalries in the world of Cricket, especially after the Men in Blue managed to defeat the Mighty Australians in their own backyard on two-successive occasions.
But, this time around the stakes are going to be even more higher as the tourists have to mandatorily secure wins in four fixtures out of five to guarantee their spot in the World Test Championship 2023-2025 final, which adds an extra-layer of excitement and intensity to this already scorching series.
The aim of Rohit Sharma & CO is to secure a hat-trick of BGT victories in Australia but the Kangaroos led by Pat Cummins are much stronger than before. Therefore, there's every possibility that the excitement level of the forthcoming series will reach its peak.
The opening fixture of the five-match BGT Test-Series will be played at the Optus Cricket Stadium in Perth and following the conclusion of the Perth Test, the two teams will depart to Adelaide for the 2nd match starting on the 6th of December at the Adelaide Oval Cricket Stadium.
The iconic cricket stadium, The Gabba, will be playing host to the the third contest which will commence on 14th of December while the boxing day test-match and the 4th match will take place at the MCG from 26th of December. The series will come to a conclusion at the Cricket Stadium of Sydney (SCG) in the first week of January of 2025.
Ahead of the five-match BGT Test-Series, the Aussies unveiled their 13-man roster for the 1st test, with Pat Cummins handling the leadership duties. The duo of Josh Inglis and Nathan McSweeney earned their maiden Test Cricket call-ups for the opening contest. 25-year-old McSweeney is anticipated to open the inning for Australia alongside veteran batter Usman Khawaja.
The trio of Josh Hazlewood, captain Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc will be handling the pace bowling department while Scott Boland is the fourth pacers in the squad.
Highly experienced off-spin bowler Nathan Lyon will be the main spinner and he?s also the lone spin-bowling option with the likes of Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne expected to provide their part-time spin bowling as per the demands of the situation.
The Indian Cricket Team on the other hand, will miss the services of regular skipper Rohit Sharma for the 1st test-match in Perth as he?s spending time with his family since his wife Ritika Sajdeh gave birth to their second child.
In the absence of Sharma, elite fast-bowler and vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah is anticipated to lead the Men in Blue while Rohit will be returning from the 2nd test onwards in Adelaide.
Additionally, things got even more difficult for the tourists as star batsman and the Prince of Indian Cricket Shubman Gill fractured his thumb in the intra-squad match simulation and this has ruled him out of the Perth Test-Match.
Southpaw Devdutt Padikkal has been retained in the squad as a backup option for Gill and he could be seen batting at the number three position in tomorrow?s Perth Test-Match.
The likes of Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Yashasvi Jaiswal and wicketkeeper batsman Rishabh Pant will play an important role in the batting-department for the two time WTC runners-up.
Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Harshit Rana and Akash Deep will be providing pace bowling support to Jasprit Bumrah while Jadeja, Ashwin and Sundar are the three spin bowling options in the squad of the Men in Blue.
