Former England captain and player Kevin Pietersen is all set to make his comeback in the IPL, not as a player but as a coach as he's set to join the Delhi Capitals (DC) as their mentor for IPL 2025. This assignment with DC will be the first ever coaching assignment in the IPL for Pietersen. He last played in the cash rich t20 league nine years ago in 2016. After captaining the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) for a brief period of time in the 2009 edition of the IPL, he was appointed as the full time skipper of DC in 2014, where they finished at the last place, managing to secure just two wins in 14 contests.
The legendary English batter has also captained England 15 times, including the two-match Test Series versus the Indian National Cricket Team in 2008. Besides the IPL, the former right handed batter has also played in the Pakistan Super League (PSL), Caribbean Premier League (CPL) and the Big Bash League (BBL). Overall, he has featured in 200 t20 matches, amassing a total of 5,695 runs at a decent average of 33.89 and a strike rate of 136.
The Delhi Capitals, who have qualified for the final of the IPL on just a single occasion in 2020, finished sixth in the overall standings last season and they went into this year's mega auction with one of the biggest purse among all the ten participating teams after releasing majority of their players and retaining the services of only Kuldeep Yadav, Abhishek Porel, Axar Patel and Tristan Stubbs.

Match number four of the 2025 Women's Premier League (WPL) was played between the defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and the Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Kotambi Stadium of Vadodara. Both teams are regarded as two of the strongest teams in the competition and everyone was expecting to see a hard-fought contest between the two sides. 

But, it turned out to be a one-sided contest and the Bengaluru fans got the chance to be the happier fan base at the end of the game as the Smriti Mandhana-led team secured a comfortable & easy win over the Meg Lanning-led Delhi Capitals by a margin of eight wickets.

The 2nd match of the 3rd season of Women's Premier League 2025 (WPL)  at the Kotambi Stadium of Vadodara between arch-rivals Mumbai Indians (MI) and Delhi Capitals (DC). This match is considered the El Clasico of the WPL as both are regarded as two of the strongest &amp; dominating teams in the competition's history. This match at the Kotambi Stadium between the Harmanpreet Kaur-led Team &amp; Meg Lanning-led team proved to be a nail-biting and thrilling contest as  Delhi ended up emerging victorious, winning by a small margin of  2 wickets in a game that was filled with twists and turns. It was a nail-biting finish but in the end, a photo finish from Arundhati Reddy and the Capitals are off to a winning start. 
Shafali Verma's aggressive start with the bat helped DC set the tone of the chase, but her dismissal allowed MI to regain control and get back in the game. However, much to the dismay of the MI fans, two crucial partnership stands, a 33-run stand between Niki Prasad &amp; Alice Capsey for the fifth wicket, followed by a crucial partnership of 31 runs for the sixth wicket between Niki Prasad and Sarah Bryce, helped the two-time runners-up edge closer to tasting success. In the end, it was tailender Arundhati Reddy who held her nerve and scored the winning runs off the final delivery of the contest to seal a nail-biting win for Delhi.
Mumbai's bowling and captaincy, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, left a lot to be desired. Kaur's calculations went awry, as she was unable to utilize Saika Ishaque's remaining over, having already bowled the 19th. The Mumbai bowlers did manage to pick up some wickets, with Amelia Kerr and Hayley Matthews claiming two each, while Shabnim Ismail, Natalie Sciver-Brunt, and Sajana S took one apiece.

In the first inning of this encounter, the Mumbai-based team opted to have a first t and posted a reasonable score of 164 runs thanks to a well made &amp; excellent knock of 80 runs from Natalie Sciver-Brunt while Harmanpreet Kaur also played a good hand with her aggressive inning of 42 runs as the rest of the MI batters failed to contribute. The trio of Shikha Pandey (2-14), Annabel Sutherland (3-34), and Minnu Mani (1-23) were the standout bowlers for the Delhi side.
But in the end, the batting might of the two-time runners-up proved too much for the MI bowling unit to handle and Meg Lanning &amp; CO eventually ran away with two well-deserved points. With this winning start, Delhi has occupied the 2nd spot in the overall standings while the 2023 winners have dropped down to the 3rd place after failing to secure a win in their opening match.

The Delhi Capitals led by Meg Lanning emerged victorious in the 2nd match of WPL 2025 versus Haramanpreet Kaur's Mumbai Indians, winning by 2 wickets in a game filled with twists and turns. It was a nail-biting finish but in the end, a photo finish from Arundhati Reddy helped  DC get off to a winning start.

Ahead of IPL 2025, the Delhi Capitals took a big &amp; bold decision of moving away from Rishabh Pant and they released him from their squad ahead of the 2025 IPL Mega Auction. His departure from the team had left the captaincy post of the team vacant. Pant's services were secured by Sanjeev Goenka's Lucknow Super Giants in the Mega Auction for a record sum of 27 crore Indian Rupees. 
Ever since the departure of the 27-year-old Indian wicketkeeper batter to the Lucknow Super Giants, there have been several discussions about who will become the new skipper of the franchise ahead of IPL 2025. Now former Indian cricketer turned commentator Aakash Chopra has named three big contenders to take over the leadership duties of the team. 
All three players mentioned by the legendary commentator have the potential to guide DC to their first ever IPL Trophy winning campaign. It's worth noting that the franchise has not lifted the IPL trophy even once since the inception of the tournament. 
<h2>These three players are strong contenders of becoming the next captain of the Delhi Capitals</h2>
Former Indian Cricketer Aakash Chopra believes that the trio of KL Rahul, Axar Patel &amp; Faf Du Plessis have the highest chances of being named as the next skipper of the Delhi based team. He believes that given Axar's recent rise in stature in Indian Cricket, he can be considered as the front-runner in the race of becoming the new skipper. 
DC retained the services of the spin-bowling all rounder for a massive sum of 16.50 crore Indian Rupees ahead of the Mega Auction, which goes on to show the amount of trust &amp; faith the team management has in him. Then in the Mega Auction, they bought KL Rahul for a price tag of 14 crore Indian Rupees and South African legend Faf Du Plessis for 2 crore Indian Rupees in the auction held in Saudi Arabia's Jeddah.
<h2>This Indian player is considered as the front runner</h2>
47-year-old Aakash Chopra strongly believes that Axar Patel is considered as the front-runner to become the new leader of the franchise. He had a brilliant IPL 2024 season, where he dismissed 11 batters at a good economy rate of 7.65 and also scored a total of 235 runs in 12 innings at a strike rate of 131.28.

He further added, " He is also going to take part in the Champions Trophy 2025 and he has also been handed over a very important role in the ODI Team of India. He has matured as a Cricketer over the years, is in brilliant form, and understands the needs of the game very well. He always puts the team ahead of himself and therefore, he can be considered as the best option to lead the franchise ".
