The second match of the three-match ODI series between India and England was played on 9 February (Sunday) at Barabaati Stadium of Cuttack and in this game, the Indian Team secured an easy win by a margin of four wickets and took an unassailable lead of 2-0. The return of Rohit Sharma to his explosive form was a good news for the Indian fans but wicketkeeper batter KL Rahul delivered yet another disappointing performance with the bat in this match as well. He returned to dugout after scoring just 10 runs and even in the previous match of the series, the 31-year-old managed to score just two runs. 
In both games, the former LSG skipper had a chance to apply the finishing touches but, he returned to the pavilion and failed to help the Men in Blue get over the line. 
Even in last year's Sri Lanka tour, Rahul wasn't able to do anything special with the bat, managing to score just 31 runs in two innings. Rishabh Pant replaced him in the side in the 3rd ODI. If we take a close look at his stats, then we get to know that Rahul has amassed just 43 runs in the last four One-Day International games at a miserable average of 10.75, which goes on to reflect his struggles in the format. 
Rahul's glove work was also poor in the Cuttack ODI as his mistake led to Joe Root getting a lifeline. On his advice, skipper Rohit Sharma decided not to take the DRS review versus Root but the replays later showed that the ball was hitting the stumps.

However, one key talking point remains—India’s batting order. With KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya slotted at No. 6 and No. 7, respectively, the question arises: Is this the best use of their batting prowess, or is India leaving too much firepower unused until too late in the innings?  
<h2>KL Rahul at No. 6 – A Tactical Misstep?</h2>
KL Rahul is a class batter, someone who has excelled in various positions and formats. But seeing him come in at No. 6 feels like a waste of his abilities. A player of his caliber should ideally be batting higher, influencing the game rather than arriving too late to make a significant impact.

Gautam Gambhir has been particularly firm on this approach, at times seemingly prioritizing it over individual player roles. His push to include Yashasvi Jaiswal at all costs nearly led to Shreyas Iyer being dropped—despite Iyer being a proven performer in the middle order.  
This strategy also disrupted India’s well-set opening combination of Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, who have an outstanding ODI average of around 74. The proposed plan was to push Gill to No. 4 to accommodate Jaiswal at the top, with Virat Kohli at No. 3. However, breaking a successful opening pair could have hurt the team’s natural rhythm and stability.  
<h2>Axar Patel at No. 5 – A Bold Move, But At What Cost?</h2>
Perhaps the most surprising decision of all has been Axar Patel’s promotion to No. 5. To his credit, Axar has delivered some impactful performances in this position, proving his ability to contribute with the bat. He has played two crucial innings, providing stability and momentum when needed against England. However, while his performances have been commendable, the bigger question remains—does this move strengthen India’s overall batting structure?  
Axar at No. 5 means a player like KL Rahul, a specialist batter, gets pushed to No. 6, and Hardik Pandya, an elite batting all-rounder, finds himself at No. 7. This raises concerns about whether the team is utilizing its best batting resources in the most effective manner.  
<h2>Hardik Pandya – Wasted at No. 7</h2>
Hardik Pandya is not just a finisher—he is a game-changer. His best utilization comes when he bats at No. 5 or No. 6, where he can pace the innings, take calculated risks, and turn games in India’s favor. Slotting him at No. 7 restricts his ability to face enough deliveries and impact the game as he should. If India wants to maximize Pandya’s batting potential, he needs to be moved up the order.  
<h2>Is it Time to Play Rishabh Pant?</h2>
If India is determined to have a left-hander in the middle order, why not opt for Rishabh Pant? He is not only a natural left-hander but also a better wicketkeeper than KL Rahul. Slotting Pant at No. 5 would allow Hardik Pandya to bat at No. 6, followed by Axar and Ravindra Jadeja at No. 7 and No. 8. This would maintain the left-right balance without forcing top-quality right-hand batters too low in the order.  
India has been performing exceptionally well in the series, but the team management must ensure that its best players are being used to their full potential. KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya batting at No. 6 and No. 7 seems like an underutilization of their skill sets. While Axar Patel’s promotion has worked so far, the bigger picture—team combination and batting order balance—needs to be reconsidered.

Rohit Sharma, the Indian skipper, has finally broken his 16-innings drought in style! If there's one batter in modern cricket who can fearlessly step down against Mark Wood and launch him into the stands, it’s Rohit Sharma!
A big but impactful innings from Rohit Sharma was due and this innings featuring a HUNDRED from the dynamic skipper has stamped his true arrival.

Sharma got off the mark with a single on the third ball of the opening over. However, he didn’t take long to shift gears. In the second over, he unleashed his intent with a crisp boundary followed by a towering six, signaling his intent for a big innings. His momentum only grew stronger as he dispatched Saqib Mehmood for two massive sixes before play was briefly halted due to floodlight issues.
The short break did little to disrupt Sharma’s rhythm. As soon as play resumed, he launched a blistering six off Mark Wood’s 150 km/h thunderbolt. Racing to 43 off just 27 deliveries, he capitalized on Adil Rashid’s over, striking back-to-back fours to bring up his half-century in under 30 balls. His fifty, laced with four sixes and two fours, came at an impressive strike rate of 174.
This knock ended his ten-innings drought without a fifty, marking his third-fastest ODI half-century. But Sharma wasn’t done yet. With a blend of aggression and calculated stroke play, he looked determined to push even further.
He cautiously added the next 30 runs off 25 balls, adjusting his approach as the powerplay ended and two wickets tumbled at the other end. Maintaining his composure, he focused on strike rotation, building a steady partnership with Shreyas Iyer.
The white ball monster was in his true colors today and while playing a safe game in his 80s, he suddenly smoked a 145Kmph ball for a ride 80 meters away! His clear-cut mindset and determined intent were with his every stroke. After a long patience, he stepped up and smacked a six the Adil Rashid to reach his 100 in style.
He smashed three more boundaries in the next five balls he faced. He was at 119 when Liam Livingstone got the ball in his hands and in attempt to smack another six, he mishit a loopy and Adil Rashid didn't make any mistake to grab it. 
Before that, England won the toss and asked India to bowl first. Again, a good Partnership at the top helped England win the powerplay battle, with 75 runs in the first 10 overs without losing a wicket. Root and Duckett played in good rhythm, the middle order supported well and England finally breached the 300-run mark.

Rohit Sharma tried different things in the field, but England batters also made sure that they give their best. Although India's captain made good bowling changes, they were not able to pick wickets at regular intervals, which was cause of concern for the team. 
Rohit Sharma, with his field placements, also made sure that India doesn't leak runs. But fast bowler Harshit Rana made a big blunder, and off his bowling, he conceded four extra runs, which came in the form of an overthrow and didn't amaze the captain. 
On the 5th ball of the 32nd over, Harshit Rana bowled a delivery that Jos Buttler defended to the left of the bowler. The England skipper was out of his crease, but  Harshit Rana, in his followthrough, collected to the left and had a wild throw at the stumps. 
It was pretty needless as the ball went past the keeper, KL Rahul, to go for a boundary. This didn't make India captain Rohit Sharma happy as he was seen livid with the effort of Harshit Rana and was seen yelling at him: "Dimag hai ki nahi tere pass". 
Even Hardik Pandya wasn't happy with the way Harshit Rana made the overthrow. He, too, gestured to the fast bowler that it was a needless throw and was seen expressing his disappointment.

Coming to the match, England came up with a great effort with the bat after a poor outing in the first game. The visitors posted a total of 304 runs on the board. Joe Root (69) and Ben Duckett (65) slammed half-centuries that took a team to the big total.

India batter Shreyas Iyer is all set to be dropped for the second ODI against England to make way for Virat Kohli. As per the reports in PTI, it is learned that Yashasvi Jaiswal is all set to retain his place in the team for the second match. 
Virat Kohli, who missed the first game due to a knee injury, has regained his fitness and is all set to be back in the team. However, Shreyas Iyer might face the axe as he originally wasn't slated to play the first game as was revealed by him after the match. 
Shreyas Iyer played the first game as was informed by skipper Rohit Sharma on the eve of the match that he might play. However, the batter made sure that cashed on the opportunity as he played a powerful innings and slammed a brutal half-century that helped India win the first match of the three-match series. 
Shreyas Iyer played an innings of 59 runs as he counter-attacked the English bowlers when India lost two wickets early. He looked extremely solid with his shots and also played the short ball with absolute control and ensured that he bailed his team out of trouble.

However, despite playing well, he might be dropped. The report claimed that Shreyas Iyer was absent from India’s option nets session on Saturday, the eve of the second match. If he gets dropped then it will be a massive call from the management, especially with what he did in the last game of the series. 
On the other hand, it is learned that Yashasvi Jaiswal will be continuing as an opener in the second ODI against England. This is because team management wants to focus on the left-right combination, and hence, he will be opening, and Gill might be demoted to 4. 
The last two ODIs against England will give a clear picture of what India wants for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The tournament will be played right after the series, and it remains to be seen what combination India will opt for in the last two games.

Shubman Gill's chance to become the No.1 ODI batter became even greater after Babar Azam failed in the first game of the tri-series against New Zealand. The Pakistan batter, who opened the innings for the team, scored just 10 runs off 23 balls, which saw his rating take a hit. 
India captain Rohit Sharma also has a great chance to climb to the top of the ICC ODI rankings. The skipper is currently at No.2 in the ranks and needs to play a big knock in the second ODI against England. He failed in the first match, managing just 2 runs.

In what promises to be an entertaining and fabulous encounter, Rohit Sharma-led Team India will be seen clashing against Jos Buttler's England in the second One-Day International match of the three-match ODI Series at the Barabati Cricket Stadium of Cuttack. This exciting contest will commence from 1:30 PM IST (Indian Standard Time) onwards in the afternoon. 
In the first match of the series, Team India defeated the Englishmen by a margin of four wickets and this win allowed them to take a 1-0 lead in the series. Rohit Sharma is handling the leadership duties of the Men in Blue in the ODI Series whereas Jos Buttler is the commander of the Three Lions.

Star Indian batter Virat Kohli didn't get the chance to take part in the opening match of the series due to a swollen knee problem. But, his return to the side in the 2nd ODI is pretty much confirmed. The Indian team management would want him to get some runs under his belt as they would want Kohli to be at his best in the upcoming 2025 Champions Trophy.

The 25-year-old has scored 315 runs in the last six matches at an impressive strike rate of 176.96 and an average of 35. Also he's on the verge of breaking a massive ODI record of Hashim Amla and he will surely be one player to watch out for. 
Rohit Sharma: India's skipper Rohit Sharma has been struggling to find form with the bat as his batting woes have been going on since the Test-Series versus New Zealand. He hasn't played a single good knock in any format since November of last year and he needs to find his form quickly as Team India need him to be at his best ahead of the all-important Champions Trophy 2025.
He has scored 230 runs in the last 9 matches with a strike rate of 169.11. Rohit Sharma's explosive start helps the team to score big and one single good inning will help him to rediscover his lost mojo. 
Jos Buttler: Jos Buttler, the white-ball captain of England didn't have a good T20i series with the bat versus India but he started off the ODI series on a positive note, scoring a good half century in Nagpur. He will play a key role in the middle order of the Three Lions and he will be hoping to fire with the bat yet again in the Cuttack ODI. 
He has scored 214 runs in 8 matches at an average of 42.8 and a strike rate of 158.51. Jos Buttler's combination of calm and aggressive batting provides stability to England's middle order and if he manages to find some consistency with the bat, then India could be in big trouble. 
Phil Salt: Explosive wicketkeeper batsman Phil Salt is looking in his explosive form with the bat at present. He didn't perform well with the bat in the first four T20i matches versus India but in the Wankhede T20i game, he scored a brilliant fifty. He has successfully transferred that momentum into the 50 over format as well as in the Nagpur ODI, he helped his team get off to a fiery start, playing a good inning of 42 runs but a miscommunication with his partner Duckett meant he got run out. 
The 28-year-old is an intelligent batter and he knows how to dominate the bowlers from the word go. He has managed to score 272 runs in his last 8 ODI outings with an average of 34 and a strike rate of 99.63 with his aggressive style. Philip Salt can do something different with his bat even in today's match.
